Riding Santa Cruz in a rain storm | California

Спорт

Went to ride Santa Cruz, California for the first time during a rain storm! This was not ideal but it sure did make for an epic time. I was so nervous about getting back into the van but we managed to clean up and NOTHING got dirty!!! I cannot wait to get back and ride this place some more. It had some pretty steep fast sections and super flowy trails everywhere.
Thank you for watching and stay tuned for more adventures to come. Comment below and tell me where I should go next to ride......

Agreed to not riding SC trails in the rain as a rule, but also agree some trails are also better wet/a little rainy - in CO some of the kitty litter soil trails are really only pleasant to ride when they’re wet, haha

I assume you didn't consider it, but riding trails when they're muddy create more work for the volunteers who are trying to maintain the trails. It's a serious pain in the ass to fix problems in trails caused by riders who are either ignorant of what their impact to muddy trails are or are extremely disrespectful to trail builders and ride anyway. Food for thought as an MTB influencer.

@@BertrandHui yea, no shit, my brother lived 2 miles from Post, I know it well and know full well not to ride there after it rains and tell anyone I know to check with Dirty Fingers if they want good intel and a beer. Post is what I would call on the "east side" of the mtns where it's drier and the soil different from the west side. Much like WA, once on the eastside of the Cascades you can't ride in the wet. Sorry I made the comment. From what I saw in the video with the tree types and loam it appeared to be a well draining area that wouldn't leave hard tracks in sandy soil. But there are MANY places like, all the trails around Seattle, where we can ride year round with no damage, but we've also learned, like the Northshore, how to build trails to handle water, but sometimes the that doesn't matter if the soil is wrong.

Some serious GoPro effect here - I could tell those trails were a lot steeper than it looks on video. When I was dreaming up my first van layout years ago, my dream was to have the garage in the back that opened directly into a shower. Bring the bike in, shut the van door, get out of muddy riding gear, into the shower, then through a second door into the van to get into clean clothes. Unfortunately, that layout requires a fair amount of length few vans have.

The soil in socal is vastly composed of DG (decomposed granite) and water runs through it like sand so it is glorious when wet. In areas where the soil is composed mostly of clay the soil becomes sticky and soupy and riding it when it is like that destroys the trails and leaves ruts and bomb holes from breaking. When to ride in the rain really boils down to the stick factor. If the mud is sticking to everything and caking up like butter cream frosting it is a no go. If it isn't then go for it.
