Ricoh’s latest GR III has one crucial, dreamy, change
Ғылым және технология
This is the new $1,067 Ricoh GR III HDF. It’s a pocket-sized point and shoot camera with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor and a fixed super sharp 28mm f/2.8 lens. It is almost an exact copy of the GR III that came out in March of 2019. But what makes it worth talking about today is the new “HDF” part of its name. It stands for high diffusion filter. Where previous Ricoh cameras had a built in ND filter, which you can think of as sunglasses for your camera that minimize the amount of light hitting the sensor, the GR III HDF has a highlight diffusion filter instead. #Camera #Photography #Technology

Do you think of Ricoh as a printer company or a camera company?
@svcross-do

A printer company, look from where its revenue comes from.

Cameras, but that's because I worked in a camera store in the 80s that sold Ricoh cameras. Xerox was the "Kleenex" of copier companies at the time in North America. So do folks think of Konica Minolta as a copier company, a... well... two Camera companies (plus film for Konica), or a leading manufacturer of planetariums? Wait, what?!?

Becca explains everything so well!!
I am constantly wanting more Full Frame videos, they're always an absolute treat and Becca is just so enthusiastic and knowledgeable!
something about your video reviews are so honest and grounded. I really love the way you review camera products. Huge fan of Becca!
This is the first Full Frame video I've seen and one of the first The Verge videos I've even taken note of watching. That being said, this was a really great, thoughtful, and informative videos I've seen on a camera in while. Great job, Becca.
thank you for this honest perspective Becca. imo content like this helps keep people's gear acquisition syndrome in check and challenges companies to really strive for more. it's never been a better time to get into photography and you're a big part of why!
small correction! Ricoh no longer owns the stadium 😬
@AnonymousFreakYT
17 күн бұрын
They never even owned the stadium. They just had a standard "stadium naming agreement" like nearly every other stadium out there where they paid money to have their name on the stadium as advertising.
It's nice to see how much fun you have with the camera and photography. Thanks for the video. :D
Becca never misses, the quality of Full Frame is always there. I can't wait for the next one, but in the meantime I'd check out previous editions just to remind myself that this series has never missed once.
10/10 camera nerd content. Ricoh GRiiix Urban Edition has been the best camera I’ve ever carried because I carry it everywhere! It’s also properly priced and stocked. It’s such an amazing time to be a fan of this camera system because it’s lesser known and lesser wanted than the Fuji x100v/vi which are pricy and sold out constantly. Please spread the good word, but only to the best people! Let’s keep Ricoh community strong and niche!
I owned a Ricoh GR3X but sold it when I bought my X-T5 (I have a Fujifilm X100v) and I thought that version was expensive… Ricoh needs to concentrate on the next iteration of the GR range, the GR4 and not doing the lazy thing they are doing now such as this camera variant. A GR4 which is weather sealed, that has a much much faster autofocus and more accurate too, and make it start up quicker too. 🏴
I love these Full Frame videos! So well researched and edited! I've had my Ricoh GRIIIx for about 2 years now, and it's pretty much replaced my old DSLR. I'm sad we STILL don't have a four, but that being said, I'm not sure what else I would want, other than an improved battery and better backscreen. What I like best about it, is it's compact, "stelth" look, that makes you invisible, versus getting something like the fujifilm x100 cameras

the one thing still missing is weather sealing
I know nothing about cameras, but this video was so good that I watched the whole thing anyways. Also, that "spot the difference" bit was awesome
Neat camera, and the HDF sounds like fun. Becca - thanks for the knowledge and good energy you share in all your videos!
You do a great job. Informative, analogies, and likable personality. Thanks!
Becca Appreciate this and definitely enjoyed. You are correct but also with many others where great in one area and missing the mark on another.I look forward to seeing more on this. I also didn't know that there were this many. Thanks for sharing Enjoyed. 💯✌️
Spot on with the takes here, got my GR IIIx HDF day one and loving it to bits. Definitely now also going to be in line for the GR IV whenever that happens 😂
I love full frame so much. Thanks for the excellent video
love the video as always! praying we'll get a GR IV
Thank you for these videos Becca, I learned about Diffusion filters and what this version of the GRIII does. Keep these videos coming! I don't know if you've reviewed the Fuji T-X30 II but that'd be an interesting review.
New Becca video? My day is improved. As usual I learned a ton, thank you!
Becca's videos are becoming better and better as days go by. Amazing stuff!
Nice review! I feel like the HDF is better suited to locations with more overcast weather like the NYC, London, or Seattle. As someone based in SoCal, the ND filter version is much more useful for me.
This was an excellent video in every way!
the editing of the video is creamy - great work
Great review, fantastically creative camera that outputs genuinely beautiful images,. Not sure I want it to change much, it just works.
That intro was so smooth and perfect!
Duuuuuude. I want. Great work once again Becca!
Amazing job! Loved the review and the storytelling of the company
I've got the GR1s film camera, released in 1997, and it looks exactly like the GR III. Ricoh's camera department is like a dad, pick a style and roll with it forever :)
Old enough to remember the Olympus Trip, a 35mm film camera in this 'consumer' category. Ricoh had a similar model and it was perfect for non-nerds. Almost 50 years ago. Like many Japanese companies, Ricoh has a huge product catalog. Leica meanwhile... Oh and the ND filter is useful for flash sync at shutter speeds lower than 1/250s in bright daylight. These glow/diffusion filters are like an Instagram trick. polar Pro makes them. Philip Bloom sells them!
Just a side note, as you talked about the tiffen filters, now I think this would be a great add for a iPhone video setup, because one of the worst parts of shooting with iphone is the lens flare and direct light capture!
You are so good on camera. Absolute natural.
I enjoy these kind of videos a lot. Thanks for sharing. This camera is/was on my bucket list, but I got something different and much older that does not justify to buy the Ricoh for now.
I still have a Fuji X10 I bought in 2012 and am finally trying to make an effort to practice photography with it. What do you think though, stick with X10 or go Ricoh? I just wish they’d make an X40 haha
becca, can you shoot this camera in maual mode? like can you maually adjust the focus and things like that
That spot the difference bit was awesome
The production quality here is just unnecessarily high and i'm all about it. 'spot the difference' amazing.
Great vid! Ricoh also now owns PFU, makers of the Happy Hacking Keyboard line of keyboards among other things
A great pocket camera. Very discreet. Just got myself the gr IIIx non HDF version. I love it. ND filter is useful for me. That's what made me pick it instead of the HDF version.
Great video. I remember being at cp+ the year the iii was announced, even got slme heads on but didn't "get" it cause i was too focused on interchangeable lens cameras. Wish i could go back in time! 😂
you should start your own camera channel
Fantastic video by Becca yet again
Nice break down I picked up the diary edition a little over a year ago, partly due to Samuel Street life and partly cause I just wanted something pocketable. Now I actually shoot it more than my Fuji or my Nikon, it's so compact yet capable.
Great explainer!
I love my ricoh gr3x! we need more ricoh and pentax cameras!
Checkout the ricoh gxr. Its a really underrated interesting modular camera which have been discontinued by ricoh
to me, any diffusion filter like the one your demonstrated and the HDF in this new Ricoh, is great when your looking at something hit by the sun but almost never pointed towards the sun/light source -- where the subject is backlit.
I find it interesting that Ricoh hadn't done this (have so many small changes to the same camera) in any previous generations of the GR line. One of if not the sharpest lenses on any compact camera. I love them.

You mean digital GRs, right? They did variations of the GR1 film cameras (GR1, 1s, 1v, 21).

more Becca please…love your vids bud
i just got the Ricoh HDF and love it. Sold my Sony A6000. Have used the HDF filter some and would not like to be withouth it. Even if it’s situational. I shoot mostly in jpeg and HDF with recepies is awsome.
Becca killing it and production A++++++
I love my GR's! I edit all my raws on a z fold and its awesome on the go.
Awesome video
The Ricoh line is for enthusiasts who know what they want out of a camera and less gimmicks. Tho that filter is heavenly.
I've been carrying my GR III in my pocket for years. I can't wait for a GR IV, but I've heard nothing about one even being in development. If my current GR III breaks before it comes out, I'll likely try out one of these GR III HDFs.
cool review
for static subjects they could add a mode where the camera fires 2 shots for Filter effect control > a shot WITH the filter and another without and lets user decide the % of the effect
@costagf

this because it feels to heavy handed for general use ...or they could just finally launch the GRIVx. ... (40-50mm 🙏and tilt screen)
Becca is a breath of fresh air in a stale room.
Becca nerding out about Pentax 🎉
I use the nd a filter a lot to capture motion blur in my street shots with the Ricoh's. In fact, I wished they'd had a variable nd up to 5 stops! I hope the company doesn't replace nd with hdf in their next flagship. If they're able to figure out how to incorporate both the nd and hdf filters, even better!
Lovely video. Why does it feel like we might get a special edition GR IV before releasing an actual GR IV...
Ah, I thought they made something with custom LUT system or something (dunno, crate your preset in C1 or LR and camera can read it and edit all photos with it) , but really?, just filter that I can screw on or off my camera, or stack them onto each other (x70 owner). Thanks for explanation of recopy approach - helps a lot to make it less ridiculous.
I have been waiting for years for them to launch the Ricoh full frame. I want a camera like this for street photography and to print and sell those photos.
Is it equivalent to 1/4 or 1/8 black mist? 🤔
I can't wait until Ricoh-Pentax releases their new film camera.
Would have like to see a more rugged body as an upgrade. Biggest weakness of this camera is my fear of dropping it.
judging by all the backorders, seems like they DONT actually make any cameras

I have a GRiii and it's falling apart - I've lost the ring from the front, have broken the front bit that pushes out when you turn it on. It's scratched, there's dust on the sensor and, well, it works but only just. I also tried the GRiii x, but sent it back after a few days -- and have questioned that decision ever since. This HDF thing doesn't appeal to me at all - it just feels too gimmicky, and I want a proper update, not another copy. I guess I'll just wait and see if I have any money when (and if) they release a GRiv.
is it a digital filter or physical filter?
They need to put a viewfinder on it like the film models and add a small joy stick
I think the HDF is pretty cool, but I know when they started teasing an announcement most of us who were following were really hoping for a GR IV...
You seem connected. Can’t you look into the new analog Ricoh/Pentax camera development? Please!
I would think X100VI costing a boatload and seemingly never in stock makes the the Ricoh a great cheaper alternative. Added diffusion filter is a good move since putting a filter on these badboys is a hassle and ruins the layout of the whole camera. Also because the influencers are crazy about that look.
the lens on the Ricoh GR III is an 18.3mm not 28mm. you can always say 28mm full-frame equivalent though but still.
If it's a Becca video I'm watching it, every time bud
I’m convinced 😅
I did not realized that the ND filter was removed.. I personally prefer the ND filter.
Very nice.
For the love of $deity give us more Becca! Seriously though, you guys have engaging and talented journalists and a channel with over 3 million subs, but you use it almost exclusively for quite dull audio-only podcast hosting. I wish there were more proper videos.
Nice but the ND is more practical for most of us. Especially when shooting F2.8 in daylight
Ricoh GR IIIx come at September 2021. Still no GR IV.
My GR is always with me… it’s the best
I hope Ricoh 4 comes out soon

I think the thumbnail is not very clickable.. like it calls out to not click. So guys, change it to something better.. cuz I don't like seeing Verge high quality vids with low views..
so many commenting here about full frame, but this is APS-C
Wow, and I thought Nikon was ridiculous for releasing 3 versions of the Z50..
Awesome :)
Good luck getting one. They've been on backorder ever since orders opened up - and now it's a lottery system.
Toronto Canada maybe?
Glad I got just the standard GRIIIx. That effect can be terrible looking at times from all the images I’ve seen on Reddit.

I’ve the GR II… and the fact that they removed the flash in the GRIII and next is big FNO for me on upgrading. Sorry not sorry
Obsessed with the camera and its beautiful lens and files. But they break way way too easy Ricoh!!
As a former watch company as well they're clearly inspired by endless limited editions😂
okay ... now i wanna buy one :-(
The multiple interactions or collectors versions seems to be a Japanese thing seen in other products from video games to food treats
BUY A NEW SHARPIE !!!
ricoh gr is becoming the hario v60 of cameras
I don't think the "edition" cameras count as real "models" I think that there are 4 cameras now: GR III, IIIx and the respective HDF variants.
