    Self-irony is a big thing, but yeah the Late Night With Conan O'Brien was basically the first and cheapest show. We had Oprah, but Dr. Phil was actually more popular here. I don't know, self-irony and helping individuals is more of our thing. Us Finns are most helpful people there are. As a nerd I like to help some newbies"noobs" or new players to get them started, it doesn't take any of my time and they basically just stand there in games. I don't speak for all, but I like to help people. If I have an opportunity to help someone I usually take it. I have to say I hate the mass immigration though, that doesn't remove the problems it just moves them.

    I'm from Denmark and this was beyond hysterically funny, the fact aside that vikings didn't wear horned helmets (that myth comes from a Wagner opera as far as I'm informed). But the whole raping hats bit made me cry with laughter. "Why are you taking your raping hat? - No reason...."

    +Dennis Stuhr I thought it was a much older myth than that. I can't remember what source I got it from but I was lead to believe it was invented by western europeans at the time because they wanted people to associate vikings with demons.

    I can't refer to any sources, so I will be just as good as the rest of them, but in my opinion as a Norwegian there are two main reasons. Geographically they are (for the most part except far north) separated from the rest by a large ocean. Their language does not originate from the same origin meaning the people originates from different places. In the northern parts of sweeden, Norway and Finland the bloodlines are more intertwined and the languages spoken by the native people more similar (sami) Denmark is also separated, but trade has always been better because they were more connected with the continent, thus they could provide better goods. Norway has always been the poorest of the Scandinavian countries until post ww2 erea.

    true. quite accurate, although "scandinavia" is not defined by geography, but by the three countries of norway, denmark and sweden, (exactly because of what you so beautifully wrote) which is why finland has not been scandinavian since the creation of the grand duchy of finland under russia. let me just quote wikipedia here, for any who will seek to claim otherwise "Skandinavia er tradisjonelt et begrep for den geografiske regionen som utgjøres av de tre monarkiene Danmark, Norge og Sverige."

    +Eivind Nordengen Why are people so Asberger about that silly definition? What about the 700 years Finland was part of Sweden, just like Norrland, was it part of Scandinavia then? We still regard Stockholm as Scandinavian, don't we, despite not being a part of Skanderna (the mountain ranges). And what about Denmark, it also has nothing to do with Skanderna and is not even considered "Scandinavia" in countries like Germany and Holland.

  • @stiras1

    @stiras1

    Sven Ekeberg Using someone's disorder to "insult" people is not cool. It's really low and immature. Also Finland has not been part of Sweden for over 200 years. This is 2016. And my German and Dutch friends know what Scandinavia is, and if they didn't... who cares what people in Germany and Holland think? They're not Scandinavians.

  • @herrfriberger5

    @herrfriberger5

    8 жыл бұрын

    stiras1 It's you calling it a "disorder", I used it to describe a basic personality trait. The fact that it is 2016 or that 200 years has passed is rather irrelevant, at least if you understood my point. Large areas of what you call Scandinavia (such as Stockholm or Köpenhamn) has about as little, or as much, to do with the origin of the name as Finland has. The distinction is synthetic. In England and UK, Island/Iceland is often considered Scandinavian, due to it's Norwegian background and cultural ties. Denmark is usually included, but not always (although more often than in Germany). Many cultural concepts are floating or changing in usage. (Yes, Scandinavia is as much about culture as it is about geography.) You and I argue about this, other people argue over whether some part of Turkey or Russina should be considered European or Asian, or both, and so on. My point is that there is no definitive answers. Those militant attempts of exact _borderline_ definitions are seldom natural, but political, often in an attempt to make people forget about their actual history. Some Germans, Dutch or English people may not have gone through the same brainwash as you, so why be so arrogant about what they say?

  • @stiras1

    @stiras1

    8 жыл бұрын

    Sven Ekeberg It is a disorder not a personality trait, and using it in such a context implies that it's bad which is an insult to people who actually do have Asperger. I have not been brainwashed, I just know what countries are in Scandinavia. People who think Finland is part of it are not brainwashed just ignorant or too stubborn to accept things as they are. You can argue all you want about how Finland "should" be seen as part as Scandinavia, but it doesn't change the fact that it's not.

There is language, customs, institutions, the state (its composition and structure), etc. - all things that supersede ethnicity, and all things that are inherited by it's parent state (which, in Greenland's case, is of course the Scandinavian country of Denmark). Think of it like England in the 11th Century - inhabited overwhelmingly by Anglo-Saxons (with a few Norse and Celtics, too), yet it was a Norman country, run by Normans with Norman institutions and a Norman state.

    +Odin the Wanderer You're all wrong. A viking is a type of fairy in Irish folklore. It is usually depicted as a little bearded man, wearing a coat and hat, who partakes in mischief. They are solitary creatures who spend their time making and mending shoes and have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

But considering how the rest of the world raped the shit out of women cause they thought we were less than nothing, Id say viking women had it pretty good. They could also vote, divorce their husbands (which was very shameful for the men if their wives left them) and they could own land! :) Also most things we know about Vikings came from Christians and we all know how they bullshit. Kill or convert, that was their motto.

    Actually as a Scandinavian it is a bit tiring how British people always have to make fun of the raping and pillaging. It is like every time you meet a brit they are going to crack some joke about that. I guess it is like Germans might get tired of all the Nazi jokes after a while. It isn't to be party pooper, but it is slightly annoying when you know Viking culture was so much more. Vikings were big on trade and exploration. Vikings had well developed legal system, a lot of gender equality, pretty progressive laws regarding crime and punishment. And for being such a poor and small society the Vikings had an amazingly well developed literary tradition. I'll give kudos to the Irish though. They often seem amazingly well informed on Vikings though and don't have quite the British cartoon view of Vikings.

    Actually it's a rather common misconception that the vikings wore horned helmets. They also didn't pillage that much, other than the occasional war and such when expanding. They were actually pretty good traders that traveled the waters all the way down to the Mediterranean sea and adjacent countries.

    Did they pillage? Yes. But in actuality an English knight was probably more likely to be a rapist than a Viking. There are many accounts of knights kidnapping a woman and “forcing a marriage”. On the Viking side we have several accounts from English monks complaining about how the Scandinavian men constantly groomed themselves and how they seduced English women. The whole Vikings being particularly rapey thing was likely either medieval propaganda, or made up by Victorians (like the horned helmets and a whole lot of other stuff)

    Thanks, i'm a 13 year old girl from norway, and i (almost) speak and write "floating" english. We had a giant english test, thats kind of like an exsam but not that hard. And guess what! I got a 5 or a "B" on it!

    Well.. there is a reason why the Scandinavian people are so beautiful. The vikings took all the beautiful women with them home and left the ones who weren't pretty enough.
