Rick Strassman, M.D. - “Old Testament Prophecy - A Western Model of the Psychedelic Experience”

Rick Strassman, M.D.
“Old Testament Prophecy - A Western Model of the Psychedelic Experience”
Our clinical research with the naturally-occurring human psychedelic, DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) sought to understand the relationship between the psychopharmacology of DMT and spiritual experience. Eastern religious systems, particularly Buddhist, provided the spiritual model which I, and previous investigators, believed would be most relevant to our research. However, unitive experiences of ego dissolution typical of enlightenment experiences were quite rare. Rather, volunteers actively related to what appeared to be autonomous, external alternative realties, while firmly maintaining a sense of personal identity. Old Testament descriptions of prophetic experience are replete with psychedelic content, and comport more closely with the DMT volunteers’ reports than a Buddhist model of enlightenment. This finding provides support for utilizing Old Testament prophetic literature as an alternative, Western model by which to understand and integrate contemporary psychedelic experience. It also suggests a means by which students of the Old Testament may access the state of consciousness out of which emerged prophetic Old Testament text.
Biography
Rick Strassman MD received his undergraduate training at Pomona College and Stanford University. He obtained his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, general psychiatry training at UC Davis in Sacramento, and a clinical psychopharmacology fellowship at UC San Diego. Joining the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 1984, he led a research project that established the first known function of the pineal hormone melatonin in humans. In 1990, Dr. Strassman began the first new human psychedelic drug research in a generation, studying the effects of DMT, or N,N-dimethyltryptamine. After finishing this project in 1995, he left UNM and has worked in various clinical practice settings. He has written DMT - The Spirit Molecule, and co-authored Inner Paths to Outer Space. He is currently president and co-founder of the Cottonwood Research Foundation, and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UNM.

Absolutely revolutionary work here, doc! His work shows the deep truth and philosophic-scientific usefulness of our own tradition (speaking as a westerner). DMT provides a good model or first approximation for how prophetic experience can he grounded, as dopamine does for the orientation toward meaning.

Well, he was brave enough to soldier on and I admire him for that. I have to say though, if Dr. Strassman was more familiar with the content of the "Law" in the Bible, he would not describe it as the *ethical* application of a shamanic vision. All iron-age laws from the ancient Near East were underpinned by power politics and the same is true of the law of Moses.

I read the DMT book when it came out 20 odd years ago, and while it was interesting, and important research, as a long time student myself of religion, I came away thinking that there was very little actual spiritual edifying experience therein, but lots of bizarre and almost psychotic experience. It helps to remember that the great teachers, like Jesus, Ramana Maharshi, Meher Baba, St Teresa, Suzuki roshi, were not psychedelic users. Psychedelics seem to me to usurp faith, rather than reinforce it. Anyway, I appreciate Dr Strassman powering through a speech impediment that many of us have, in order to publicize this important information.

You don’t think there’s an edifying spiritual experience within psychedelics? I think you would benefit from a high dose psychedelic experience (like Terence McKenna’s recommended 5 dried grams of psilocybin in silent darkness). If there really isn’t a spiritually edifying experience there you will know for yourself and can do research beforehand to understand that it is safe. If it IS a spiritually edifying experience you can experience it for yourself and join in with the rest of the people who are beginning to connect the dots between psychedelic experiences and what is in the Bible. I think it would really benefit our society for people like you to have an experience like that because I’m sure people respect you and your opinions. It’s much better to say “Ive done this myself and I know it’s not a spiritually edifying experience” rather than saying “I’ve never done it but I’m pretty sure it’s not spiritually edifying.” Especially if it actually IS spiritually edifying and would be a life altering experience for someone you know. Also I’m not here saying I have a full background of your psychedelic experiences, but I can gather from your comment that if you have had experiences with psychedelic substances it would have been dabbling here or there, not actually doing what I have said, which would be the Terence McKenna method of 5 dried grams of psilocybin in silent darkness. Do that and decide at that point whether it’s spiritually edifying or not. *disclaimer: I say this as a long time Christian who has done the things I’ve recommended you do and have personally come away with the conclusion that these experiences ARE spiritually edifying, and that they are extremely relevant to our study of the Bible. Also, I don’t have specific references about whether or not Jesus did psychedelics, but I want you to know the recipe for Kaneh Bosm in the Old Testament would have contained around 9lbs of cannabis and the proper oils to make it fat soluble (able to be absorbed through the skin, which would have made it psycho-active like an edible) and the High Priests would pour this oil over their heads in the Tabernacle. (Exodus 30:22-23) I’m not coming down on you, I’m coming to you because I think the religious or spiritual leaders of today need to be more properly informed about these topics because it is an extremely unknown area where people are consistently having spiritual experiences. I think that’s a topic religious and spiritual leaders should talk about. Especially when these substances are having such a positive affect on things like suicide, depression, ptsd, and addiction.

The idea that there is no individual self in Eastern mysticism is a misconception. All is One, yes, but the One manifests itself in each individual being or soul. I love Strassman's work, but this lecture is entirely based on an assumption that one spiritual system (judeo christian) is more relevant because of its seeming similarity with user reports, when in fact true Eastern mysticism says the same thing at its core

_This medium is elastic, so attenuated as to elude our physical senses, or even the spectroscope which recognizes the most infinitesimal gaseous atoms. It performs for the universal worlds in space what our nervous system does for its grosser body. It transmits the impressions of solar light, heat, magnetism, electricity, and atinic force. All-pervading, it is the nerve organism, the esse of things, the material out of which is developed our spiritual bodies._ _Rev. Charles Beecher, as if to undermine the basis of Spiritualism, but thus virtually acknowledging it, says of this ethereal medium: "It was the Φύϭιϛ of Hippocrates, Aristotle, and Galen; the anima (as opposed to animus) of the Romans; and the Sephiroth of the Jewish Cabala. From this ' soul of the world' of the pre-Platonic Orientals, all souls are emanations._ _The ' demons ' of the Greeks, from Plato down to Jamblichus, were nothing but this. By this the magicians of the Nile, and the jugglers of the Ganges, wrought their wonders. This was the true Python, source of all divination, magic, and witchcraft, in annals sacred and profane. This is the true secret of the Protean wonders of Rhabdomancy, clairvoyance, and animal magnetism. '_ _"The occult science," says Father Rebold, "designated by the ancient priests under the name of regenerating fire, is that which at the present day is known as animal magnetism - a science that, for more than three thousand years, was the peculiar possession of the Indian and Egyptian priesthood, into the knowledge of which Moses was initiated at Heliopolis, when he was educated; and Jesus, among the Essenian priests of Egypt or Judea; and by which these two great reformers, particularly the latter, wrought many of the miracles mentioned in Scriptures."_ _Baron Reichenbach, detecting these elemental spheres around objects, which he termed "odylic," made many interesting experiments, indicating by what subtle influences we are all moved. Thus, seizing upon the very soul of this spiritual atmosphere, he was able to trace the photographing of mineral and metallic substances upon each other, of animals on animals, of man on man. He found that stars and clusters of stars have a magnetic influence peculiar to their aura._ THE GADARENE: OR, SPIRITS IN PRISON J. O. Barrett and J. M. Peebles.1874

After some discomfort I chose to lay in my bed. I began hearing growls, as if they were coming from just inside of my ears. I chose to practice some breathing exercises in an attempt to calm myself. Seven seconds in then rest for two seconds, seven seconds out then rest for two seconds, repeat. In blackness I began to see an emanation from the center of my head, like watching the radar screen in a submarine, except the light that was emanating felt and appeared as if what was moving though every cell, every atom of my brain and it felt like kindness, love, learning, and communication. I then observed as if I was a tear or a raindrop; I dripped and fell from a stained glass window with a marijuana leaf motif, I proceeded to drip down the surface of what reveled itself to be the horn of an infinite demon of fractal like geometry that stretched to my visual horizons. In a state of fear I cried out "I don't care if this L.S.D. is charmed by the devil himself, I accept Jesus Christ as my lord and savior", then a vision of my heart appeared with a sword in the foreground followed by the roar of a lion, then I snapped out of the vision. I was forced to go to church three or four times as a child, did and do not really identify as a practitioner of any religious tradition and have identified as atheist and agnostic in the past. This experience has led to multiple experiences of synchronicity that helped me synthesize rationalism, empiricism, and intuition as each being valid methods of attaining knowledge in my own life. The synchronicity that I experienced continues to shake me up when I think about it. I am most interested in the branch of knowledge that includes logic, economics and ethics. These use deductive methods from a priori Truths to derive causal knowledge for our use in our personal experiences.I learned this from my mentor Professor Hans Hoppe who describes these methodologies as having there footing in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, who proposed that there were different categories of knowledge attained by different means. The philosophy of Kant should have been the moment that logical positivist or empiricist and rationalist made a truce, for the scientific method itself relied on the confirmation/denial of hypothesis as a logical precondition to utilizing the method itself to reach knowledge about how things are in reality to the best of knowledge now; however, the empiricist and the scientific method of inquiry reigns supreme as a despot over what is knowledge and how it is attained. Rationalist and empiricist view intuition and the metaphysics of spiritualism with disdain. Back to the synchronicity; I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up two books, one was a book title "Jung the Mystic" by Gary Lackman, I picked this book up because I had a new found interest in what mysticism actually was. I also picked up "The Philosophy Book-Big Ideas Simply Explained". In the the philosophy book, as I read through and saw the debate over the centuries develop between rationalist, empiricist and spiritualist, I then came across Immanuel Kant, but it was not the explanation of Kant's philosophy that caught my attention, but a one inch by one inch illustration of herdsman knelling on the grass lifting the horizon of the empirical world we observe so frequently to peer into another structure of reality that contained our waking observable reality, this illustration is known as the Flammarion Woodcut. In the background of the reality revealed to the shepherd are wheels within wheels, I come to find out that this is a representation of the Merkabah, translated as chariot. The Merkavah is a Jewish mystical tradition that teaches how to come to know God by ascending or descending to the heavenly realms. This idea of a decent to heaven is interesting considering the nature of psychedelic vision existing within us.

Just like you have already verified that the different ways of ingesting. Has different time durations of the effects. and even if you want to get down to the spirit part included you could even add. What if I extract it. With let's say five different texts that are out there to use to make DMT. I think that we could bounce around and separate a little more detail in there. And strengthen our claims a little bit don't you believe so Rick? I mean do you see what I'm kind of getting at. I mean right now I got four different colors . And I used four different text to make the stuff. And yeah I can tell the difference in it. I couldn't imagine banging the s*** though..... But then again maybe I can I don't know let's talk..

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come into the light, for fear that their evil deeds will be exposed. But he who does the truth comes into the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done through God.” John 3: 16-21

I have tremendous appreciation for eastern philosophy and spiritual systems but this lecture is extremely focused. Finding likeness with eastern spiritual philosophy is hardly surprising considering Dr Strassman's background and assuming most religious foundations find their basis in ancient pagan shamanic practices including the use of psychoactive/psychedelic substances. Yet as far as I know, Soma is the only specific mention of anything regarding a visionary substance in eastern texts. Did you even listen to this???
