The Psychology of Psychedelics | Roland Griffiths | EP 167

Dr. Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., is a professor of neuroscience, psychiatry, and behavioral science and director of the Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is the author of over 400 scientific research publications and has trained more than 50 postdoctoral research fellows. He has been a consultant to the National Institutes of Health and numerous pharmaceutical companies in the development of new psychotropic drugs.
Dr. Roland Griffiths and I discuss the research with John Hopkins University. We spoke about how he got into psychedelics and convinced ethic committees to approve such research, why he chose the scientific path, specifics about his studies with psilocybin, transformations of cancer patients with family members, the impact of psilocybin in existing institutions, the ongoing studies he is performing with long-time meditators and religious leaders, how the integration of psilocybin into society may look and more.

This is what I was interested in hearing. I’m curious about the group of people who were chosen and there past experiences. If 30% of them felt fear, did this correlate with past or present trauma? He said they have yet to experiment with Bipolar diagnosed but it would be interesting to see if we are holding a remedy for peace. This most certainly could be life changing.

I MET DR. GRIFFITHS TODAY! I ran into him on a hike !!!! Absolutely genuine and kind!! Still can’t believe it. The odds!!! We were in the middle of nowhere!!! I said “Sir, are you Roland Griffiths?” He said “yes” with the most vibrant and comfortable smile I’ve ever seen. I said “Doctor Griffiths, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your research and sacrifice in your studies.” He smiled from ear to ear and responded warmly (not verbatim) “Your welcome my friend. You are projecting on to me, what you have found inside you. And I encourage that you manifest all of the joy you have found in these breakthroughs and pass it on;)” Life. Changing. He doesn’t know, and probably never will, but he just redirected my entire life. I am not going to let this interaction, stay as just an interaction, it is time to manifest my life. Whether this leads to me reading a book, or writing one, I’m here to say that the opportunity to speak to this man, even for a minute, is among my top 5 most memorable life experiences😁😁

I am not sure of the malevolent concern here in regards to interdependence and evolution. Unless he is concerned that these mushrooms were put on earth by aliens or something. Many plants can only propagate if their seeds are ingested and then pooped out by an animal for example,. That's not nefarious - just co-evolution and mutual benefit.

I have conducted about 25 psilocybin sessions on myself, with doses raging from 0.18g up to 3.8g a session, different strains of shrooms, different strengths. All during last 3 years. Inner child traumas, ancestors traumas, self love, full self acceptance, learning how to love my dark side, overcoming fears, rejections, childhood traumas, letting go, forgiveness were just a few things that came out of it. I was shown every single bit of bad energy that I have ever contributed to collective consciousness, all bed things that ever been done to me, but also all bad things that I have ever done to others, I have overcame self hate, suicide of my younger sister, divorce, depression, being suicidal myself, i was shown the most beautiful unconditional love you can possibly imaging. an old ladies hands made out of roots scooped some darkness from my heart, it then turned in to "spaghetti of snakes" on my chest, just to morph in to 2 big intertwining snakes that shoot out in to horizon leaving huge ball of white/gold/yellow light. I was shown all my unhealthy copping mechanisms that I have developed over years. I woke up in my mothers womb during one session, I have met my inner child, little petrified boy sitting in the corner of the most terrifying room made out of fear and pain, with green mouldy walls & darkness. I have "jumped from timeline to timeline" of my life to meet myself in diffrent ages, just to look at traumatising events with my mature, 40 years old consciousness, but feeling all the emotions on the level of that particular age. Many, many experiences and thoughts to share. But one thing is for sure... there are no bad trips, there are only good trips or necessary trips. If you are living in denial in your everyday life it will be brutally shown to you, to see it, feel it, experience it... just to come back and then do something about it. Mushrooms arent fixing you, they showing you whta has to be done, but work must be done after sessions. However there is a very blissful calmness for few days after every session, that can be extended by microdosing, which itself has amazing effects even when someone doesn't want to do proper dose of 🍄

My image was like a devil with horns and all. I think I was talking to the darker side of my psyche. Good talk and I got the message. The 4. time was a really bad run, my inner voice was screaming you dont need this for 5 hours loud in my head while I was in a fetal posision. After that I found a Professor in psychology on the youtube because I wanted to learn more. A year later he exploded with fame and here we are. Thank you Dr. Peterson for all your teachings. I took the mushrooms about 10 times now and I recognize the mirror-part, though I have to admit that I really can’t look at myself for more than 10-15 minutes, after that’s I’m starting to feel really horrible. I’ve had a rough youth and there is still al lot more to gain, so I won’t ever give up. But, absolutely great to read that it also has worked out for you.

I had an incredible pcilocybin experience this month. I've lived the last three months alone in a shelter I made by the woods, most stunning location... The bottom of a wee valley, drinking water straight from a spring. I had some thirty dried caps ground up in tea with honey and lemon. I began sitting by the stream as the moon rose and let myself say something of a prayer of gratitude whilst I waited for them to take effect. I let my mind settle and set a few 'parametres' too, letting my mind drift over those things I wished to take away from the experience, healing old wounds etc. I focused my mind on the wonders of nature around me and found myself feeling I was in loving company. While the effect was mounting I enjoyed the heavens, the almost telescopic clarity of focus building all the while until the horizon reached out geometric tendrils encompassing the moonlit clouds. The canopy of the trees became fractal nets intertwined with each other whilst reaching into the dome above. As I looked about I let myself enjoy each scene as a reflection of the majesty of mind and the astonishing power therein, the creative audacity of reality. Those passing, grotesque visions I guided myself to view likewise, as wondrous creative expressions which need not be feared. When the effect was nearing it's full magnitude, I moved inside to sit beside the stove, which, as everything else, I had carefully prepared before consuming my potion so as to avoid any unwelcome interruption to the experience and the positive mindset I wished to retain. The heat of the stove brought the experience into a new dimension, it washing over me inspiring an ecstatic impression of comforting love and goodwill. The fractal visions intensified and I allowed myself to drift into them, focusing my mind's eye to push progressively deeper, extending my concentration tentatively, daring myself to close my eyes and allow the visions to flood over me... And, oh, was it a flood. I began yawning, deeply, feeling my body releasing tension as with a good massage, I felt it was preparing for the meeting with whatever it was I looked towards when I closed my eyes, a chasm of visions, of love and of all-knowing, that feared yet adored, the terrifying terrific. When I had yawned my last and was envoloped, I retired to bed and allowed myself to curl up with my eyes closed in a small ball, warm beneath the covers, to float there in the well of love I felt myself swirling through. ...And then I had arrived somewhere else. Wreathed in glowing golden light I looked across jewelled, filagree capped minarettes, a serpentine helix snaked around one... and I began to laugh. The joke, to me, then, too absurd to bare: how could we believe ourselves anything other than the off-spring of Gods, of creatures of magic and wonder beyond all comprehension...? Was God's presence not obvious enough? And I Iaughed at the wonder I saw, there behind my closed eyes, again and again, there was no other expression befitting for such staggering clarity, such revelatory beauty. ...And in the deepest room of that place, I remember just a glimpse of it now... But at one point I reminded myself that I was still alive and, though I could indeed depart right there and then, comfortably, I should not. So I returned. And I rose to warm myself beside the fire as the peak passed. Then, I moved to sit in the hazel arch of my shelter's doorway, the moon above as I sat warm in my sleeping bag, cross-legged. I sat in Nirvana there for an hour before dawn, bliss, the halucinations gone, just a staggering clarity to my vision. The moonlight was bright, near full, the view it lit in silver beneath, beyond majestic. I smiled broadly at the ecstacy of existance, at the unbelievable good fortune I had been awarded with to look upon such a vista, at the rolling magnificence of the clouds dancing by, at the mighty trees and a tiny mushroom that had taken me to meet the Gods. ...Aye, turns out it's not such foolish notion after all.

I've experienced hallucinogenics many times, and have had sparks of your experience, I've never thought to set it up in advance. And I've never had the full and (I assume) lasting shifts in understanding of reality. Luckily, I usually tripped with my then boyfriend, a spiritual young man. Together we'd go to the river, open fields, and woods, and learn from nature. In time, although the essence of what we experienced never changed, its reality in our day-to-day lives receded markedly. Maybe because we graduated university and began the journey of careers, marriage and children. Could we have taken that message with us? I'd say he did a better job than I. Thank you for sharing your experience. It prompted me to reconsider my experiences all those years ago.

@@ExtraPencil2 Interesting. I have to say, I find the desire to 'hold on' to these experiences - those inexplicables we meet in life on those rare occassions, be they sobre visions or otherwise - well, life goes on, interminably. ...I think our ego says "I want it to be forever! I want to tell everyone!" ...But there's little to be gained from attempting to hold onto a vision, however majestic. I wrote this here as I'd meant to write the experience out for my own record and hadn't gotten around to it. I did magic mushrooms quite a few times from maybe 17-20yrs old and never had a good experience, nothing remotely comparable to the above anyway. My recent explorations were inspired by two factors - firstly, I had a very dark experience 3 years ago, a deep, traumatic betrayal which I found/find very hard to see past. In the aftermath of that I had a deep urge to go out into the desert and have a deep trip (it had been 20 years since my last)... I held that desire for 2 years but didn't have the opportunity to see it through. Secondly, I was curious to see what the effect would be now on my mature mind - minus all that adolescant angst and the burden of inconfidence and confusion of youth... Having done this, I have to say, I'd say these are drugs which suit maturity - it's a very different experience with that mental control that comes with age - for example, I was always worried I would 'stay crazy' as a youth doing them and that thought never occurred to me today - I had the patience and fortitude when it got a little too much to put my hand on my own shoulder, so's to speak, and guide myself awat from panic or negativity. Also, doing them today, not as a recreational experience but alone, with a clear focus on the potential healing qualities, framed the whole thing in an entirely different way. I'd highly recommend it, if nothing else, as a challenge in mental... Or 'mindful' control (though I dislike the Budhist conotations of that word). ...Above all, the experience proved for me, in the most startling way, that my mind yet has incredible creative power and secrets to show me... After a few years battling feelings of fatigue and weariness, of those doubts of perhaps being 'past it'... That experience entirely exploded those maladies. Aye. ...There be mysteries yet to unfold in the twilight hours of the soul. :-)

Brilliantly said! Very difficult to describe in words, the lessons of the eternal (eternal as in time, not in a God sense). They are experiential, so the words just dance around the frame as they do with art. Much of this fascinating conversation is technical, avoiding deep dives into the subjective experiences of subjects. I was taught by an extraordinarily powerful plant.... I went with questions that I hoped to have answered... Instead I was introduced to source, evolution and my position as only a single aperture of the whole. I left my body, and it was hard to remember how to swallow water when required. At one point the body could not swallow food. I developed a serious appreciation of the subtle nuances of life, the effort it had taken to evolve to this level, whereby one might enjoy any number of nice tasting tea's, or flowers, or soft furnishings ad infinitum. My experience was 10 hours, the first few were absolutely wonderful, fascinating! I wasn't told about the universe.... I was shown. My Shamen was able to describe exactly what I was seeing and move within this alien realm beside me. I was deeply aware that I had lived forever, as have we all..... And that our little ego's provided different perspectives to enable source to see the conundrums from as many perspectives as possible. Unfortunately we all forgot we were source though... It's funny if I think about it now.... How silly that we all forget and think of ourselves as individuals. After the event my entire nervous system was reset. My senses were like that of a newborn.... Music blew my mind for weeks!!! I couldn't stop listening to music, especially tribal rhythms. Tastes were sensational.... I took a while to process what I had experienced. It was almost a year ago now and I'm still learning from the experience. I should mention that during the experience I also spent what felt like 2 years dying under a bridge in Calkuta. I've never been there and it was a very difficult experience. But afterwards it made me deeply grateful for the numerous material and social luxuries we enjoy today. Profound and easily the most extraordinary experience in 45 years on planet Earth 🌍

“The demon” or “dragon” he speaks of in the classic bad trip experience - I believe that this personification imagery is just our consciousness’ way of simplifying those terrifying feelings/emotions with representative memory. A dragon or demon is usually representative of a bad experience in the human experience, and so in order to explain and rationalize what we feel during a psychedelic experience, our minds simplify it by saying “oh I saw an evil demon that wouldn’t leave me alone” when in actuality the evil demon is just our consciousness reflecting on itself so deeply that it becomes terrified of what it sees.

Yeah I totally agree with this assessment. It's unfortunately common for the uninitiated to hear these sensationalised stories and manifest this "demon" during their first trip, simply through their expectations of the experience. They might have thoughts along the lines of "this is a bit unfamiliar and somewhat scary, this must be the demon they were talking about, why is he forcing me to live through these thoughts", inadvertently warping their experience and falsely attributing some kind of malicious intent and "otherness" to the products of their own mind. This usually ends up creating unnecessary internal resistance that breaks their trust in the experience, amplifying all kinds of delusional paranoias, and creating a very uncomfortable and terrifying headspace. I think it's best to go into the experience expecting to communicate with nothing more than one's own subconscious desires, traumas, and embedded beliefs. To fully identify with the experience is to affirm one's internal sense of agency and control.

The implication is that closure (which I believe is meant here as "closing up"), and its resulting hopelessness, must come from a faulty determination of the maturation of circumstances. In other words, if circumstances in life were always allowed to continue and were taken on with an open mindset, that "matured" circumstances would eventually prove themselves to be worth the openness: to be worth NOT closing up to them. And, that's hope, I guess. But, isn't it up to the individual to determine when circumstances have matured and that closing up is justified? To imply that it's not up to them while having no good reference for when closing up is actually justified seems a rather hopeless situation to me.

A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. There were so many amazing insights to unpack here. Dr Griffith’s admonition to remain curious during the experience, and query characters you meet along the way what meaning they represent as reflections of our unconscious is so similar to lucid dream work; wherein the dreamer has the opportunity to develop the same inner dialogue with his dream characters if he can ground & maintain his lucidity. I am considering a large dose of cubensis to work with trauma & alcoholism; and wonder if I could use lucid dream work to try to “strengthen” my ability to stay grounded during my upcoming psychedelic experience, to help dispel any anxiety or fear I expect to experience. I really appreciate how Dr Griffiths was careful to advise those using psychedelics to not become angry or confrontational with their demonic or dark psychedelic characters, as that apparently derails the experience into an internal struggle. As that might likely be my reaction, I am very grateful for his careful explanation here to endeavor to “stay curious” as much as possible throughout the experience. If I’m not able to accomplish this on lucid dreams before my “trip”, perhaps I can attempt something similar during meditation to push that intention deep into my psyche. Another comment or question I have is regarding the synthetic psilocybin that Hopkins is using. I wonder if mushrooms in their natural state have other compounds which add dimensionality, positive or negative, to the experience; similar to Cannabis’s so-called “entourage effect” via multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, etc.

I doubt synth has the connection that the entheogen fungi has Safe environment in my opinion can be aided by cleanliness. Make sure you clean your place. Clean your mind (no drinking the day before) and try and meditate or minimally deep breathing exercises. Long slow exhales focus on solar plexus. Use your diaphragm. Cleanse your body during the uncomfortable come-up phase. Well-timed shower can aid in relaxation as well. Fresh fruit tray for later. Make sure to ground outside if you can. I stay clear of electronic (blue screen) when on high doses, at least for the first while. Pictures and stuff can seed the unconscious mind and be recycled during closed eye visuals Best of luck!! Micro-dosing may help for some of your concerns, but the bigger trips can be quite a massive shift in perception. 10000' view Sometimes we're too close to the trees to see the forest :)

One time, when I was hiking with a couple of friends, we took some shrooms on a trail while climbing the Śniezka peak (it's in Poland) on a cold autumn day. Snow was already piled up while we were climbing the last stair. I was pretty high at that moment, but the effects didn't make the hiking any bit harder. Quiet opposite, I felt hyper-sensitive to my surroundings, like it was influencing every single move i made to make it most energy efficient. None the less, on this trip, for the first time in my live, I felt a something I can sincerely describe as a religious experience. We were passing a group of tourist-pilgrims led by a priest. When I saw him walking in front of the group, with a cross in his hand, saying "In the name of god!", I really felt some kind of floating energy around them. Not even from him generally, but from the whole group, bonded in this experience, connecting to a deity in a honoring way, experiencing nice views and climbing peak together. I can't even describe it, but it just made me feel good and positive about them, like it motivated myself to achieve my goals and self improve. I reconsidered how small are we in our struggle against forces of nature alone, and how much using such patterns empowers us as a group.

I had several experiences without any substances involved coming so to say out of the blue, without any warning. The last one I had 13 years ago and it lasted nearly 6 weeks. That what we call the ego disappears and that what is left is much more an it than an I. It's not that you just feel united to everything, you also see it in everything. You see peoples fear, you see peoples desires, so see their curtain and and and. I m an artist and I started to pray in the middle of the night, believe me, this is not what I did before and it behind my I also started to draw mandalas. I followed petersons advice and just started focusing on keeping my room tidy. 4 years later and next year (2022). I will transfer to a university with an associates degree in computer science. Getting a 4 year degree is taking me 5 years because my aforementioned lack of ability, but starting with basic algebra to now ive just about conquered calculus. Its still a struggle, but ive already exceeded the expectations I had set forth for myself, and im halfway towards getting a bachelors in CS, which pretty much includes most of the math involved with an engineer degree. A little too excited to let Roland finish answering the last questions, I know it's his podcast but maybe he should dial down his minds thinking and crank up the listening a few notches. You know he must have a lot of practice from his clinical days, getting a little rusty perhaps, he is not rude but it was coming off that way a tad bit.

Jordans interviewing skills are improving drastically. He has the ability to stop his guests going off on to many tangents, even though he loves a tangent himself. In this interview he was able to get around an obvious humbleness and allow us to see the achievements of this excellent researcher.

@@lenafelipe compare it to older interviews, he is improving. I think he treats these more as conversations than interviews and has his idea of where he wants the conversation to go, and is a little to controlling when it drifts away from that. Interviewing is hard, Jordan is usually better when he is the interviewee he seems to turn that into a more natural flowing conversation. * IDK if interviewee is a word.

The things we think are true become true when we start to believe it. One thing I learned when taking psychedelics is that our realizations or visuals while on it, as long as it stems from goodness, from love, without judgement or ego, is true. It becomes one’s own reality amidst all other other realities. If one person can be ugly and one person can find that person beautiful, that’s an example of different realities. Our world is varied. The answer lies not elsewhere but within yourself. I’m happy to expound more on my realizations or to answer any question about tripping on LSD. I’m not saying I’m completely correct but if I’m able to help give clarification to others who are curious then I’m happy to do so.

I'm sure I am not the only person here that has experienced L.S.D ,D.M.T and Ayahuasca. I'm 64 now and I took my first L.S.D trip at the age of 14. I don't really see it as such a huge mystery. Other than yes, psychotropic drugs are not a toy. Yes they are a sacrament. I worked that out at 14. Myself and my psychonauat friends mantra was always. The whole world needs to experience this. It ain't rocket science. It's fundamental to ones life journey. The proof is in the pudding. I loved the intellectualizing, the discussion. Its a little like talking about what dancing is .If you have ever never heard music. The trip is the trip. And it's different yet the same for everyone. That said. I thoroughly enjoyed the discourse. Love is the only truth worth understanding.

If anyone sees this comment, neuroscience came out of the Hippocratic traditions of Ancient Greece. As of circa 200 ce that Claudius Galenus gave birth to the established ideas surrounding the brain and mental processes, in which physical brain matter affected behaviour, in particular, relating to the Roman Gladiators. No idea why Jordan would think modern psychology gave birth to neuroscience. Behaviourism is an analytical approach to observing behaviour based on stimuli, it came from 19th century psychology research.

The funny thing with that statement is you can only understand what is going on if the TRUTH is being told . True history has not been told for over 200 years and total LIES have been told since 1898 . The word reality is a funny word because your reality is who ever and what ever is in control at the present time .The word doesnt mean that what we are experiencing anything other then our own perception on what we as individuals understand . If you listen to MSM and believe then your reality is different then mine .

@4tran A lie is a lie is a lie no matter what form you want to use it in . When the truth is not told in anything that has happened in history over the last 200 years then it is a lie and distorts everything from that point on. The people holding the power and money now have used both plus the lies to gain a power now that probably cant be stopped .This group does what they accuse the other so called evil people of the past of doing and 10 times worse but when you have total control of every part of society you cant be questioned .

Usually Dr. Peterson is very calm and patient and let's whoever he is speaking with talk and get their thoughts out but you can see the pure excitement and curiosity in that he jumps from place to place with his thoughts. He's like a kid in a candy store! So cool to watch and such a wonderful topic. I listen to Dr. Peterson regularly but recently started reading Michael Pollan's "How to Change Your Mind" which is about psychedelics. I wanted to hear what Dr. Peterson had to say about it and saw this interview with one of the people mentioned in the book, Roland Griffiths, and knew I had to watch. So neat to see Dr. Peterson so genuinely excited about a topic.
