Rick Rubin - Magic, Everyday Mystery, and Getting Creative
The flow and the ingredients by which an idea becomes an offering - and life practices which call that alchemy forth. The mystery of it all that can only be named and wondered at - and the ordinary mystery that creativity is a human birthright, a way of being rather than doing, that beckons to us all, in everything we do, from crafting something to conversing to the arranging of furniture in a room.
This is where Krista goes with the rock star music producer Rick Rubin. It's not a conversation about the creative process of the many great musicians he's worked with - but a conversation that is for and about us all.
There are some surprises, too, in his lovely, soothing voice - like the way he finds a metaphor for all of life in pro wrestling. And he leaves the doors of his studio wide open as they speak, so there is a soundtrack of ocean waves.
ABOUT
Rick Rubin has been a singular, transformative creative muse for artists across genres and generations - from the @BeastieBoys to Johnny Cash, from Public Enemy to the @RedHotChiliPeppers from @adele to Jay-Z. To name just a few. His new (and first) book is "The Creative Act: A Way of Being". He is co-founder of the record label Def Jam Recordings, and former co-president of Columbia Records. He is also one of the hosts of the podcast, "Broken Record".

Rick just casually drops the meaning of life "Being human is enjoying what you enjoy and sharing what you see."
"I think when you really listen to someone they act differently and I think most people are not used to being heard" - Rick Rubin spitting truth

Oh wow, this is great. I really like this. It struck a chord in me. I love ❤️ it actually. Can you say it again please, this time a slightly different way so that I can be further enriched by your insight on a matter that matters more than most. It's important. It's an important chord you struck in me. Pluck it again, this time in the key of .. oh i don't know, C. Oh boy, I can't wait to see it, to hear and feel it vibrate the frequency of silence into nothing but pure quantum potential. I think you found the key to the inner universe of our humanity. Sing it again, let the angels rejoice. 😇

So true!!!!!
I’ve noticed in all of Rick’s interviews his listening (*active listening*) is so much deeper than the interviewers and I have to wonder what that is like for him. I hope he has people in his life who listen as deeply to him as he does to others.

So much deeper ? 🤔 I maybe haven’t heard enough of his interviews 🤷🏻♀️ I like what he has to say so I shall Edit: just listened to part of him and gladwell and Rubin asks questions I guess cause he is constantly learning and just gives himself opportunities to listen 🤷♂️

Not a lot of people are aware of this new market, only a handful know how it works, I was fortunate to reach out to Ms. Gardner the beginning of the year, she put me through the basics as a mentor would do, I learnt and earned massively from trading at the comfort of my home.

I Grew up with Rick, I fact he was my closest friend for a few years, we slept over each others houses when we were kids learning magic. we formed a magic clube in Long Beach and did a show in High School together.. .he lived in Lido Beach actually, I'm from Long Beach...I live in LA now and would love to get a message to him... , Last time I saw him was at his Bar Mitzvah in Upstate NY. My name is Gene Silberman..
53:43 David Lynch says the same thing! You don't create the idea, you catch the idea. Just like you don't create the fish. You catch the fish. Its absolutely true. When I write music it feels as if I'm hearing my ideas on a radio from another dimension.

"What do I find beautiful today that I didn't notice yesterday?" I love that.
Rick Rubin is exactly what I needed at this point in my life and journey. I suspect he is what the world needs right now. Welcome to all those who absolutely resonate with and are inspired by Rick. He is a great place for our heads to spend some time with.
"Awareness needs constant refreshing". Simply said. So true!
I loved this deep, interesting, and enjoyable interview. I am a very sensitive person and have been criticized by family; however, as an adult I have learned to embrace that aspect of my being and it makes me who I am. ❤ I love deeply❣
When Rick said he had trouble finishing projects due to seeing the additional possibilities in trying other ways of creating/finishing a project. Omg! That made me feel so comforted because I too struggle to finish certain projects due to this same way of thinking and felt like something was wrong with my creative process🙏✨🖤.

For years I was a perfectionist to the point that I never finished anything. There's a fine line between making something the best it can be and being a perfectionist. And the game is to ride that line as closely as you can.

I like what you are saying. My creative mind has been stuck on a loop of new possibilities for months now which has proved very negative as I thought there was something wring with me. I just got excited all the time and constantly changing the goal posts. Im going to follow his guidance and I have just ordered his book
Rick, reading your book, was realizing we are not alone. It's difficult to explain that our thoughts are not our own and never have been. Synchronicity is a hell of a drug. True, without falsehood, and certain. A fellow only child;)

Not really. He actually gets paid tons of money and hardly even shows up to the studio. He’s outgrown himself at this point
He may easily be the most humble person I’ve ever listened to.
The inability to judge and access is lack of experience, especially in the art of critique. Love Rick’s response to this - write a lot. In time look at it like a reader. It’s dumbfounding to me how often Rick offers very clear & accurate advise to the people who interview him and it’s not even heard or absorbed by them in the moment. It’s obvious Rick’s had extensive therapy. It’s almost as though he has studied therapeutic rapport and all of the elements of active listening and presence.
The next book I get is going to be Rick’s book. He’s an interesting person. He’s cool because he shares. He seems unconventional on one hand and the other he’s a total genius, a wizard, I can’t believe how many different artists he worked with. He made me laugh because in another interview he was basically like I don’t use whatever piece of equipment he was describing, maybe it was some kind of sound board, I could be wrong but it’s along those lines, I laughed out loud because Rick is next level. The more I hear him talk he’s just a decent person. Raw honesty. I respect that. Great outlook on life. Starting Def Jam. That’s wild. Peace

@@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes thats literally why i clicked on this video. Learnt so much about rubin 10 years ago at music college, 2 years after leaving college i started looking into the occult,, new age woo woo, bill cooper mystery babylon etc. This shit is really everywhere now. And everyone who's someone seems to be talking about it. Reality is getting super odd.
In bed 10.53pm and winding down from a busy day listening to this is amazing conversation, thank you!
I love his thinking - super inspiring, welcoming and nurturing.
Such a deep and profound conversation, magical, humble, loving! Very grateful for the recommended Richard Rudd book, it's a treasure, as far as I can tell - every one of his works.
I first saw Public Enemy in 1989 at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall with Queen Latifah and Biz Markie (amongst others) what a beautiful energy they had - I had no idea Rick Rubin was involved - mad respect for the music and the process ❤
So excited to hear this! RR’s energy is pure and the only words that come to mind are cosmic creativity. I loved Revival, those who didn’t most likely will when they raise their consciousness.💚💐🌞
I could listen to Rick talk all day!! He is so open minded and truly recognizes the most beautiful things in life in so many forms that it's presented to him.
Masterpiece! Kudos for both of you and the whole team.
So blessed to hear this.. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 🙏

I'm gonna have to start adding ocean waves ambience to all podcasts I listen to going forward. that was nice
Love how he mentions how not acting somewhere else it arises. I've seen it many times especially in music. My ex was a Nashville musician.....now he's gone its my turn to let the vibe flow.
absolutely in love with this vibe❤ admiration for the interlocutors
great player, great starter, im exhaugstive in what is possible, im not a great finisher. and the open phases of planting and experimenting and coding i love this
This is the kind of conversation I have with myself
Anything is possible. I wanna link up Rick and create a timeless album.
16:35 is one of the best drops ever. Great interview.
She keeps changing the subject. Every time he starts going deeper, she takes the whole thing right back to the surface. She keeps it in her own comfort zone. Regardless, I’ve got to say the overall interview was really helpful for where I’m at right now and I appreciate it.
When documenting a conversation with someone as brilliant and articulate as Rick Rubin, get him going and then step out of the way. Dont just start talking too. Let the brilliant mind of the two of you speak. This is a trap many interviewers fall into, trying to show how they “get it” too much and too often, and with questions so long that the listener begins wishing Rick was still talking. Its unfortunate for this being as good of a document as it might have been. The questions really do get long and rambling pretty often. The “conversation” part is in being a great listener for where to follow the flow next, not just in talking also. I do mean this to be helpful, from a listener perspective. Sometimes this interview is excellent…. But clearly those times will be when Rick Rubin is sharing his insights.

Great interview. Couldn't disagree more. Tippet's method is highly intuative and conversational and many of the questions she asks lead to Ruben offering more than just the typical talking points many interviewers go for. The very final question is a wonderful example. Two thoughtful humans sharing thoughtfully about humanity. Well done to both.
I have been VVatching (since the '80's..). I trust this Guy. Love, from Portland, Oregon.
Shoutout to the technology that trimmed out Rick Rubin's head from the photo background lol

Wow,, how deeply moved I am by these emotions arising as I really listen and arising moves again into these tears feeling the pressure releasing through these very personal pinpoints that opened up helping me so much clearing my inner world from this clutter almost an acupuncture energetically . Every segment was a gift & the beautifully articulated questions were spoken with such reverence and love Brilliance and simplicity and the flow and connection really brought this playful wisdom and excitement and the significant words , brought to life expressions that were so happy to pop up with pleasure to be seen and heard in the most positive ways and knowing it is love Wow I am really beyond words to convey my love and appreciation for this conversation. ❤

A gem of an episode for all creators. Two additional highlights: (1) Tippett refers to Rubin as a "midwife," which must be a reference to Plato's Theaetetus (my hope :) ) and (2) Rubin consistently says "based on" instead of the misnomer "based off."

Great interview! "It" comes through the aether. The aether is said to be that magic “invisible” substrate that connects us all to the “Hive Mind” as well as “source”. "A rudimentary consciousness may be rooted in this deep substratum of existence.” There is consciousness in the aether, like there is data in the wifi.

Very interesting thank you for making this video. My daughter is an only child, so I can relate to the alone time. 1. Great art comes from a certain way of being, noticing, and experiencing the world - not just from the act of making something. Cultivate presence, openness, curiosity. 2. When getting feedback, prioritize people who genuinely care about you and your work rather than general audiences. Start with a "welcoming audience." 3. When collaborating, focus on finding the best ideas rather than politicking to get yours to win. Remove ego from the equation. 4. To break creative ruts, sometimes double down and go deeper into your patterns. Other times, consciously pivot and explore the opposite direction. Both can yield insights. 5. Distractions can be good or bad. Good distractions provide just enough interference to disrupt overthinking and let inspiration through. 6. Consume a lot of art and information, but do it for enjoyment rather than homework. Immerse yourself in what intrigues you. 7. Commit fully to creative projects, even if you don't know where they will lead. Persist through uncertainty and allow ideas to emerge.

Picked this one to listen to -- but lord -- RR is getting a LOT of exposure. Going to have to sample a few of his conversations. But if I may -- Rick -- did you not notice Paul McCartney's incessant gum chewing? I enjoyed this as my first interview to listen to at length. I think what he happened upon and how that went down, lightning, just some wow material.
What unnamed brother band is he referring to?
I just want to say thank you.
Absolutely!
Strong movement of organizations.

19:16 Is he referring to A way of being book?
What's the song of the 31:32?
I would love to know what Rick (or anyone else) thinks about medication for mental health issues and creativity. As a child I always wanted to be an artist. It was all i ever did (draw and paint) and I was all set to go to art college but at 17 I was also medicated for serious depression and whilst the medication worked in the way it was supposed to, I lost all interest in painting. I dropped out of art school (and studied literature instead) and for a couple of decades spent my life getting up to all kinds of things except creating. Having been on my own healing journey for about ten years, and havign peeled back various layers, I have finally reclaimed this lost part of myself and it feels so good.
What's the song called at 44:52 ?
