Nick Cave - Loss, Yearning, Transcendence
Here are some experiences to which Nick Cave gives voice and song: the "universal condition" of yearning, and of loss; a "spirituality of rigor"; and the transcendent and moral dimensions of what music is about. This Australian musician, writer, and actor first made a name in the wild world of ’80s post-punk and later with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (@nickcave) He also underwent public struggles with addiction and rehab.
Since the accidental death of his 15-year-old son Arthur in 2015, and a few years later, the death of his eldest child Jethro, he has entered yet another transfigured era, co-created an exquisite book called Faith, Hope and Carnage, and become a frank and eloquent interlocutor on grief. As a human and a songwriter, Nick Cave is an embodiment of a life examined and evolved. He sat with Krista in the On Being studio in Minneapolis, and the gorgeous conversation that followed is woven in this episode with his gorgeous music.

Nick Cave is a true master at expressing the deepest feelings through words and music.
What a gift. This conversation was exquisite. Thank you both, and to all the folks that create things like this. A richer world we have because of your generous work.
Beautiful correspondence. Loss, grief and grace. The terrible beauty of the world and the miracle of sublime creation. Put me in mind of John O'Donohue at times.
Great job...loved the conversation dance...music is a solution to matters...brilliant 💜🙏
Just love Nick. So eloquent and a great poet. Thank you!
Thank you Mr Cave for sharing ,, 🙏,,
Thank you once again for your verbal grace and eloquence on subjects that many shy away from. Yet, it’s the common thread binding us to each other. Genuflecting in gratitude.
Good man Mr.Cave a man for every generation.
NC, like a preacher of love, losses...and life.
Really enjoyed this conversation. Thank you!
Ghosteen was the soundtrack to my life when I went through the most difficult period of my life i ever went through, right before the pandemic started. I've felt so deeply touched by it and it helped me process the enormous energies that went through me at that time. I still get chills whenever I hear any of the songs... They can't really be separated from each other either... A unity of spirituality and catharsis... I also want to add that I strongly feel that sense of resonance and spiritual connection to Nick's older work... If you've never seen Der Himmel Über Berlin, I highly recommend it, so you can hear Nick sing From Her to Eternity. It's magical....
Being in disbelief and lost searching for meaning after traumatic experiences is simply to be human but you must keep trying even the odds are stacked against you.
Here in my studio, painting dark and mysterious things, it was a pleasure to hang out with you both in such a profound conversation. Thank you for the beauty.

I want to see- is your work online?
As a bereved father I understand and empathise so much with what's being said here. I've sought help but have found 'councellors' just dont get it unless they've 'been there' and experienced the path similar to mine before and after the death. Destroying, 'obliterating'.

I relate. My son passed away in 2014 & not many people can go to the depths of this with you. It's a very isolating experience
Beautiful conversation
Terrific episode. Thank you.
I have always, always made time to listen to NC. I have recognized that within the body of work and growth he has emanated upon us.. that through this I believe he has tapped into something that we can understand about grief and about ourselves. An interchange to be able to accept this transformation and all that it entails. It is very powerful and maybe my view of this is biased because he is a musician and all my best loves and friends are songs. His honesty and simplistic explanation to the conception of Ghosteeen is thee best communion he has shared with us (in my opinion) . Thank you for taking the time to post and share and give us this inspired communicative for everyone to share and embrace. And thank you Nick Cave.
Thank you for this beautiful conversation ❤
