    Exactly, you hit the nail on the head. Narcotics did him in.. What's ironic about it. The Legends he mentioned that was a token for MTV,also went on to pass due to some form of Drug abuse. Life is not a joke out here. It's real.

    Prince never begged or treated MTV to play his videos, that was MTV executive decision, even before Prince videos, MTV was splaying black artists like Eddie Grant, Musical Youth Stevie Wonder, The Specials, Donna Summers, Tina Turner, Hendrix etc. This James comment was out of bitterness and jealousy.

    Before I got into Prince and Michael back in the 80's ..I was following Rick's Career. But, he started to lose momentum after Street Songs. What I can say happily is, I had a chance to see all three Michael Jackson , Rick James, and Prince Live in concert. I saw Rick James only once back in 83 in New York. Michael Jackson several times in Europe Live. and Prince once in New York and several times in Europe. In my life time I saw these Legendary Iconic figures do their thing. For that I'am so grateful not everyone can say that. May their souls Rest in Love. I thank them for inspiring my artistic ambitions. I learned a lot from all three.

    STREET SONGS was Rick's best album, but did you know that a lot of the music on it was Prince? Rick James stoled Prince's pre-programmed synthesizer and used the music from it on the STREET SONGS ALBUM. Teena Marie told the whole story in an interview. On the song GIVE IT TO ME BABY that music is so Prince, lol!!!

Dont be Shitting on Rick James like he was some fake ass Milli Vanilli or some shit.. if Prince stole Rick's idea of starting an all girl singing group, backed by music Rick wrote - then it was on an Krackin.. and respect the post your commenting about - it has nothing to do with throwing dirt on Rick James - and as Prince is being booed off stage TWICE at the Stones concert in L.A. - Rick James is doing what no other R&B, Funk, Punk Funk, group could do - Sell out the"Fabulous Forum" in L.A. 3 nights in a row - thats Star Power - but then as time went on Prince proved his Ladies High Heels were better than Rick's Hip High Boots

    Also respect to David Bowie(RIP) who called out MTVs' clear racial bent in the 80s. James' perspective on Jackson and Prince carry more weight and validity because he was being directly affected by discrimination. It is sad though that his statements are also tainted by his jealousy of Princes' successes musically, dramatically and in terms of broader appeal.

    @daddyrichten It might also make more sense from a business/statistical standpoint - there are far more white people in America than black people, therefore you would cater more towards the larger demographic - more people = more money. Music shouldn't be about races - the idea that music by black folks is only for black folks and music by white folks is only for white folks is asinine, but maybe MTV thought that Rick's music would not appeal to white audiences as much as metal and rock. I don't know much of his music, but I'd say that a lot of his music is strongly funk - which MTV probably thought that it would not appeal/resonate with the larger audience - white people. Personally, of the limited stuff that I have heard by him, I did enjoy listening to, although I'm not American, and although I am European - I might not be proper European, since I'm from, what is considered to be, the Balkans. I very much disagree with Rick saying that the first thing he is is black, and the second that he is a person - he is implying that MTV only play Prince and Michael Jackson so that MTV is not perceived or called out as racist (tokenism) - their music videos are played just because they are black (Rick's first thing), and not because their music is considered to be good (thus robbing them of their personality and individuality - Rick's second thing - pushed to the sideline) - if Rick had reversed that order then the claim would be properly aligned with the anti-tokenism "My individuality, character, and personality will not be reduced to a token and I will not be a tool/pawn for tokenism - if they're going to play my music videos just because I'm black, then I will not allow that - and neither should other artists allow that, specifically black ones." - although I think he was either jealous or misguided to say these things and think in this way. Although I might be wrong.

    Rick as great as he was was not as prolific as Prince. Rick let drugs and ass mess him up. Prince was VERY clear and focused. He left a huge body of work. However i prefer Rick James music cuz i get him. Prince i never quite understood. Now, Im researching his stuff now though.

    The channel that was revolutionizing the industry was boosted by Michael Jackson's innovative music video production. So who was really revolutionizing the game?

  • @garytucker3563

    @garytucker3563

    5 жыл бұрын

    I get what you're saying bro, and VERY TRUE, Michael and Quincy were changing the game, but let's not forget a couple of things though. Like Rick said, if Michael would have said anything pro black at that time, thus killing the notion to the white owned and operated corps like MTV that MJ was "safe and harmless" to the young white audiences, what what would the odds of him ever being able to get the likes of John Landis and Rick Baker ( JL --> director/ RB --> EFX genius of Thriller )? And when they are talking about revolutionizing, remember also about the conversion of the 70's era "big arena " rock to "big hair" rock video (ex. Van Halen, Aerosmith, Guns n Roses, Twisted Sister), daring and risky performers like Madonna, and ESPECIALLY British New Wave whom were taking amazing creative chances (Dire Straits - Money for Nothing, AHA - Take on Me, Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer ). So in retrospect, innovation would have happened with or without MJ and Prince, just being honest. Of course we all know, nothing like Thriller had been done like that, but werewolves and horror things weren't a thing for black folks, so the likes of an Ozzy Osbourne would have definitely "went there", just MJ beat them to it, LOL!

    I would say that MJ revolutionized the music video period. I remember other artists of that time being interviewed and they would say, "...And now we HAVE to dance in our videos." A direct result of the popularity/innovation of MJ's music videos.

    Also before Thriller, the media were not giving black entertainers a fair platform as was the case with Michael again whom despite having a critically acclaimed album in Off The Wall that was also a commercial success, selling 20 million copies would not even get a cover story on Rolling Stone magazine in 1980. All that turned into motivation for the album that was Thriller.

    @J Crash ... Thank you kindly for the huge compliment on my youthful look, I get it often. However I'm about to be a great grandmother soon and believe in holding up my youthful looks and spirit for as long as I'm granted to. I was born in 1960 and raised upstairs over a tavern as a little girl and listened to music each day before heading off to school and the music didnt stop playing until 2:a.m. the following morn. Music became my first Love and it was Marvin Gaye's songs that wiped a many of my tears away during that time of the experiences I endured being raised up over the bar. So yes, I lived through all those years and still listen to music on a daily basis for without it I believe I would die. So far as for my adding the 90's to my personal opinion of great music ... How can one forget the Priceless 90's songs of some of these music artists and there songs? Whitney Houston ( I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU) Janet Jackson ( THAT'S THE WAY LOVE GOES) R. Kelly ( IBELIEVE I CAN FLY) Maxwell ( TIL THE COPS COME KNOCKING) Michael Jackson ( REMEMBER THE TIME) Sade ( THIS IS NO ORDINARY LOVE) Jodici ( FOREVER MY LADY) Lisa Fischer ( HOW CAN I EASE THE PAIN) Angie Stone ( NO MORE RAIN) Tyrese ( SWEET LADY ) Shai ( IF I EVER FALL IN LOVE ) Mariah Carey ( EMOTIONS ) Faith Evans ( SOON AS I GET HOME) Lauryn Hill ( KILLING ME SOFTLY ) Mary J. Blidge ( REMINESE ) Brandy, Dru Hill, Keith Washington, Boyz ll Men and many more. No, I don't need my head examined, I just have good taste in music ( my personal opinion). If you thought the 90's had no taste, then I respect your personal opinion. However, In spite of our differences, we all can agree on one thing and that is that ... MUSIC IS A PRICELESS THING.

To me, music is the sound of everything we do, Something simple as water dripping from a faucet. That's how deep I'm into the sounds of music. To have a gifted talented to sing like a bird is so PRICELESS. If you could pick up a stick and bang it on a can and make a rythum out of it, that's too is PRICELESS to me. When a baby cries out loud for the very first time that's jazz to my ears, believe that. Music artists and their tunes just makes my day and I thank God I was born at a time to witness the first releases of many of their songs ... PRICELESS

    It makes sense when you look at how Prince and Rick James female groups out there with the Mary Jane Girls vs. Vanity 6. I remember how Vanity tried to disassociate herself from being black and stated she was Canadian (which is true). Hence, led her to have her a role in the movie Action Jackson which is kind of ironic LOL! Prince knew how to promote without even touching the race card. That's why he had commercial success and it spread over to his proteges with Vanity, Apollonia and Sheila E.
