I actually got to meet Mr. Rick James face to face 6 months before his passing. I work as a bouncer/doorman in Hollywood Ca for almost 25 yrs and NEVER got Star struck till the moment i seen Rick James walk into the Club i was working at. When he walked in he looked right at me, walked up to me an said.."YOUNG BROTHER WHERE IS THE V.I.P SMOKE ROOM AT???" I looked at him and couldn't speak lmao. My coworker said "I BELIEVE IT'S RIGHT HERE SIR". Rick looked at me an said thank you an walked in. He was with about a dozen people. My coworker was like Man WTF happened to you!??.. i told him i wanted to get autograph, i wanted to tell him i have all his music, i wanted to ask him if the Charlie Murphy stories was True but couldn't speak or move Lmfao!. Wow, totally disagree. Rick James was a great musician, with a longer run than many, many pop stars have. Prince was revolutionary in his style. To me it's fascinating that the two were so close, because as musical projects they were fundamentally different. Prince was much more experimental. Amadeus typifies the idiotic Hollywood myth of the artist: one or the other, genius or mediocre. Amadeus is an insult to genius and mediocrity alike!!
@jamie40845 жыл бұрын
These 2 legends' competitive drive was unhealthy ... but it gave us the jams of the century. Here in Buffalo NY we have Rick James funk fest every year. I see Levi at Rite aide drug store often when he's in town. Irony here is, Rite Aide is across the street from Forest lawn, where Rick is interned. I frequent this cemetery weekly, and live a 5 minute walk from the cemetery. Rick is always on my visit list, along with my own loved ones and friends...I worked 2nd front at Prince 1999 tour here in Buffalo with the Time and Vanity 6... LOL, you could see nothing of Prince except his boots when leaving for the bus...he was that short he was dwarfed by his guards. Never knew back then about their rivalry though

There was another reason that caused the hatred and animosity between Rick and Prince. Rick discovered and dated Vanity (Denise Matthews), and had planned to make her the lead singer of his newly formed all girl group, The Mary Jane Girls. But, then Vanity met Prince (at the American Music Awards) and left Rick for Prince. Prince then formed his own girl group, Vanity 6, making his new girlfriend, Vanity the lead singer. The rest is history!

@J @J Prince was never out of the spotlight. He never stopped putting out music. He was still doing concerts only months before he died. He even had 2 sold-out concerts in my city only 3 months before he died. I didn't get to go at the time because I didn't have the money. I didn't know he would die only months later. I still thought at some point I would have a chance to see him. Anyway, what happened is that Prince was old school and didn't like streaming services and KZread. He didn't want people to be able to access his music like that (for free) and he not get paid. He didn't trust newer technology. Prince was always problematic for the music industry because he knew how shady it was. Because of that, the younger generation didn't know who he was or his music. Those of us over 30 always remained loyal fans.

He started dressing in all black, dabbling in Eastern religion (when he was a Jehovah's witness) and returned home to Minnesota. He took the same substance he almost died from the following week right before a doctor's son was to pick him up and fly him to rehab. Dude was prepping for the end. He didn't even care about the catalog he so valiantly fought WB over. Sounds more like he'd had it and was ready for the mothership.

Then sadly we end up losing him 6 months later. R.I.P TO THE 👑 OF FUNK N ROLL And THANK YOU 🙏🏾
That ending is everything!!! 😂😂😂
It's tragic, they were both exceptional talents still sorely missed.

Rick James was a real talent. Genuinely gifted musician. Shame it had to turn out like that.
SAD Rick was that Dude and so was Prince!!!! RIP RICK and Prince!!!!
I grew up listening to both of those remarkable talents...they were geniuses...as a black man it was a honor to had their music in my life...they changed the world
The 80's caught up to them both ! .....Rick was just 56 and Prince was 57.....very sad indeed. I am 56 on 5/18...I grew up with these legends !
@momonie4

Rick was older than Prince, had he lived he would be 71 this year.
Prince was a powerful force in music...but so was Rick James......Fuck the ego and the rivalries,in the end,they are both legends in funk, forever. The world feels a little empty thinking on how both these brothers are gone now,and MJ to....man.... time the avenger just keeps moving on.
And rest in peace Charlie Murphy, who started this Prince/Rick James story telling trend. He was the best at telling them.

Mike Judge producer... that explains why I kept thought I was hearing Hank Hill during the narration.
Rick could mastered funk with a horn session, like George Clinton, but Prince tried it with NPG and never could. Princes NPG stuff did not have mass audience he once had. Still loved him went on Paisley Park tour Tuesday, he is missed dearly!

Prince was not murdered. If anything, he committed suicide. He visited his old friends. Several people said he told them he'd done everything he wanted to do-who says that at 57? He started dressing in all black, dabbling in Eastern religion (when he was a Jehovah's witness) and returned home to Minnesota. He took the same substance he almost died from the following week right before a doctor's son was to pick him up and fly him to rehab. Dude was prepping for the end. He didn't even care about the catalog he so valiantly fought WB over. Sounds more like he'd had it and was ready for the mothership.
I saw Rick everyday for a few months when he was an inmate at the California prison that I worked at (CRC). I saw him again in Hollywood after he was released while waiting in line at "The Roxy" to see reggae artist Gregory Isaacs. He walked by me pretty fast when I realized it was him and the guys at the entrance let him in before I could catch up with him. I assumed he went back stage and didn't see him again that evening.
