Richard Swanson

Richard Swanson was born in Lucas County, Iowa, in 1930 and graduated from high school in 1948. He received his draft notice in 1951, just days after he had gotten married. Richard went through training in Arkansas for only 6 weeks and was then sent to Japan to work with the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Richard spent 16 months fighting on the front line in Korea and worked to support a South Korean unit.

    How could it all be so different than it was for a Vietnam vet? Same deal. Communist north invade south. And when the troops came back they are thanked and get free trips back there. But the 15 years between 1953 and 1968 are just so much more than 15 years..or so it seems.
