Being a cockney, when I heard they'd found Richard III while digging in a car park, I naturally assumed they'd gone through a sewer. Plenty of Richards down there.

He may have been a King of England but he still has 500 years of car parking fees to pay!…

Isn't it amazing how everything came together? Not only there was an amazingly determined person, not only was it strangely easy and fast to find, but also if they had tried to do this 30 years later, there wouldn't have been any more descendant to provide the DNA to identify the remains. And in the same time, they found the perfect body double of Richard (in a time where people with such important scoliosis undergo operation), who is passionate about historical reenacting and passes many weekend on the field of Bosworth!... It was really as if Richard III decided he wanted to be found, in the best and perfect time

Well observed there! And an uncanny extra touch of synchronicity with it too. The body itself was lying beneath an enclosed car park space marked with the large letter 'R'! If you had written this up as a fictional story, no one would have even begun to believe it as being credible.

@@violetlove5841 Wendy doesn't have children, neither does Michael's sister. In a conference I watched, they explained that they didn't find other descendants of the female line. It's not easy to find uninterrupted female lines. I'm sorry I don't remember how the video was called, but it was a conference given by the scientist that analysed Richard's DNA

Scoliosis contracts the torax so that often people have trouble breathing. This man had an advanced form of scoliosis, yet he rode, trained, fought, charged armies, all the while wearing armor. He was a true badass. People of the past were tough indeed. Also, if that detail was true, other things may be true also. I don't believe in monster Richard or in angel Richard. He was a medieval prince and they were ruthless in politics and war. They had to be. Richard was a man of his time, a warrior who would not flinch at bloodshed, neither better nor worse than other medieval and Renaissance rulers. More fascinating than most, of course.

Dominic Smee who has the same degree of scoliosis said that the armor and the design of his saddle helped support his spine when riding a horse. Perhaps battle is where Richard felt most comfortable.

Philippa Langley led the search for Richard III in a council car park in Leicester through her original Looking For Richard Project. Philippa conceived, facilitated and commissioned this unique historical investigation. Following seven and a half years of enquiry, she identified the likely location of the church and grave, instructing exhumation of the human remains uncovered in that exact location. Her project marked the first-ever search for the lost grave of an anointed King of England. She is President of the Scottish Branch of the Richard III Society and in 2015 was awarded Membership of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Whatever else, I love Philippa for her humanity, her vision, her passion and her spontainaeity - and for bringing that to her projects as a driving force and a source of motivation and inspiration. People would do well to learn from her in that, instead of being cynical and judgemental. If I were her, making the discovery of the century, knowing this would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and probably the proudest moment of my life, I wouldn't worry about being a bit more authentic, melodramatic and uninhibited than I usually was, or about peoples' opinions of that, or the cameras etc.

I agree 100%. When she saw with her own eyes the unmistakable evidence that he had a curved spine, she was struck but she kept going and accepted it like a champion. There is no question that he wanted to be found and she was the lady to do it, well done Phillippa - a true champion.

Philippa Langley's humbleness is as impressive as her passion, not only for history, but for her desire to correct an injustice against a human being, no matter that he died 500 years ago; this lady really, really made an enormous impression on me, I which most people would have a 100th of her passion and involvement for the work they do. This was a most fascinating documentary.

Obviously in hindsight we know covering the box of bones with the royal standard was a great gesture, but I do understand the osteologist’s refusal and hesitance to allow it given the then uncertainty. It would have been very embarrassing and as she said, inappropriate, to have done that and it wasn’t even him. Lucky it worked out. This story is absolutely crazy, it’s so cool.

But the osteologist wasn't paying for the dig, she was just one of the many who had been hired by Philippa Langley to do a job of work. Her opinion as to whether or not the remains of Richard shold be covered by a Royal Standard are irrelevant.

Perhaps if the osteologist had considered the possibility that Philippa COULD be correct and it may be Richard III - who was purported to have a curved spine - then maybe she would have anticipated the unaligned skull and not put a pick axe in it!

27:53 - What a surreal moment that was - watching a cardboard box containing Richard III's remains being draped in a royal standard and then squashed into the back of a van next to a Marks & Spencer's carrier bag! Funny old world, isn't it.

This documentary is amazing plus the narrator, Simon, taught me more about history as a child than school

I always thought that channel 4 didn't hold much hope in finding Richard so they gave the job to Simon rather than someone more established. It worked out well regardless, he was great with Phillipa

The comments are nearly as entertaining as the doc itself. Ms Langley is quite clearly emotionally invested and I can see why some may find her OTT, but if it hadn't been for her obvious obsessive nature, he'd still be under the tarmac in Leicester. As for the osteologist not wanting to get involved in draping Richard's standard over the box, she is a dispassionate scientist and should be expected to establish the facts first. Besides, he got a proper funeral in the end.

Congratulations Philippa, this was a wonderful history-making discovery. I think the truth about Richard may be somewhere in the middle. It is possible that Richard was both a wonderful ruler and prince and man who did dastardly things to supercede the Woodvilles to ultimate influence, including killing off prominent Woodvilles and disappearing his nephews who were loyal to their mother's family. Also, his deformity was real and significant but did not appear to constrain his physical prowess through Richard's sheer force of will and commitment to military training, perhaps with great pain. I'm happy he's been found and history given a more complete picture

I actually thought of this notion a month or so back and it sent me into a bit of an exestential crisis. Why is time now? why do I exist now? Why is it not 100 years in the future or past? I managed to drag myself out of it but man, don't dwell on those thoughts too much .

20:08 When Philippa is told that the skeleton they found had a "hunchback", literally her jaw dropped.

Simply the most interesting and incredible story I have ever witnessed. How she knew to dig on the car park where the letter R was painted, that was a connection.

The skeleton was already badly damaged. It was clear that he was dumped in , not in a coffin, but crouched . He wasn't very well liked.

I've read about and on one occasion spoke to British amateur archaeologists who have had nothing but roadblocks from the British archaeological society in terms of presenting a theory together with evidence contradicting established history. It's odd but it made sense to me seeing how strongly that Dutch member of the Richard the third society reacted when Simon confirmed the skeleton had a curved spine, people don't like it when you contradict their beliefs and I would have thought that counts double when you're supposed to be the leading authority on a subject so I'm so pleased Phillipa got this done in just one dig. It makes me wonder how many more lost kings of ancient Britain going back hundreds more years are still buried somewhere as unremarkable as a car park just waiting to be found

There are quite a few ancient British monarchs buried across the land. There are quite a few in Scotland and there are a number just in the new forest.

Now, for me, this is what brings out the best of the internet. Absolutely fascinating and absorbing. Well done to all.

Philippa's recent doc about the two princes is further evidence that we cannot believe so much that is told to us down through the ages, so much can be distorted. Well done to Phillipa and the team involved in both investigations!

My cousin has scoliosis very similar to this. She has a sideward curve and a small "hunch". But it really isn't very visible, she mostly just looks like she has bad posture and one of her shoulders is higher than the other and you can't really see it. If in today's fashion her curve isn't very visible i could just imagine that back at the end of plantagenet England with the amount of clothes that they wore it proberly would have been barely visible.

This is a great doc! I've watched it a few times now and initially I hadn't much interest or intrigue for King Richard III but after watching this the first time I couldn't help but be affected with enthusiasm for him! They're a great team working together to search and investigate and it's very inspiring indeed!

Cant help wondering what king Richard would say to phillipa, especially as the 'professional's historians and archaeologists probably never wouldve risked the scorn from their peers by suggesting he was where he was. Found. I so much admire how much this meant to her, even though it was clearly taking such a toll on her emotionally, an admirable person.thats clear.

Amazing documentary and an amazing discovery. I can confess that, as a deeply emotional person with a strong passion for history, I too shed tears several times throughout this programme. Wow! Some connect with history emotionally and maybe the rest don't. I'm the same with battlefield sites and places where historical figures have stood, etc. Thank you for this fascinating upload... that I have watched twice now! 😊

Yup. I’m pretty sure the Olympic gold swimmer Micheal Phelps has the same disease and it’s not hindered him at all. People over exaggerate things and a lot of it comes from the Tudor propaganda at the time and not an ounce of research.

Well done the whole team! You will all go down in history. I really had a hearty laugh when that piece of iron in Richard´s spine turned out to be a random Roman nail that happened to be lying in the soil. Just too hilarious! 🤭And yes - I do believe Richard III wanted to be found by the passionate and determined Philippa. It was time for him to be found, because by the odds standing 1: a million, this was no longer just the luck of archeologists. That parking space was so small! I remember when the news struck the world and also the subsequent regal burrial, but I never went into more depth of this whole archeological miracle. Sooo glad is has been saved for posterity!

This is one of the most intriguing cases and spooky. Everything always goes right. Even follow up research goes startlingly smoothly. Maybe King Richard’s spirit couldn’t rest.

What an exciting story, I love this documentary!

The space he was found under was reserved for the county coroner. So there was a joke going around at the time that. The Globe Theatre was going to have to change the famous line *"A horse! A horse! My Kingdom for a horse!"* to *"A hearse! A hearse! My Kingdom for a hearse!"* 🤣

How fascinating to watch how they piece together the puzzle to know if the skeleton belonged to King Richard 111. What great teamwork of dedication and respect. I loved this film.

In August 2012, 527 years to the day that King Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth, Leicester City Council, the University of Leicester, and the Richard III Society began the archaeological dig for the 'Looking for Richard' project, a search underneath a car park in Leicester, to find King Richard III.

I can't see any comments on it, but re armour. There's another documentary where they find a kid with the same scoliosis as Richard's remains. And they build him an armour, and he finds it quite comfortable. Remember armours were built for one person an done only, and blacksmiths were not like today self taught, but had a whole line of experts passing on knowledge. And end point, armour rests on the hips, not the shoulders, just like heavy skirts and modern heavy backpacks. So Richard could absolutely have been in battle with armour on, like they doubt he could have at around minute 22-23.

It's amazing to see how he probably must have looked like... wish they'd do that with other monarchs as well like Mary Queen of Scots, Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth of York, Elizabeth I, Henry VII and VIII and so on!

I would really have loved to see what Anne Boelyn actually looked like because the potrait of her that we have was done some years after her execusion and some have said that she actually wasn't beautiful so i would really have liked to she what she looked like.

I listen to a podcast recently where a guy who does this modelling work for the police actually said they don’t put THE face to the person, they put A face to the person and there are many variables that they cannot account for which could distort the final image. So it’s only a rough similarity at best and a painting (if the subject had sat for it) could be a far more accurate likeness, and there’s plenty of paintings of old monarchs to look at.

I live in Leicester, the car park was about 15 min away from my house.

What a fantastic find for England.

@@richardevppro3980 Your dad was, of course, correct, particularly if he knew the history of the site. Reports of the time stated that Richard was interred at Greyfriars in Leicester. The original church was, of course, a victim of the Dissolution. The "Ricardians" achievement was in raising the funds to finance the excavation.

The claim to fame of the woman digging is to have broken Richard the III's skull. I wouldn't put that in my CV

The last part where they bring his reconstructed face is so weird, a man dug from a parking lot hundreds of years on a hunch has his face reconstructed and voila Richard the 3rd. Phillipa luckiest woman in the world

Phillipa's commitment was admirable. However, I believe her "Ricardian" zeal seriously clouds her judgement. "Is this the face of a tyrant?" What does a tyrant look like ? I've seen photographs of many confirmed tyrants. None of them had horns and a forked tail. Also, you could see Phillipa was absolutely devastated when the skeleton proved that "Richard crookback" wasn't simply the creation of Tudor propaganda and William Shakespeare.

What an amazing documentary. The face reveal was goosebump.

Interesting that Richard III's grandfather was Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York. Richard's recent discovery was largely due to the efforts of Philippa Langley. Typically, the academic fraternity - very late-comers to the Search for Richard III - managed to hog the limelight once he was located, leaving Philippa Langley on the sidelines.

True, but that's mainly because we know where all the ruling. Kings & Queens of England from William the Conquer to Elizabeth II are buried.

This was so intriguing lm blown away with Philippa’s determination and knowledge of history and her skill at getting to the truth and what really happened , just brilliant how everything came together she had a gut feeling and she was right well done Philippa

Yes, indeed. And how small-minded and unprofessional of Jo to refuse when she was offered the honour. I hope she suffered some embarrassment when the body was identified - but she's probably too arrogant to recognise what a fool she made of herself.

@@ljo642 I disagree, at that point, it was only conjectured that it was him. She was there to do her job, and while a big moment, it would have been more of an embarrassment to have placed the standard over the wrong body - She was perfectly within her rights to refuse and did not hold the sentimentality that Philippa does. While a great moment in history, i do not think she should be admonished for refusing.

@@ashleighdowner1897 exactly, she was playing it safe. I think Philippa would have been very mortified if it turned out it was just a monk she covered with that flag instead of Richard.

@@teenelf Exactly, and Jo is a professional when all the evidence pointed towards it being him, she proudly stated that fact, but not before. Leicester universities threw their best talents at this project, I highly doubt she was in any way reprimanded for being professional and not bringing emotions into her quite serious work.

Indeed, it was a lovely idea and gesture.

All of this could have been avoided if that map maker John speed would have gone to the right place and been more thorough in the first place. Made to look a right mug. Also there was a real atmosphere between the scientists and historians at first !

​@@Tawadeb They had to take over because they were the *ONLY* people who could prove it was Richard III. If they hadn't then people could legitimately say it wasn’t him.

Abaolutely love that Simon Farnaby is the host. As soon as I flipped this on I immediately yelled "SIMON!?"

Anyone who blame Richard as a tyrant and a monster should ask himself in wich ways he would be a ruler in medieval ? That was no comfortable job !

Wow that was amazing

It's funny the number of people who said, before his identity was confirmed, that Richard III couldn't have had a hunchback because how could he have worn the armour? As if a king couldn't have had armour custom made for him! The thing is about propaganda, that it always starts with a grain of truth then the lies are spread out from there. So he was a hunchback but that didn't necessarily make him a bad man.

Yes, exactly the thing I thought and was about to comment about. Just thought I'd do a search before commenting the exact same thing. ;-) People are way to fixated on the "standard" armour, but as a king he most certainly wouldn't have been going to the local blacksmith and just select some pre-made random piece of armour from the shelf, he would most certainly have had armour specifically tailored for him. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure even "normal" kings would have had armour made specifically for them, regardless of their body shape or any deformities.

No, he wasn’t a hunchback. He had scoliosis so his spine bent sideways, not upwards. That’s why he could wear armour. There’s another Richard III documentary showing this exact thing.

@@misophoniq All armour was 'Made to Measure' which is why it was so expensive and worn only by the Richest of the Rich.

Imagine bringing a Tudor today, and show him that Richard III have been laid to rest as a king, and all their propaganda has been laid to ruin

So i didn't know about how he was found as i am not english and had to watch the hole show even though i have only slept 3 hours last night. It is so fascinating and well done. Thank you. Also went and watch the actual burial's video after this 😅

Even today it is said that he will return, as if traveling through time, through the fog on a foggy morning. His death, still young at 24 years old and without successor led to Portugal being ruled by Spain until December 1st 1640 when independence was re-established in a military uprising with the support of the people, that day being a national holiday.

There's another documentary where they show that his curvature wouldn't have been obvious unless he was unclothed

This is a well made and highly informative documentary plus its simply a great story. I loved it.

Well done Philippa....you believed and you did the research and followed your hunch....(no pun intended) and I agree with the feelings you had over the letter R parking space. Why not? He would have felt aggrieved at being left under a car park rather than a Kings place of resting. You did well!

I have a very strong theory that it was actually that particular blow to the head that really killed him.

I feel weird whenever I see a concert or a coffee shop full of patrons on TV.

About the flag draping thing... I think these are actions of someone who didn't know what to do or what protocols to follow when finding the remains of a King. Despite the lack of DNA proof... The works were: buried under the choir of the church, the spinal deformity, the head trauma... Sometimes - if not most if the time - an Archaeologist's greatest asset, next to an arsenal of knowledge is instinct. She Philippa certainly has that. She's so lucky!!

I agree, I love her passion and am she deserves her name in the history books. The other archaeologist was right on questioning the flag idea as it wasn’t confirmed to be the king in that moment and it could have been someone who despised what that flag stood for making it inappropriate. I’m glad she did it though as her first instinct was correct

Given how he was treated after the battle, it seemed the right thing to do.

Just watched the movie 'The Lost King' based on this story. Trust your gut, be persistent is the message!

My favourite Richard III Shakespear is Ian McKelland one amazingly different way I love different depictions.
