Richard Dawkins: Why are there still Chimpanzees? - Nebraska Vignettes #2

Ғылым және технология

Richard Dawkins clears up the misunderstanding of Evolution that is all too common: If we descended from Chimpanzees, then why are there still Chimpanzees? Dawkins explains that we DID NOT descend from Chimpanzees-we both share a common ancestor.

During Richard Dawkins' 2009 American tour, we visited Judy Diamond's "Explore Evolution" exhibit at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln. This exhibit has now been replicated in six museums around the country. While visiting we filmed a collection of short unrehearsed and unscripted videos-just inspired by the "Explore Evolution" exhibit.

robert punu That was taken from a video that was promoting helping the environment and trying to lower trash production. He was using "closed system" as in "our trash won't be leaving Earth", which is debatable but it's still important to produce as little waste as possible. Geocentrism still has a lot to explain, like how we can launch probes to Saturn which apparently moves at 1/3 the speed of sound and how the Coriolis effect works. The second law of thermodynamics states that any closed system will move towards a state of entropy over time, so I think the argument you're trying to put forth is that evolution should be pushing towards simpler organisms and thus complex things couldn't arise from it? Which is false to anyone who has read the wikipedia page about evolution as selective pressures exist. I don't know what this has to do with that Bill Nye clip though, could you explain what you meant by your argument?

then you are stooo-pid. Richard Dawkins teaches the universe came from "literally nothing." Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't get anything from "literally nothing." We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. I ultimately decided that it doesn't matter because either way I should take their statements at face value. If they are cynical manipulators and I take them at face value, then history will remember them as morons. If they believe what they say and I take them at face value, then, well, that's the more sensible and respectful approach to take. Dear Professor Dawkins, As an ex-christian I am so grateful that I got to know your work (thanks to Floor Jansen & Nightwish for that). I have learned and am still learning so much from you. As a child growing up in a very conservative Christian community in the Netherlands, I was taught nothing about evolution, except all those false and misguiding one-liners that you dismantle one by one, just like in this video. I am reading your book 'The greatest show on Earth' now (just finished the chapter about the not-missing link) and I love it. Apart from all the knowledge you bestow upon us, I also feel truly inspired by the words you spoke at the show of Nightwish. After I quit my faith (I didn't lose it, I quit) I had a very hard time finding a purpose in life, but also in finding comfort during times of hardship (which being brought up in this religious dogmas was the main cause for). You have offered me both and I am forever grateful. Your work will always live on, you have brought the world so much. Thank you so much. 💚💚💚Kind regards from the Netherlands 💚💚💚

Wow, now you're a dunce like Dawkins. How sweet. God is the reason for us and all we have. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJ2B09yHj7y5iLg.html “However improbable the origin of life might be, we know it happened on Earth because we are here.” -Richard Dawkins. Which is EXACTLY what I'm saying. We've had to spend thousands of years improving technology just to make up for our natural deficiencies (from no humble beginnings, either -- we've spent thousands of years suffering and dying before any technological advancement took place). It's an absolute miracle we were even able to survive in ancient Africa at all. This is very clearly not a planet which had humans in mind. This couldn't even be considered the rough draft of a perfect designer.

The point is that humans were certainly not cursed by evolution in our physical structure, rather the opposite

AS a matter of fact, the earliest hominid fossils come from the great rift valley of Africa. which is split in half by a massive mountain range. Today one side of that range is covered in tropical forest, and the other side is open Savannah (plains, grasslands, etc) fossils of plants and animals show that at one time those mountains didn't exist, and that the entire region was tropical forest. Continental drift caused the mountain range to form, effectively cutting off most of the rain to one side. that side became grassland as the forest died out. and any animals who couldn't adapt died out too. the earliest human ancestors appear on the Savannah side of the mountains, while chimpanzees and gorillas survive on the forest side. one of the first human traits to evolve was walking and standing upright. in a world with long grass, very few trees, and lots of large predators like lions, leopards, hyena, and prehistoric species like Dinofelis. being able to spot them early and from a safe distance would have been a huge advantage. humans are the result of evolution due to environmental change, they had to adapt to a completely alien habitat with new dangers, and opportunities their forest dwelling relatives never had to deal with. it was pressure and competition to change that shaped human kind. and like any species we branched out into several species. but only one still survives today.

EVOLUTION IS BULLSHIT AND ALWAYS WILL BE. LET'S TAKE A BIRD AS AN EXAMPLE. BIRDS HAVING THE ADVANCED DESIGN OF WINGS ENABLE THE SPECIES TO FLY HIGH UP INTO THE TREES SAFE FROM PREDITORS. IT ALSO USES THE SHELTER OF THE TREES TO REPRODUCE SO THE SPECIES SUSTAINS ITSELF. IF BIRD HAD TO WAIT MILLIONS OF YEARS AS EVOLUTION SUGGESTS TO DEVELOP THE ADVANCE DESIGNS OF WINGS. BIRD WOULD HAVE GONE EXTINCT AND BECAME A THANKSGIVING DAY TURKEY FOR THE ANTS. BIRDS HAD TO HAVE THE ADVANCED DESIGNS FROM THE BEGINING WHICH ALSO ANSWERS THE QUESTION WHICH CAME FIRST THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG. OBVIOUSLY A CREATOR WAS INVOLVED. SECONDLY WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE FOOD CHAIN IN NATURE, IT IS PREDATORY. SINCE CHARLES DARWIN STATES THAT EVERYTHING EVOLVED FROM A COMMEN ORIGIN WOULD ONLY MEAN LIFE WOULD HAVE EATEN ITSELF INTO EXTINCTION FROM THE START. HOW DID THEY EVOLVE FROM EACH OTHER AND THEN FOR A SPECIES TO SURVIVE IT EATS THE ONES IT EVOLVED FROM. GIVE ME A BREAK AND I'M NOT TAKING ABOUT MY BALLS. THIS ALSO MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR EVOLUTION TO EVER HAVE TAKEN PLACE. LETS PUT GOD INTO A SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVE. GOD IS A FORCE OF PURE ENERGY THAT EXPANDS THE INFINITE UNIVERSE, AND HE IS ALSO THE GOD OF THE BIBLE PERIOD.

If you wanted to include all the now-extinct species the graphic would need to be enormous. By simplifying it down to a demonstration of how SURVIVING species are related, we are given a relatively easy to comprehend family tree. Toss in all the ones that didn't make it and it would be a confusing spider web of irrelevance. If you want completeness, go to a university, not a one minute KZread explanation.

Slipp3ryslop3 the absurdity here is, that when you bring ALL he evidence in every single little step we actually know, plus all the extinct side branches of our ancestral line... the creationists tunes out, they cannot process it (the honest ones, the inhonest just claim you make things up and you are a servant of satan). But if you only bring some few examples to show the tendencies they claim there are so much missing links thatwe cannot be sure. And considering how often we thought some early humanoid was our ancestor which then came out to be a cousin, or in the case of the neanderthal human, were a cousin with whome some of our grannies had sex with, and he thus is a cousin who is also an ancestor to some of us (and no, low intelligence is not the heritage, it is an adaptation to various infections of european continent, together with a tendency to larger muscle groth and denser bones, a overall bigger more muscular body and maybe also a tendency to have more and longer body hair). They rightfully say so. Or better said... they would be right if those evidences picked to craft an overall picture were the only actual existing ones.

The common misunderstanding reveals that people have a false intuition about evolution (maybe caused by that diagram of "improvement" from small ape to big man) that it's function is to "improve" a species to a "higher" form. No. Selection makes an animal better suited to its environment, it offers no promises that there's an ultimate goal of "fully evolved" (human) that is a human conceit, our imagined self importance.

What's interesting is the human belief that we're above all other animals. Of course this belief was passed down in religious teaching, the idea that we were entrusted by God to be a steward over other animals. But of course, we are just animals ourselves. It's hard for human beings to accept that. Perhaps because if we admit our animal nature too much, society might become more animalistic and less civil. But anyway, we are animals, of course.

what this video does not show you is the wealth of transitional fossils between the common ancestor and modern humans, so many that in between some established fossil species are fossils who's placement we still can't decide because it's micro differences put it inbetween already established fossils (ref. sima de los heusos humans, homo rhodensis, homo ergastor). homo naledi was an exciting find that has human skull features with small 'ape like' primitive cranium and a more australopithicine like body in some respects. then there are australopithicines, kenyanthropus and ardipithicus all with a collection of features more like that of homo genus than the pan genus. Please research these fossils before deciding that there are no "missing links" between us and our fellow ape cousins.

I READ THESE POSTS AND THE STUPIDITY YOU ATHEISTS DISPLAY IS ASTOUNDING. I JUST HOPE YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT SITTING ON A JURY AT MY TRIAL WHEN I AM FIGHTING FOR MY INNOCENTS.

Hate to tell you but most Christians are not even Christians. Nevertheless this video, and it's total speculation about a "unknown common ancestor?" And the one where Dawkins says "we may have been intelligently designed Aliens but they would have come from a planet where they evolved through a Darwinist process" speaks volumes of prejudice, not science, but scientism.. Darwin's finches were always finches, before he saw them, and will continue to be finches, unless they go extinct no matter how much their beaks change. People talk about needing to believe in evolution, single cell, to worm, to fish, to common ancestor, to man as essential to understand things like germ theory. Really? while bacteria, and viruses, can develop resistance to antibiotics, and attempts to eradicate them, they remain, what they always were, and will be germs. Variation within a species does not prove macro evolution. Otherwise germs would have evolved into something completely different long ago. But on the other hand politicians may prove an exception?
