Richard Dawkins: Saddles and Domes: Evolution of the Giant Tortoises

Ғылым және технология

Richard Dawkins explains how and why the Giant Tortoises of Galapagos evolved on each of the different islands. He shows how the different shell shapes evolved to help the tortoises adapt to environments on the different islands.

"In May 2007 Josh and I were among those who went to Galapagos with a large group from the Center for Inquiry. As we walked with the guided parties over the islands, Josh took every opportunity to film the wildlife. Occasionally he would turn the camera on me, and I would ad lib a few words about whatever animals we were looking at. These 'vignettes' were unscripted and unrehearsed, and there was no time for any "Take 2" repetitions, because the guided walk was moving on."

The problem with being too specific, is that people will think that the theory covers that, and that alone; when in fact it is quite a broad theory that explains an extraordinarily vast amount of observations.

@iwalrus11 you right in saying WHY he said that...but in many, many, many university biology courses....there is an invisible line between 'evolve to suit the environment' and 'adapting to a suitable niche' The basis that explains both in conjunction: mutations in a gene are what cause changes in an animal (evolution), and whatever the change, as a result of chance....will allow those animals to thrive in a particular environment (niche) that suits them (adaptation). I hope I've explained it?

The whole point of a theory is to find an underlying mechanism that binds all the facts together. A theory isn't something that might or might not be true. It is something that explains the facts. As for knowning what I am talking about, I do have a PhD in Physics.

See the one he did on the iguanas - very similar freak accidents have been recorded happening and being observed. It is convenient, yes. It's also just what you'd expect if you approached it from the angle that they diverged from a common ancestor over time and location.

Gravity (the theory) explains the observed attraction in objects (the fact). However, since since we don't have a fancy word for the observed evolution (gradual chance over time), we call it "Theory of evolution". By contrast, the theory of gravity could just as well be called "Theory of objects attracting each other". So they are similar, but not the same.

If evolution is a blind, unintelligent and an uncontrolled force, then, how does it know about survival of species? How does it coordinate natural selection? My experience in this world has taught me that selection is done by the mind. Also random forces like tornados and so on are destructive, they don't cause a new phenomenon that brings constructive end products but the mind does.

  • @xxxxxxcx156

It doesn't know anything because evolution is not a living being, it doesn't coordinate natural selection. The new mutations that don't "work out" and don't help the animal or plant to adapt and reproduce just die, that's why we see the illusion of everything being so "perfect" but the fact is that millions of species have gone extinct without human help just because they didn't adapt fast enough thats evolution

There is no "attempt" to enter another environment. But by some mutation, one of your water beings is able to crawl out a bit further, were no enemies are. This gives it a higher chance of survival, more offsprings. Other mutations of the offspring follow that lead back to the water or further up unto the shore. For a conscious being, not land-life would have been necessary, a giant intelligent squid would have been nice too, including a squid on the cross maybe...

Survival of the best adapted, not fittest, that is a mistake in the early debates on evolution. There are many reasons to have a small mobility advantage, it is not only to avoid predators, but also to reach more food or a good nesting place. It is all about gradual change, that sometimes, very occasionally, leads to amazing changes. More than one kind of animal flies, birds evolved appropriate feathers. A slaughter can speed up change, as only a few exceptional animals survive to reproduce.

"A species is defined as something that can produce fertile offspring with its own species" This is a working definition, but not the motivation behind the concept of species. This concept is about grouping speciments that have a certain degree of similarity. The fertile offspring criteria can't be used with fossiles, for instance.

Sometimes I wonder why bother, Dr. Dawkins, let them think whatever they want to believe? However, he cares about what he does because he is a true scientist and he wants to be real.
