What I love about this horse and this race, is that 99% of the people did not pick this 80 to 1 long shot, most people did not win money on Rich Strike, yet we all still love the fact that Rich Strike won this race, and it was the greatest race we ever saw. On top of that, once we learn all the facts of this truly epic story, it does not matter how invested we were initially. We fall in love with the horse, his owner, the jockey, the whole team, and the story of literally over coming ALL the odds stacked against them. The owner had a tragic barn fire 2 yrs ago, Rich Strike was purchased for $30,000, originally Rich Strike was not even supposed to be in the race, he was a last-minute fill-in for a scratched horse. Rich Strike was a 80 to 1 long shot, which made this one of the biggest upsets in Derby history. In the first few seconds of the race Rich Strike was last, at one point in the race it did not look like Rich Strike was going to be able to make it through the huge pack ahead of him. Against all odds, literally all odds, this horse ran down the entire field and won the Kentucky Derby. That will give a lot of people hope for themselves and others, and for what we are going through in life. So even though millions of people did not win a dime on Rich Strike, we still love the fact that Rich Strike and the entire team won. This literally was the greatest horse race ever. God what you did for Rich Strike and his whole team, please do for America.

I am a Japanese horse racing fan. I was watching this Kentucky Derby because a Japanese horse, Crown Pride, was running in this race, and I received the "first strike" when I saw Rich Strike win from those odds. I also get a "second strike" when I check his pedigree list. It says "Keen Ice" as his father. I like American Pharoah, I've seen him race many times, and I like his sires running in Japan (I love Cafe Pharoah among others, check out "2022 February Stakes" if you don't know him). Watching American Pharoah race also means watching that Travers Stakes, the only one he lost, so of course I remember Keen Ice overtaking him and beating him. So when his name came up as the father of Rich Strike, I was very happy. He could have been a stallion. And that his child could have the glory of winning the Kentucky Derby. It was nice to see the staff who worked so hard to help him win like this, and to see Rich Strike looking so cute, tongue out and a little restless. Thank you so much for putting up these videos. There may be a Japanese horse running in this year's Kentucky Derby as well, so I hope you will all give him a little cheer when he does. (Sorry, this is an automatic translation, so it may be hard to get the message across...)

Yes, I remember Crown Pride. He was close to the front the whole race! I think he was 17-1 odds. Remember, both Rich Strike and Keen Ice came from Hall of Fame horse, Curlin! He is Rich Strike's Grandfather! I will definitely remember this comment and give any horse from Japan a good cheer in the derby! Big credit to jockey who handle rich strike. He managed and measured perfectly the distance even though he was in traffic position. He maneuvered rich strike in the nic of time. What a beautiful story

When Rich Strike started running past the other horses on the stretch that was the most amazing thing I have ever seen in horse racing since Secretariat. I wonder how fast he was running at that point.. He was so far back and he literally ran by the other horses like they weren't running full speed. He was in a completely different league at that point.

@@agustindejesus7398 15 lengths, that doesn't sound right. Cyberknife finished 2nd, Zandon finished 3rd. RS finished 4th only losing by a neck with all of those horses. All 3 of those horse got a 105 speed rating and points. So you are saying Epicenter beat Zanden by 15 lengths. Explain that...

New to horse racing but noticed the bond immediately between RIch Strike and Jerry Dixon, Jr.. Congrats.

I raised horses for years. When I saw Rich Strike sticking his tongue out at the first of the video, I could tell that he was bored. That's called a vice brought on by not enough stimulation. He is an extremely intelligent animal. Something clicked in his brain in that race and it was on.

I just came back again to watch this race. If you EVER need a mood lift, people, this is the video to watch. Guaranteed goose bumps. I must have seen this video at least 20 times and I'm not done. 😅 Watch how CLEANLY Sonny guides Rich Strike thru the crowd. Richie must be a push button horse. Listens to his rider. That was such a CLEAN win. WOW. I just love this. LOVE this whole team. Who knows if Rich Strike will win again BUT the Kentucky Derby is America's big race. Every trainer wants to win the KY Derby. Richie did it. BAM! That just put alot of stars on his resume. I love when Richie grabs the pony horses right rein and is shaking his head around and the pony rider is trying to get the rein back.🤪 LOL Richie's saying, "hey, who are you. @@Kid_Chocolate Well, Ritchie didn't take the win BUT man, he still impressed alot of people. He left Hot Rod Charlie back in 6th place, maybe 7th and Ritchie shot up to take 4th!! That was good enough for me. He had just as much of a chance to win the BCC as any of the others but Flightline showed up. Figures. If it was just a bit longer, Ritchie would have taken it. He loved that track!! He ran a GREAT race. That boy has stamina. 😃

Yes his people trained him hard for two weeks even though he was only an "also eligible" horse. Meaning he had to wait for another horse to drop out before he could run

Omg - yes I had one of those days - talking to God saying “ all my life I wanted a horse ( 5 year memories) praying - then I said Well , I am 67 and prayer didn’t happen- then I turn on the TV - then boom 💥 lighting strike was Rich Strike -,the son of Keen Ice

This video/race is more than inspiring. I have viewed it dozens of times; and chill bumps still cover my arms when I watch Rich Strike as he flies by fifteen horses. WOW!!! Remember Jerry prayed with Rich b/4 the race, and Sonny Leon, the jockey, raised his finger to the sky. I think they all were praying, including Rich.

This race is thrilling and moving every time I watch it. I've seen every Derby for decades and this fairytale and incredible ride through the field to the wire tops them all. Rich Strike and his story illustrates all the best things about Thoroughbreds and racing. He certainly rose to the occasion!

And Jerry had a big connection with God, and it looked like the horse was praying with him.

A lot of the credit goes to the jockey how he weaved that horse thru the leading pack at the speed was amazing. I thought the Kentucky Derby would have the best working there the rider of the pony horse should never be near that race unless she is in the stands. Notice when the groom came out it clamed down right away.

I'm not sure what u mean by the rider of the pony horse should be in the stands, the jockey should be training with the horse b/4 the race I would think. If ur talking about Rich nipping at the guide horse, he was just saying "I should have had 19 more like U out there, I would have smeared U all over the track."

As Rich Strike was passing @ 0:30 I immediately thought, wow he is absolutely beautiful, majestic. For me in any sport, It is always heartwarming, exciting and such a good feeling when an underdog, one on nobody’s radar, that no one believed in, that no one had faith in, or was not worth even focusing on, and that underdog steps out and comes out on top upsetting and shocking everyone. As if to say to all the doubters, “I didn’t care that you didn’t believe in me.” I believed. Congratulations Rich Strike! And to the jockey, Sonny Leon, being his first time in the KD himself great job, well done.

I've watched this race at least a 100 times and I still cry when I see it. When I need motivation I watch Richie's amazing victory. My favorite race of all times.

I may be close to 35x watching Rich Strike and Sonny Leon. I get a tingling good feeling and my coworkers are trying to understand why am I watching horse racing? By far, the best video on the internet about this event. The horse and team should be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Definitely the sports story of the year that rivals the 1980 US hockey team. Love the music and great job putting all the videos together.

What an Amazing inspirational Journey for all the People involved and especially for those of us who are Horse lovers, and appreciate how exquisite and magnificent these animals truly are, to be able to witness these Phenomenal athletic abilities and incredibly gifted displays of competitive skills is breathtaking, the long hours and challenges, patience and dedication that it takes, it is also a heartbreaking business as well😢 but the animals are just so mind blowingly Phenomenal whether they win or not...to watch them is pure Magic...🎉 I was one of the lucky ones fortunate enough to get to work with them in my youth behind the scenes on the track, and I actually did bet on "Mine that Bird" I have always had a sweet spot for the long shots❤ Pray for their safety first always 🙏

grooms are the closest one to the horse.The one who takes care of his needs is the one the horse bonds with. I love this video. I'm going to wear it out re playing it so many times. What a great horse because he has a great team who really loves him. 🥰

Yes! Would love to know how much of that winning maneuver was RS, and how much was Sonny. Because it was so smoothly executed, it didn't seem like Sonny had to 'ask' him for it, he simply 'wanted' it more than the others. Then, I was irked that Sonny's foul cost Richie the win over 4-y.o. Hot Rod Charlie in the Lukas Classic.

This has to be one of the greatest stretch runs in the history of racing. Rich Strike's speed coming around the far turn and into the finish line was exceptional. Horse turned on the after burners!

This was the first horse race that i have ever watched (and probably the last as it can't happen again at least in the next 20 years) because it is not popular in India. I can say that i could've missed a great kind of emotional moment but i am happy that i clicked on it.

I have raced quarter horses since 2005. In 2007 was when i had the fastest horse i have owned to date and even then i had no luck in big money races. Horse racing industry is very difficult. I get excited when my horses win a regular claiming race, i cant imagine what the owner of rich strike was feeling. No matter what they say about rich strike one thing is certain he won the kentucky derby! Once in a lifetime moment. God bless you all!

Thanks for taking the time to make these comments. I haven't made any videos lately because I've been very down. Thanks for reminding me that some of my work is enjoyable and helpful to many people. You cheered me up! I'm not actually a horse racing fan, I just thought Rich Strike's upset was such a once in a 100 year upset that I wanted to make a video about it. The first one got so many views, that I made 2 more Rich Strike videos. So, it was more about the amazing upset than about horse racing.

@@Kid_ChocolateI can understand that. I have some mixed feelings about “horse racing” for a lot of reasons but it’s the stories. Seabiscuit, Ruffian, Secretariat and so many others. What the horses have meant to people. Seabiscuit is one of my great heroes. A horse nobody wanted. He wasn’t pretty, nobody understood him…. He was a grandson of the mighty “Man O War” but they could barely get him to run until the right people found him and understood him and loved him. He became a hero of America during the worst part of the depression because people figured that if this horse could win, maybe they could too. Brilliant. I still think you have a heart for telling the stories…

I'm watching this in the UK and this video was one of the greatest most humble videos i have ever seen and i watched the last half mile with my mouth open as i couldnt believe it from 18th place! truly incredible and what a horse! Then after winning as he did he then wants to fight another horse and im sure as he was taking a bite of him if he could talk you would of heard 'see i told you i told you'! now get out of my way!' Great video everything about it and i really hope to see this horse run in person i really do!

How fast was Richie running that past part of the race? All the other horses were running at their peak and he just passed them like they were standing still, amazing!

His trip was close in against the rail, most of the way and so technically he didn't run as far as the other 2 horses he passed at the finish line and so he had plenty of kick left. And he's an endurance horse anyway. The whole event was the most exciting piece of sports entertainment I've ever seen in my entire life.

Thats why he got absolutely smashed in the belmont stakes next out. It was a complete fluke as the horses at the front went a ridiculous speed and couldn't get home. Thats why all the 5 outsiders who raced at the back finished in the 1st 7 within 5 lengths. Great sporting moment, but a one off

@@Lee-mo1qf Who cares if it's a one off? The "Miracle On Ice" was a one off... and it was still voted the greatest sporting event of the 20th century. Rich Strike has sold more merchandise in one month then every other horse in America combined will sell this entire year! And he never has to win another race. If you're a 2 million dollar horse that gets upset by a fast pace... maybe you really should be dog food. Rich Strike didn't seem upset by the fast pace. Either cross the line in 202:61 or go home! Maybe the big stage of the KD scared all those other horses. haha

I didn't see Secretariat live, but I've seen his races on KZread. He was a great horse, but people knew of Secretariat. He was a horse that had good odds when he raced. I agree, Rich Strike's victory was more amazing because no one saw him coming! 80-1
