Whether this guy is qualified or ready as HC or not, it is better that he got in there early and gets to put that staff together. Look what happened to the picky 49ers after getting rid of Harbaugh. They got a bottom of the barrel guy as HC and coaching staff late.

Its a job you take simply to get paid, knowing you're in a losing situation given the ownership nightmare and poor roster. That said, many have said that the Texans ownership is crap and remember a few years ago when they also got a lot of attention because they hired a GM that Deshaun Watson didn't approve, Watson was requesting a trade, and then the allegations came out about him. Yet this year, they picked up a stellar QB in the draft and look to have hit it big with DeMeco Ryans. So I guess it's possible to still win given a potentially bad ownership/management.

Canales can coach as best as he can but it comes down to what the folks that are higher than him are doing in terms of signing free agents and drafting players. I'm shocked they weren't the last team to sign a head coach since everyone says it is the least desirable team for a coach to sign with

It's not the choice I'd make. I'm personally of the mind you need an experienced coach for young developing QB's. However, Baker has a similar style to Young, and I can see Bryce having much more success in this system than in Frank Reich's. That being said, unless Tepper either sells, or has an epiphany that he should have as little involvement in football decisions as possible it'll be the same old song and dance. Good luck Panthers fans, you really will need it.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's learned what to do and what not to do. What will be critical for Canales is who he hires as OC, WR coach and OL coach. The WR and OL groups regressed badly from '22 to '23, and there was no one on staff competent enough to call plays correctly.

Dave was an impressive OC in this first year. There were rough patches, but he showed that he was capable of adapting, and taking command of the offense where the likes of Byron Leftwich showed he wasn't under the Bowles regime. That being said, I was surprised to see all of this, given how Canales seems to have a rocket accent to the role. I am unsure if this has more to do with the Panthers having a hard time finding a coach willing to work under the current ownership so they had to, with all due respect to Canales, "settle", or if they genuinely think he's the right coach to unlock Young. This just has a 'Freddie Kitchens vibe' to me. Either way, Canales had an impressive offense and it'll be interesting to see how Carolina fairs going forward.

I don't think it's that surprising. It's not like a big name coach would want to work for tepper and taking from a divisional rival sounds exactly like what he would do. Now why Canales would want to work for a lunatic like tepper instead of getting more experience as an oc and going for a head coaching job with a better run franchise in a few years, who knows. I get it's more money but it can't be worth it in this case
