RIA VR80 Review (Turkish AR-Style Shotgun)

Ғылым және технология

Rock Island Armory is importing Turkish AR Shotguns and labeling them as the VR80. I've seen many positive reviews on this gun and I'm here to speak on the relative opposite side of that opinion. The shotgun runs fine, depending on what you feed it. The shotgun is machine well, too well, if you watch the review, you will smell what I'm stepping in. Make sure you clean it totally and remove all factory oil before first shooting session and file down the rough burrs on the magazines before firing. Makes a world of difference!!!!! And fire 1300 and above fps rounds, mainly slugs are preferred for the break in!!!!!

🤔Why even bother shooting "light foot lbs loads" "low brass" "birdshot" etc etc........ The VR80 is a self defense/combat semi-auto box fed shotgun, treat it as such. It is not a platform for "bird hunting". 💪🏽Break it in properly (+1200 fps, high brass, buckshot, slugs) also keep it well oiled and constantly work the buffer spring and bolt carrier group. Then it will run like a 💋hooker at a 🙏🏼baptist revival. Mine surely does. Great field review Hippie Gunner good job sir. QUOTE - "People don't need to be John Wick they need to be Clint Smith" and "Fear an old man in a profession where men die young" "Shall Not Be Infringed" 🇺🇲Stay well. Go in peace.

Good review Hippie!! I've watched a few now on the VR-80 . I do love mine and there are a couple things that may need tuning granted . "spring" and "mags" but after this machine is "broke in" its a monster and worth it $$. It will cycle low- brass eventually but it def loves the hi-brass no doubt. Just got my 20 rd drum today "MKA 1919 Pro Mag." much better than the 19 rd mag.. i just wrapped the Mlock shroud a little with some camo cloth tape and it helps!. Hell just wearing Good tac gloves with this monster should be a requirement and will take care of the BOO-BOO issues hahaha.. Liked your style on your review of this weapon so i had to sub !!!

I like your honesty and going over the good & not-so-good points on the RIA VR-80 shotgun. I just bought the RIA 20 gauge shotgun today as I already have other traditional pump shotguns. I am new to this style of shotgun and now a bit concerned with the hand-burning gas problem from the barrel and the ejection problems from using anything but the correct shells. This shotgun is primarily for my wife, so I'd hate to have her get burned, of course. I also was reminded by the gun store owner to first clean and lube the VR-20 gauge (in my case) before using it for the first time. A lesson that probably applies to all new guns, I would guess. (correct me if I am wrong on that). Thanks for a truthful run-through of this AR-style Shotgun. Lastly, the gun store said to use "Winchester" X super 20 gauge / 3 inch/ 1500 velocity/ 7/8 oz 4 shot on this new shotgun. What say you? Any comments BEFORE I go out and try to shoot this thing? We mainly use it for target and sports competitions. No hunting. Thanks, Ron

I asked RIA and Armscor about the cycling issues, and they emailed me a fairly comprehensive set of instructions on how to break it in.

Here's Armscor's break-in recommendation for the VR-80 copy-pasted directly from the documentation they sent me: ➢ Quality shotshells only ➢ Minimum 2 ¾”, 3 dram shotshell to be used ➢ Minimum velocity 1250fps ➢ Minimum 1 1/8 oz of shot ➢ Expect some malfunctions in first 25-50 rounds ➢ Minimum of 250 rounds before trying lighter load ➢ Avoid light recoil or reduced recoil loads ➢ Due to variation in ammo and firearms some guns may work with lighter loads and some may not ➢ Please complete break in period of 100 rounds with recommended loads before sending warranty claim for cycling issues ➢ KZread has several videos on customization for lighter loads however custom work may void warranty They recommend breaking-in with Winchester Super-Handicap Heavy Target Loads (12 Ga---1.75"---1250 ft/s---1.125 oz.---7.5 shot) Following their procedure and using the "light load" gas piston, I broke-in my VR80 with about 100 rounds of Black Aces Tactical ammunition (12 Ga---1.75"---1425 ft/s---1.2 oz.---00 buckshot) I had to lubricate the 9-round magazines with Liquid Wrench Dry Lube because they weren't pushing the rounds up fast enough. Now it eats anything as fast as I can pull the trigger.

Also leave the bolt locked back for 30 days or when not in use. It will soften the buffer spring.

I cleaned mine and tuned it shoot any of the rounds make your gas ports are clean and same size watch the comp prep video done and mine is 100% rocking ran it on the break-in the machine for 2 hours didn't want to shoot 200 shells like the saiga 12

so basically, what you took 20 minutes and 57 seconds to tell us was , the semi auto VR80 shotgun needs to be fired with the appropriate ammo in order for this gas action shotgun to work properly. great info. thanks

Is anyone else having light primer strikes issues with their vr80? Before I upgraded the trigger to a tooth and nail trigger I was getting 60 percent light primer strikes now I’m down to about 25 percent with the tooth and nail. Shooting high brass 1300+FPS. Have not had one single failure to feed or failure to eject but the light primer strikes are even worse. I feel like the bolt release metal in the gun is getting in the way of the hammer to strike the pin enough? I’m going to be taking a Dremel to thin the inside of the metal on the bolt a little bit but I feel like these guns are more work than they are worth. Let me know what you guys think. Seems like everyone is getting mixed results with these vr80’s

low pressure was the bane of the AS VALs existence the 9x39s pressure is so low that AKs adapted for it need a secondary gas port closer to the actual explosion to reliably cycle. its no wonder a slightly different o ring replacement is insufficient for cycling the low brass rounds....... I am only 5 min in so you may explain this and also I admittedly know very little about the AR platform by comparison but just a theory.

Parker Smith did you just watch Brandon Herreras video on the AS VAL? I literally watched it yesterday lol, never thought to compare the two but it actually makes a whole lot of sense, the gas port is crazy close to the chamber, don’t have the gun anymore but it has to be no more than six inches from the initial blast!

So what shells are better for the vr80?

I'd say for reliability, low brass is a no go. Anything high brass or has over 1 1/4 oz. should do it! 1 oz fosters run fine but they are the exception. Hope that helps!
