Instead of just dismissing Rhaenyra, Viserys should have taken time to discuss this at length with her. Whether she's a princess or a ruling queen, she still needs to know how to govern.

F#%^ yeah! This was definitely one of his weaknesses. His bias about women is clearly a problem that even he struggled with. If it was a problem for him even though she’s his daughter, he should have anticipated how it would be a problem for others.

@@DeepikaGinger Exactly. I really don't understand as to why Viserys kept it all a secret whenever he councils Rhaenyra. Even the part when Viserys wanted Rhaenyra to be the heir again. Viserys used to not want her to be the heir but he changed his mind but the thing is, Viserys told her that in private. So, her words means nothing to Otto and the Greens. Viserys imo should've publicly announced that to everyone so the Kingsguards at least know and the people that it's true. Rhaenyra was the true heir to the throne. But no!! Viserys made a huge mistake too at everything. I can't believe Otto has been his hand for years lol

Sadly her own sons proved why that could be a bad idea. While having a dragon is certainly a powerful show of force, it does not make one invincible and the loss of both a dragon and heir of the king would be huge.

@@fishofgold6553 It doesn't mean it is not dangerous. She is inexperienced so it is easy for anything to happen. When Daemon went to battle on his dragon he got shot with arrow and had to escape. And he went to battle with experience and full plate armor.
Viserys doesn’t actually have dragon riders to send to the Stepstones. He obviously will not send his teen daughter and Daemon is currently busy stirring up new drama. Corlys, on the other hand, has Meleys and Seasmoke on his side. So is it the lack of dragons or does Corlys just want someone else to do the dirty work? Stepstones were never a part of Westeros. The Iron Throne has no claim to them. This is why Viserys doesn’t just jump in on this war.

But the actions of those claiming the stepstones have a direct impact on Westerosi trade and as the King who's responsible for protecting his bannermen it is Viserys' duty to take care of the matter. Velaryon was right to push the matter, about which they weren't even talking about at all.
@krishkrish8213

@Wordlifematt What about securing the StepStones and making an example of those who threatened the trading fleets. A strong presence there would have deterred the pirates from attacking. And with the fleets safe, the realm would have economically prospered due to the shipping lanes being free of pirates. Also, the use of dragons patrolling the shipping lanes would have acted as a deterence for any pirate attack. Daemon with carraxes patrolling the shipping lanes would have been a much better use of his talents as well, keeping him away from trouble and also serving the realm. As vierys got older, his sons could also take on this burden as well, putting the dragons and dragon riders to use in securing the realms' prosperity. Also, in addition, I believe historically the iron throne or westerosi nobles have had a claim on the step stones I might be wrong, but ownership of the step stones has gone through various factions and is an important strategic land mass.
Daemon almost died with his dragon fighting in the Stepstones and latter two of Rhaenyra’s sons will be defeated and captured in the Narrow Sea by a Triarchy fleet despite being on dragons. Dragons are not invincible and the loss of them would be much greater than losing shipping.
Rhaenyra tries to make a huge strategic decision and her father gives her 1 small task instead. Choosing the next Kingsguard and she messed that up

Otto never deserved to be hand of the king at all.
People are saying his daughter is right, but Viserys is smarter and not young and hot-headed to rush into war. If they instantly used dragon to deal with all their problem right away do you think people would want trade relationship or to be your friend knowing that you can instantly just burn anyone before trying to solve it diplomatically or talk it over? Don't rule with fear, rule with wisdom that's why Viserys grandfather lived a long and golden age life for westeros.
@krishkrish8213

Though ruling by fear, I'd also say an important part of rulership, if your enemies don't fear you and they can see that they can hire pirates and interrupt your trade without any fightback then that would make them weak and vulnerable to a larger offense. Take in our world, countries that are weak, meaning weak in rulership. This means that countries do not invest in both the civilian aspect and also the defence aspect vulnerable to other nations.

What he should have done it teach them a lesson one they would never forget to, which would prevent further attacks out of fear of the Kings retribution.

@krishkrish8213 It was nowhere near Westeros. The Seasnake had made enemies in the free cities because he had built a huge trading fleet. Attacking the whole of the free cities would have been idiotic. The Stepstones have always been the home of pirates.

Rhaenyra wasn't wise during this, she displayed her naïveté that dragons simply make you win wars and the matter is settled. Hence, the embarrassment of the table.

That's a fact tho. Only reason the Targs went down is because they started infighting. Dragons literally rule the world in this universe. No, the awkward air at the table comes from the inaction of these people who enjoy their high positions in the capitol, while people die daily in the stepstones. Besides, Rhaenyra showing initiative to act is the important bit here, not the details of her plan.

@@sigismund7463 See? That wasn't so hard, was it? Yes, if you're the only one with a nuke you are invincible, because GoT/HotD is not about individuals, but houses. You kill 1 of theirs, they burn you, your friends, your friend's family and everyone you've ever been nice to. And then noone ever touches them again, because noone can match the nuke. Noone ever was talking about *innocent* people dying in the stepstones, where do you get that from? They're actively wasting troops in the stepstones, a conflict which - by the way - was solved by dragons. Did YOU watch the show at all? The whole disaster of the stepstones dragging on for so long is what made all the nobles doubt the king's strength and will in the first place. Had Daemon not taken to it personally they'd have lost control completely and soon dozens of Lords depending on sea trade would be against them. So yea, they were talking about the stepstones. Pay attention.
Its a a bad decision @Brett Smashy the best corse of action is to hire your own pirates against them. Dragons means defacto war.

Long term, always sending dragons to solve the problems would lead to untold devastation. Not to mention they dont exactly control the dragons as well as they show to outsiders. They could easily end up losing dragon riders and dragons over time to plots, accidents, not to mention being overthrown once everyone realizes they will just burn everyone. I'm sure you'd find some scorpions in your bed if you had a reputation for burning cities.

Wars are complicated, no matter who wins, the overall realm suffers. Viserys is very kind and he was trying to preserve the peace that his predecessor achieved. He was at his weakest after his wife's death and that is when he was taken advantage of by greens. Overall i think he was very strong person, He took a controversial decision that his daughter will rule after him and even though everyone tried for more than 20 years to get him to name someone else, He didn't. Viserys did make some bad decisions when he was at his weakest but he used his rest of the life to correct those mistakes, There would have been much less chance of a rebellion if viserys was not ill in his last days, War happened because of the greed of lords of the seven kingdom especially greens, lannisters and his own wife who poisoned her children to hate rhaenyra.
