    Hi from Croatia! I am enjoying the same car, similar age, and mileage, for three years now. Wonderfull both for slow cruising on local roads, and on the mountain paths. Keep the engine well lubricated, don't starve it for oil, and it will serve you well...

    ... and also, when you change the engine oil, after you've let it drip for a few hours, take a look at the state of your oil pickup sump screen with a flashlight through the drain hole. If it's not clean and shiny, your engine might be going the same route mine did, in which case changing the injectors is a cheap operation compared to an engine swap, believe me :-)...

    @@offroadfun120 I have changed the oil and filter just recently, and a couple days after I thought just the same thing; I should have checked the mesh screen...! Next time... Though I don't understand how are oil clogging and bad fuel injectors related?!?

    @@Zmayski-z-Brega It's not that much the injectors, it's the injector seats. Those are prone to leaking after a few hundred thousand kilometers. Injectors are cooled down by an oil "channel" that runs horizontally at the top, which is isolated from the bottom by an rubber o-ring. When injector seats start leaking, the heat from the combustion chamber goes up, destroys the o-ring and starts overheating oil. Over-heated oil forms carbon crystals (like coal) which are carried away and end up clogging the sump pickup. It is very well documented in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oo6O2ZqnmZTAoag.html and that's exactly what happened to my engine last year (at 4:22 onwards). Had to change the engine block :-( . Many other cases are documented by Anthony, the 1KD-FTV guru at Fourby4Diesel, e.g. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rK6B265-Y9TWgZc.html As the injectors themselves can also be faulty and destroy pistons (unrelated to the oil burning issue) I chose to also replace all 4 of them to avoid any further problems.

    @@offroadfun120 Thank you for an explanation, OffRoadFun! I was considering replacing the injectors for some time now, but you convinced me with what you said; I will do that soon, replacing the seats, too. The only bad issue I experienced with this engine was once going to "limp mode" during the hard and long uphill drive (computer reported fuel pump drop to zero pressure for a moment; technician suspected a bad fuel). There is also a soft knocking in mid-range RPMs when the engine is cold (probably injectors, I am guessing). Great videos and suggestions!

    @@Zmayski-z-Brega You're welcome. Some knocking with a cold Diesel is not always a sign of issue. A better way to know injectors state is reading values with an OBD tool (or better yet, Toyota's Techstream). However, don't trust the "if all 4 feedback values are between +3 and -3, injectors are good" myth you can read on the net. Similar feedback just means that injectors are in a similar state (and if not, you can tell which one is faulty), but it does not mean they are all good. Here are some videos that illustrate good/bad cases (measure when coolant temperature is above 80°C): Readings to be expected on a KDJ120 with manual gearbox with good injectors : kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5OOxdRxqc6YlLA.html Readings to be expected on a KDJ120 with automatic gearbox with good injectors : kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKqBpNmlY7O6hco.html Readings with bad injectors : kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqJhuZOxisrKlrw.html To summarize in one reading : Load should be below 16-17% when idling with warm engine (ideally below 10% for manual, below 12% for automatic). If you're above that, I'd replace injectors if I were you, no matter if the seats are leaking or not. Just my 2 cents :-)

    Hi Bosko. No, I avoided the air suspension for that reason. According to what I read, the chances of breaking the air suspension system are low, but if it breaks, costs go through the roof. So coil springs for me. Also, I think air suspension was only an option on the higher end VXE or VXV trim. Mine is a VX (no sunroof, no heated seats, no satnav). Cheers.

    Hi. My KDJ120 is one of the latest, 2009. Additionally to traditional 2nd hand car checks, here are particular weaknesses of the KDJ120 : cracks in inner guards (aka "fender cracks" aka "joues d'ailes déchirées" in French), mostly for models with double battery (cold countries). e.g. photos.app.goo.gl/DGXD1GvNVQnGQ5Bm8 Also if you're looking for a Diesel model, make sure injectors have been replaced every 150 000km otherwise... see video :-). Avoid the hi-end version with rear air suspensions, they are known to leak after a certain time and repair is very expensive. Finally, one easy way to know if that car has been through heavy offroad is to check the state of the engine protection. It should have metal mesh grids like this : photos.app.goo.gl/RoSWtdLMw34hxt699 . If it's gone or damaged, probably the car has been used "as it was designed to be used" ;-) . Happy hunting !

    A thorough analysis of engine (and other) issues of the KDJ120 can be found in this video I just came across : kzread.info/dash/bejne/oo6O2ZqnmZTAoag.html Don"t panic though, compared to other brands with same mileage, the 1KDFTV is not the worst. But well, fuel economy and higher power per liter inevitably increase constraints on the engine...

    The places traveled with his Toyota off-road vehicle are really beautiful, too bad it is treated so badly, as to make it go in the middle of the mud, I think that the Land is well done, the electrical filaments oxidize like the control units, and the electronics do not fail but, electricity with water does not get along.

  • @offroadfun120

    I understand your comment and I agree that driving through water and mud is harder on vehicles than pavement. However, I own another car for my daily and holiday use and wanted to dedicate a second vehicle to "bad treatment" as you call it :-). I looked at the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Rubicon, older 70-series Land Cruiser, etc. which all look better suited to hard use, but don't be misguided by the KDJ120 "SUV" appearance, it's kind of a wolf in sheep's clothing (plus, it's cheaper and more comfortable than any of these other options in good condition). It is build for tough use and electronic parts are very well protected. The user manual explicitely states it is suited to drive through 70cm of water... In other words, if keeping it in pristine condition was a requirement, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place :-)

    how to prevent that injector failure?

  • @offroadfun120

    @offroadfun120

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, I don’t think you can prevent the failure but you should replace them before they fail. E.g. diagnostic tools can indicate the « engine load », which increases when injectors wear. But as a rule of thumb, with what I now learned, I’d replace them around the 200000km mark (no matter the « compensation » values, which only represent unbalanced wear). Note however that in my case, the failure was not due to the injectors themselves but to a leak of one seat. This could have been detected during oil change : let the oil drain for the night, then the next morning, carefully check the state of the metal sump screen through the drain hole. If it has coal-like particles over it, you should urgently replace the defective seat, and due to the work involved, it’s probably the right time to consider changing worn injectors too. KR.

    @@offroadfun120 Thanks for the replay! Maybe changing the seats every 50000km would be the smart move too. I am thinking about buying Land Cruiser, for family use cause of reliability, but this thing concerns me. Maybe a petrol engine is a better choice but here in Serbia, there's only one LC with 4.0 petrol on sale. I really don't need a 4.0 engine :D Anyway, thanks again for your advice, very helpful!

    @@orepaunovic2189 Well, my video might give you the feeling the 1KDFTV engine is not reliable, but I really think it is not the case. I bought this vehicle at 296000 km and it failed at 300000, but I am sure the problem already existed before and I wasn't experienced enough to detect it. There are hundreds of thousands of vehicles with 1KDFTV engines and only a very small part have issues :-). Care and regular maintenance will go a long way. However, changing the seats regularly could be a good way to make sure everything is still in good condition. If you want in-depth information about that engine and its maintenance, there's plenty of videos about it on this channel : kzread.info They are quite verbose, but the two following ones carry out a step-by-step injector replacement : kzread.info/dash/bejne/faSNo5amo5qnnJs.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5mZrdaOZaSpp5s.html .
