REVISIT: Nintendo Switch Lite BACKLIGHT FAULT (Black Screen)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi, this revisit video is on the Nintendo Switch Lite with the faulty backlight. I have now managed to find some spares, so I am going to attempt the repair again.
GadgetUK164 KZread Channel is / gadgetuk164
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

Thanks ever so much for the shout Vince =D This is perhaps your most epic repair!!! You followed it right from the initial burn marks to all of the faulty components! I don't know about Switch Killer, your new name should be Switch Master =D BTW the reason the voltage doesnt drop much when the backlight is not visible, its using PWM rather than just DC. Test your scope on it and you will see some pulses rather than straight DC!

Well done Vince. It's an inductor, if you look under the microscope it will almost look like glitter, this is (as far as i know) the ferrite composition, a resistor on the other hand will be a flat shaded colour, unfortunately that particular revision of your component tester isn't sensitive enough to measure a lot of ranges of inductance.... sometimes simply soldering wires to the component is enough to trigger a good reading. The component tester isn't technically incoreect as techinically an inductor is a resistor... :)

At minute 18:00, when you moved the console, you can see the backlight flashing on for a moment in the conector under the cartridge slot. It's was kinda "working" there. The problem doesn't look to be the BGA but a connection problem

Awesome work Vince. That chip must be the backlight controller. The resistor you changed there is an inductor which prevents interference caused by low frequencies on the voltage lines and filters out stable voltage. Technically, even if you shorted it, you would get backlight to work but you would have seen some flickering as well. Backlight issues are generally caused by a bad backlight driver and diode (if you see, there are some diodes also on the backlight circuit). An inductor usually never burns out but turns out this Nintendo Switch actully had it blown from what I suspect, water damage or moisture. I have an old monitor with a similar problem and I was unable to fix it. Turned out the backlight needed 30V to turn on. So I took a 32V adapter from a dead HP printer and fixed it that way. The backlight control does not work from the monitor and the brightness is fixed (not adjustable) but it is functional that way. I gave it to one of my friends and it has been more than 2 years and he still uses it.

Vince, I would suggest getting a BGA soldering stencil as well as some solder paste. It would help massively with those BGA chips because then you could just use soldering wick to clean the bottom of them, use the stencil to apply the solder paste and use hot air to melt the solder paste into solder balls.

Excellent video. You saved me a lot of ton of time diaging my own switch lite. Unfortunately, I lack the proper tools to repair mine. I found the capacitor between your .5 resistor and the black nine pad controller was shorted at 327 ohms. Its odd because it would only beep for a split second on my continuity test. I would just replace that but I don't have the right tools for the job and I don't have a spare switchboard. Regardless, it was fun to pinpoint the issue. Looks like I'll have to be putting mine up for sale on eBay haha I'll be sure to put everything that I found out in the description so I'm not like those guys that waste your time and money! Great to see your progress through the years, Vince! Which reminds me, did you ever put that very first Switch back together? I seem to remember that it had an issue you can quite routinely fix today but weren't confident enough to try back then. Then again, that poor thing was used for spares on a couple of later videos, so it might not be in any condition to be brought back to life even if it would've been an easy fix if you got it fresh today.-

I love the chinesse LCR meter. But of course it has its limitations . Being said that, I use heavily on repairs. A proper LCR is way expensive and does not worth the risk (I repair PSUs and charged caps are an issue). But on tiny values can fail. Getting 17V from 3.7 requires an inductor somewhere.
