Reviewing YOUR disc golf form!

Спорт

In this video Tomas Ekström, disc golf hall of famer, goes through some of the form videos you guys send us a while back. Not saying what´s right or what the "correct way" of throwing just trying to help out as many of you as possible with some pointers and/or angles you might want to try instead.
Note that the “issues” that Tomas saw in video he picked was shown in a lot of the other videos as well. So they work as kind of examples.
We like to give a BIG thank everyone who sent us a video! And we´re hoping you´ll be helped by this. Do let us know what you think 😀

    For the woman I noticed that her foot was still up at the apex of her reach back so basically her timing is off between her upper and lower body. That foot should be planted when she is at the apex of her reach back. Other then that her shot look really good with maybe a few minor tweaks.

    What I'm learning as a beginner is to forget the cross step for a while because it just overcomplicates the throw. Throw from a standstill using weight transfer and reach back until you have it down. You will actually throw farther and not create bad habits you have to fix later.

    To pull or not to pull, that is the question. Here in Finland, I think the current thinking on this (according to throwing experts like Jaani Länsiö), is that a good throw does not involve “pulling” the disc, but focuses more on rotational force (led by the non-dominant shoulder commencing the reach-out [not to be confused with reachback] and then brought aggressively forward through weight transfer from back to front leg and a driving of the hips) with all of that energy and force put into the disc and released with a sharp snap. I think if the last guy in the video (the powerful jumper) would engage his hips better and plant his front foot at least 90 degrees from the target instead of pointing straight forward, I’m sure he’d be belting those discs out beyond 500 feet, as long as the timing and fluidity of his mechanics are otherwise in order.

    Nice work gentlemen, great critiques: I would have also pointed out that some of those examples the footwork was either really wide or too in line with the back foot: I am also very tall and after shortening my plant foot distance I got a lot more power: I find it also helps to try to keep the disc in a neutral position before the reach back, the less extra movement the better energy is transferred: happy holidays

    Every single guy has a low elbow problem. This will result in the arm pointing down to the ground at release and wrist will subconsciously aim up to compensate -> nose up release. This costs *at least* 50 feet like he says, probably even 100 feet if you have some power and are throwing a driver. Low elbow will also cause a weaker throw because the further you can get the disc away from your spinning torso, the faster it will go, just how the people on the edge of a merry-go-round go faster compared to those closer to the middle. This is also why you see every top pro with their elbow 90 degrees away from their torso (the angle: right elbow -> right shoulder -> torso) at all times.

  • @crossconnector

    @crossconnector

    3 жыл бұрын

    So I come from a baseball background and when batting you keep the elbow close for speed. I should work on putting my elbow straight out from my body to form a right angle in my armpit? That honestly makes a lot of sense because I don’t feel comfortable throwing with it close but I wasn’t aware that it’s proper to throw with it out

  • @Postermaestro

    @Postermaestro

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@crossconnector baseball arm position is a bit different because you are obviously holding a bat with two hands, but the idea is the same. You use your lower body -> torso to power your arms that power the bat. You don't keep the tip of the bat close to your body during the hit, it swings out so that it has maximum speed at the point of contact with the ball. If anything, think of your lower arm more like the bat. You're not pulling the disc straight past your chest with your arm, but you are rotating your hips -> torso (while maintaining roughly 90˚ right elbow -> right shoulder -> left shoulder as well as right elbow -> right shoulder -> torso) -> that power the lower arm swinging out and releasing. So you plant *then* you twitch your hips (compare it to throwing a ball) and this initiates the whole movement. You can watch slowmos of pros and see how the hip twitch combined with planting and stopping their forward momentum causes their left knee to collapse in behind their right. Your lower arm will swing out by itself at some point as you are turning, try it yourself with with a limp lower arm. Adding power by consciously opening the elbow just at the right time is part of the timing aspect. The point of release is with the elbow still in this 90˚ position (both angles that i mentioned) with the lower arm straight away from the torso in line with the upper arm, pointing ~30-40 degrees *left* of the target line. Going through he whole motion, the lower arm will follow the elbow on a straight line until the torso starts rotating which causes the right elbow to go right of the line and the lower arm swings out from the body to full extension of the arm. I also want to add that bracing doesn't make sense until you get this proper movement. By bracing you can push off the ground and accelerate the speed at which the arm rotates around, just like how a batter or golfer pulls the club backwards rather than pushing it forward during the hit

  • @Postermaestro

    @Postermaestro

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@crossconnector i rewatched your video and you have by far the best mechanics of the group, just making sure you aim low with your wrist will give you a lot of distance. Elbow needs to be higher (keep in mind that if you are throwing a hyzer it will not be horizontal to the ground, but the 90˚ to your torso stays the same). Also you are letting the right elbow -> right shoulder -> left shoulder angle collapse too much, aka rounding, but those things are probably related. A low elbow makes it so you can't get the disc in front of you (you would hit yourself), so you have to lag behind and start flinging it out too early.

    This was a great video! I really enjoyed watching the "in the moment" feedback. I'll need to pay more attention to your channel for the next time you request videos for form critiques. Which platform did you use request videos, was it through an instagram feed? That is how I found this video this morning. It would be an honor to watch your critique of my form.

    KZread texting Swedish names: “First off ben yemen sorg fosh from sweden let’s go” I think this is a great way for English speaking people to learn how to pronounce Swedish 😂
