    Great review! Of course you are right, stabbing from above is a lot more effective and the handle isn't designed for that. I did not make it for the purpose of being a perfect dagger. It was made for one purpose only: Piercing the armor plate in the "stab proof" vest I reviewed. That plate is not accessible from above. You HAVE to approach it the way I did in my original video. I can certainly see why you want to change the handle so it allows all kinds of strikes, and I am sure it will be a better dagger afterwards. Have fun!

    The main purpose of a dagger is to stab without the opponent seeing your weapon. Hard to do when you are flailing it around over your head too. Might as well use an axe, or even an ice axe. Also, I would like to see you test if you can apply more force pushing upwards from a crouch than hitting downwards. ice pick is certainly faster, but I would wager pushing up, especially with your exemplary strength, working against gravity allows you to apply more force. I just feel in a light jelly, a faster attack will appear to do more damage, as the slower attack even if more forceful will simply move the jelly, rather than penetrate in the way it would stabbing a properly weighted person. I don't think I have seen you with a force meter either. Something to make?

    The weapon is more of a "Poignard" than a dagger. There are historical fighting manuals for poignard that show the weapon being used exactly as JoergeSprave is telling us.

    I use to dagger fight as a kid. Actually almost lost an eye once and still have a scar there. One reason to hold it in the upward thrust position versus the icepick grip is that it makes it easier to go for someones eye. That's the key, if you can takeout their eye than you automatically have a permanent advantage so many people like to use that technique.

I am not training ISIS militants, I swear" or "I understand that it is a fantasy sword and it is meant to be utterly unrealistic, I'm nitpicking over it for teh lulz", or that he needs to point out that constructive criticism does not equal ungratefulness. The fact, that there are people for whom these statements are not obvious by default, makes me sad.

    I know my comment is late af, but it mostly has to do with the fact that people like pointing out the obv as long as they benefit in some way. If you've ever been into a court you would know how stupid shitty details that are OBVIOUS need to get straightened out otherwise they're considered as evidence and a potential reason for a wrong judgment. People implement this in everyday life and take it as, if not specified it can be what it could be regardless of the obvious factor, just to either win an argument or further their agenda. Humans like the express themselves and nowadays culture is centered around this way of thinking.

    What I always liked about Skall was his honesty about the things he reviews. I don't have a HEMA or Eskrima background, in fact I only have boxing/MMA so I wondered what knife grip would be more compatible with the training that I DO have. With the forward grip, you're basically throwing hooks when you stab something, however, just like in boxing, hooks are powerful but only because of their speed and acceleration. It takes a lot of practice to throw a hook properly with enough power behind it . Another problem is, you can't bring the knife up to a boxing like stance because it would be dangerous for the user. The knife point would always face the wielder. For reverse grip, the stabbing movement is more hammer fist like, striking with the bottom of the fist which isn't used in boxing, but also behaves like an overhand right with some strikes, especially when striking down in an arching motion, as the force of the stab utilizes both gravity and the speed/acceleration produced by the person. And with a boxing stance, the knife grip works very well with hands up like a regular boxing stance because it makes a defensive stance even more dangerous with the knife jutting forward. This video raised some good points about the advantages of the reverse grip over hammer grip. And although boxing is VERY different from an average knife attack, it is still nice thinking about how I could blend the two. This review helped me think about it some more.

    John B so I do hema and mma- the hammer grip would be better for boxers then the average person- but the ice pick will nearly always generate more power body mechanically.

  • @benjohnsonbulac

    @benjohnsonbulac

    I learned kali, eskrima and balisong fighting for many years and we're taught to use both grips. The hammer grip is used more to wound/slash your opponent. This is aimed mainly to weaken the other party. The ice pick grip is used to hook, parry or to finish the other party with a powerful strike.

  • @carbon1255

    @carbon1255

    Mechanically speaking, the thrust up will do far more damage to a real person, as you can apply way more power and they will not see it coming. ice pick is useful because it disables a arm if you get it in the shoulder between bones, and the flesh is weak there. Contrary to what skallagrim says, you can only use your leg muscles on thrusting upwards, simply his technique is all wrong, because he only practices with the ice pick. He really needs to lower his centre of gravity and spring up, potentially using both hands to ram it home, rather than doing weak sidearm twists, which are perfectly fine for injuring in hema, but not a real stabbing technique where you are trying to bring the blade up under the ribcage. I think it comes down to sheer body strength. if you are a muscly type like joerg you will do WAY more damage underam. if you do not have the strength to lift someone up with one arm, probably better to rely on speed. But it is VERY wrong that ice pick will generate more power, it is totally untrue. Working with gravity means you are limited by it, working against it you have traction with the ground.

  • @boyarvalishin9565

    @boyarvalishin9565

    Carbon 12 good point. Here are 2 things that I think would make the forward grip just as devastating as the icepick grip. Being capable of activating rotational energy of the hip, leg, shoulder, etc, to channel a very powerful "hook" like motion, like boxers are very good at doing, and also his position of the stab. If you notice, Skal is directly in front of the target, and he stabs the front of the vest. Ideally, boxers will strike the side of the body with the hook because that is where the punch will dig in the most. If Skal were to stand slightly to the side, like Joerg did, and then stab the front of the vest, or were to simply stab the side of the vest, with the proper technique he could have a greater result than what was shown. Then again, it takes familiarity with the movement to throw a proper forward stab. Skal used mostly the movement of his arm, and especially because of the position of where he is stabbing, the rest of his body doesn't follow through, and he is essentially doing a weak arm movement. It'd be similar to throwing a punch with only your arm, and not the rest of your body. Another thing to consider is while the ice pick grip lets gravity work for you with the strike, the forward grip is intended for gravity to work for you with your opponent. Think of it like your opponent "falling on the blade".

    World's Biggest Booty Hoes no one here is claiming to be experts. We were just saying basic shit man. Downward grip is generally more powerful, forward grip can be powerful too if you use the right technique. Some people agree and some don't. Badabing, pretty revolutionary ideas, huh. I don't know where you live man, but not everyone can just walk into their local knife fighting McDojo and learn how to shank someone "the right way". "Pseudo experts" wtf? Did anyone here say that the proper way to knife fight was to go watch their sensei's 4 part series in ancient secret service special forces tactical units of Raa - knife fighting edition? Nah, we just made some points about the vid man. 😐

    Little note about stabbing ballistic gel: It grips significantly more than a living body. A great example is to watch a comparison of an arrow going into ballistics gel, then seeing the same arrow from the same bow shot through a deer. My point being, those stabs you were making would likely have gone up to the hilt each time, as living targets don't grip the blade/shaft nearly as much as gel.

    About the upward thrust, it wouldn't make it more powerful than the downward thrust but you could also flex your legs and do it like a boxing uppercut, by putting your rotation AND the power of your legs into it (but you probably already know that and just didn't explain in detail so that you wouldn't sound rambly)

  • @carbon1255

    @carbon1255

    I agree absolutely. I think the difference is both down to his lesser arm strength and he is way more practiced with the ice pick grip. He uses a twisting stab which also is a weak attack designed for extra range not damage. Even a two handed squat and thrust is much stronger than this. Working against gravity always allows you to use more power than working with it, as you have something to push against. You can stand up way faster than you can fall to the ground, you simply have to be able to lift more than (twice?) your body weight with your legs. Which isn't tricky.

  • @salottin

    @salottin

    6 жыл бұрын

    Also true. I didn't think about the working against gravity part beforehand, but seems plausible (and maybe more controlable?). And, if you're into a fight, you shouldn't use the downward thrust unless you're grappling or trying to fight someone in armor and hit the gaps facing upwards, because then if you miss you're dropping your weight and will lose balance. If you're stabbing upwards or straight, it's not only more manageable but also faster to recover and stab more if needed

    Utilizing your footwork with an invert directional rotation to the point of origin of your first foot (or forward foot in most martial arts instruction) one can “spring step” up into the lower ribs up into the gap behind the clavicle with much less effort in their “lethally effective” strike, as this makes most of the resistance force travel vertically, and THEIR weight drops back onto the point unless they buckle their knees, which puts you overtop of the opponent. Love your videos, keep up the amazing work friend

    Drew Dorman well, the guy who wrote the articles and such kinda contradicted his own claims, as he wrote showed how someone drove their truck into a group of people, and how to smuggle a knife, and a 3d printed gun onto public transport. And it was mostly because of the stabbing that happened in London some time prior to the video's release.

    I think that a very important point is missed! The down-up attack is much more difficult to protect from and anticipate then the up-down one. It is not just a matter of assassination. If I were to enter a medieval battlefield I would definitely like to have this dagger as it make a perfect supplementary weapon. Imagine you are in a clinch, or you sword got broken or you lost it. Will you go with an up-down attack? You can also be lying on the ground. As a matter of fact I would have two of those, second one made for the left hand. You can pull it for a side attack to the sword wielding arm or ribs. I can't think of a better weapon. About the drama: The media obviously blew it out of proportions and made their claim seem ridiculous, however it is undeniable that Joerg did show a method of building a most practical weapon against a stab-proof vest, so they do have a point, they just came up with ridiculous accusations on top of that. A side note: I don't see anything gay in having a mighty stabbing dick in your hand! What would you go to war with? A mighty stabbing tit?^^
