🕰 Reviewing the 1805 “Nun’s Cake” | Listen to a 200 Year Old Clock | Pioneer Days | LIVE CHAT

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The cake that nearly broke us. This recipe was published in The Art of Cookery, (1805), and has been tormenting innocent cooks ever since. Is the juice worth the squeeze? Was it worth mixing for 2 hours? Let's see.

Justine, I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have a friend (also in Pittsburgh) who is an expert dressmaker and I'm sure she could adjust your dress to add more room in the bust without altering the design. If this is want you want to do, let me know and I will give you my contact information. From my experience working with alterations, I advise you to take care of this sooner than later. You might have to order the dress's fabric from France...in order to make it slightly larger. It could take weeks or months just to receive the fabric from Europe. I wish you the best and appreciate your videos! I've learned a lot from watching them!

Also, the painting on the glass is called reverse painting, because it is done in reverse. by painting the smallest details on the back of the glass first and filling in the larger and larger details till the picture is finished.

I've seen the world's oldest all original clock. It had been running since 1390! A few years ago, they finally had to do some repair work, so I believe it's no longer all original parts, but still one of the oldest in the world. It's also an astronomical clock with the earth in the center.

As a person who has worked on many period costumes (mostly for operas and operettas) I know there are ways that a good seamstress can alter it... I know you don't like to think of that, but it's true. Good corsets help also, but I'm sure you know all about that. Seriously though, the non-educated or less educated nuns did the manual labor like cooking, laundry and growing vegetables, while the more educated ones did the artsy and intellectual stuff, like hand painting sacred books, embroidering altar cloths and priest's vestments, or checking the accounting books. If they only had women from wealthy families, they could hire some of the local women to do the chores. This wasn't a "privilege" thing. It just made sense to assign to the educated nuns the kind of work they did, and likewise to the non-educated, because teaching someone to paint or embroider takes a lot of time. The educated nuns have been painting and embroidering since childhood because that was the "education" given to females at the time. Nowadays, it's more equal since everybody gets more or less the same quality of education, so they rotate chores amongst themselves.

Justine. If your wedding dress laces up you can use a stomacher to cover the gap between the lacing. I don't know if it's back or front lacing but you can still use a triangle or rectangle in a similar color or a contrast color. I know you can't get the same fabric but a stomacher would work.

If you REALLY want sugar or chocolate, erythritol is a good sugar-free alternative and Whole Foods sells it organic and non-gmo. Lily's chocolate is a sugar-free chocolate that's sweetened with stevia. Zevia is a good stevia sweetened sugar-free "soda", I like their cream soda and ginger and cherry ones.

My shin and knee are still bruised. But, I can walk and stand without pain. I can touch my nose without pain. There is still a stitch in my mouth, that has a scar tissue bump around it. All in all, everything is better. I pray for healing and God supplies it. I also saved my house, from the sherriff's sale. That was with the help of my son, daughter and a very good lawyer. Also, being qualified for widow's benefits helped too. I prayed every minute of the day, that He woke me up for. God made it all possible. I have enough now for the mortgage and arrears repayments per month. It is a load off my mind and soul. It had me spiraling in my depression and panic anxiety watching your videos and the chew and chat, helped me alot. Thank you for what you do and teach us. ❤ Cheryl, the local Subway Sandwich Artist in Pennsylvania. Lol.

The idea behind so many early American clocks having an image of Mt. Vernon on them, was that we were a young country, and the best we could come up with for decorating our clocks as the Europeans did with their famous castles and palaces - was the home of our Hero - George Washington's Mt. Vernon. It was like.... "Well, we've got Mt. Vernon!"

Just my theory lol. Loved the mold.

Called a "Pillar and Scroll" clock - and were made through the 1820s into the 1830s. Has a wooden mechanism, and these were one of the earliest mass-produced clocks in the US. Seth Thomas, Eli Terry, Silas Hoadley, etc. were among the first manufacturers of these. I love it! It's a treasure - hold on to it! (To correct the strike - CAREFULLY move the hour hand to line up with the amount of strikes once it goes off on the hour) And yes, it's going to be temperamental - the wooden mechanism can even swell and contract with the the weather. Think of it this way....if you were nearing two hundred years old, you can afford to be fussy!

Set the clock hands to the hour that the chimes ring for, then slowly progress the minute hand (large arm) so you hear the progressive chimes ring, until finally the clock syncs to the actual time. If the chime is simply off- time, there is usually a wire "lever" that releases the chime flywheel. It's often visible at the base of the face piece. Try releasing it by lifting it up without moving the dial hands, essentially catching the number of chimes up to the correct hour.

Justine, if you really want to loose a lot of weight quickly you should go lowcarb/carnivore for a couple of months. You're allowed to eat cheese burgers (without the bread, sauce & fries!) as well as any meat, fish, & most animal based products (cheese, bacon, eggs etc.... !!!!). It's hard at the beginning but after a week or so it becomes natural. It's amazing as it also helps with many health problems. Good luck !

I had to lose 12 lbs to fit into my wedding dress, and i had two months. Also a dress that could NOT be altered. I walked A LOT. I toned down my carbs, but not a crazy diet. I walked 30 minutes in the morning, 1+hour in the evening. Every day. No soda. No candy. I got there, you will too. If it is the bust line - there may be a garment that can adress that for you. Try different options like minimizers? Or custom

Kind of funny about the rose water; my dad used to put rose water in filling of a strawberry pie! Others seemed to like it. I don't really remember how it tasted though.

The receipt has enough to feed a whole village. I wonder if the nuns sustained themselves with bake sales and maybe these were sold as little cakes. Or possibly given as "offerings" when visiting the sick and the poor. I like to imagine that nuns did make them and the only leavening is from the air beaten into the eggs for 2 hours ☺

You definitely made me laugh so hard!!! So much fun watching you stirring for 2 hours. Maybe it’s called nuns cake because it took a lot of nuns to take turns beating it.

Beautiful clocks. I actually have an antique Seth Thomas that I inherited from my grandparents. It's a tabletop style. Justine, I hope you are able to wear your dress ! Ron, I'm surprised you liked the cake as much as you did with the caraway seeds !

Definately take it to a clock smith have it cleaned and synchronized. Then you are correct, Justine, it needs to be level. I have an Friedrich Mauthe German Clock 1860 and it works so good. Wind it weekly and its perfect. Have the click smith teach you how to set the hour arm if it ever gets off sync. Also clocks are better or do better if one person is the one that takes care of them on a schedule. I’m so excited you guys have got a clock that is awesome. I call clocks the heartbeat of the home and I think that they are so important in the rhythm of every day life so I do hope you enjoy it.

Your clock is a pillar and scroll case shelf or mantle clock. It's very lovely. We have an Eli Terry pillar and scroll clock from about 1817, and Seth Thomas adopted Terry's original design. Seth Thomas is thought to have made about 4000 clocks in his time!
