    Hobby Lobby cleared out their Van Gogh line some time ago. If you're lucky you can still find some of them in their clearance section for $1.25 a tube or less. I snagged the entire set, and absolutely love them.

    I did the exact same thing after I saw Hobby Lobby starting putting them on clearance. I actually said aloud "Noooooo" when I saw the display was gone.

    Van Gogh is my favourite so far. All the good qualities you've mentioned above. And you really can't beat the price. The retail price in my country, converted to USD, is around $2 per tube. Compared to Cotman's $3.5. I really want to try the Daniel Smith set, but it's a whopping $50s here. Great review! And, yes please, could you upload video for the pink flower? Thanks a lot, Lindsay! 😊

    I'm glad you reviewed these. I had several tube when I first started painting over 20 years ago, and I remember buying a couple of them more than once. I honestly thought they were my favorite student brand, then Academy and then Cotman. I picked up an inexpensive Daler and Rowney palette at Walmart not long ago but was disappointed. The other little palette I picked up back then was the Yarka Student Watercolor, 12 Color Pan Set. I've bought other sets for the grandkiddos and the Yarka was the best for them to paint with.

    Hi, thanks for the review. I was at my local Hobby Lobby and they had the same Van Gogh on clearance $1.05 a tube, so I bought a"lot" in basic colors. I love them, just did not know how good of a paint they are. So thank you for the review.

    I have Aquafine, Gansai Tambi and W&N Artist Professional pans and love them all because they're all so different. The W&N are the most transparent but seem to wear down faster, the Gansai Tambi range from very transparent when diluted to lacquer like and smell of gum arabic (I have a strong sense of smell), and the Aquafine pans are just fantastic everyday paints that I find creamy and vibrant. I don't have a favourite I just love the diversity.

    Thanks for the review. I did pick up the Daniel Smith set you mentioned on a previous big sale at Ellen Hutson. I'm hoarding them until I become more proficient with the Van Goghs. I have the field sketch set & find the set of pans well thought out, all pairs of warm & cool versions of the colours plus yellow ochre & of course black & white. I pulled them & will replace them with something more useful. They are quite a decent set & the case is very sturdy.

    Loved the review!! After reading a few comments below, I had this deep wish that I was more into WC and art instead of dance a year ago just so I could have grabbed those Van gogh tubes for a dollar...DANG, I MISSED OUT. Anyways, since you are my go to person for anything relating to WC...just have a quick question for you...would you pick Van gogh or Grumbacher Academy? Why do you dislike the Daler Rowley Aquafine set (you don't have to answer that if you don't want to)...bc Owings art and Mandy van Goeije seem to like it and you are definitely an amazing artist, so I was a little curious about that. Thank you so much for your patience with my constant, never-ending questions!!! KEEP UP THAT POSITIVITY!!

    I have a few tubes of acrylics from this brand, I love them! Also, the company that makes these has a line of student quality paints called Art Creation (my first set ever, 24 tubes x 12 ml each for the equivalent of $16 - that's in Europe, though, not sure if they are easily available in the US) and I find them comparable to Cotmans - I use the leftovers to refill the Cotman travel box and I don't notice much difference. Just to put another cheap option out there.

  • @gailgassen8670

    Thanks Lindsy this was great, I was going to ask your option on Van Gogh paints I was looking at them at dick Blick site. So you read my mind! Didn't know you had that talent also. Your just amazing, & I learn new things about all the time :D Seriously tho, I appreciate the review, I'm still using Windsor & Newton Cotman pocket set, that price at $13 & change wasn't something I could pass up. All of my good watercolor paints have gone by the wayside. After finding & digging out my old palettes not much left except dirty palettes. I should never have stopped painting. But I'm having fun relearning things, an occasional light bulb moment will go off for me. Now onto the watercolor pencils to see how those fair. I'm going to buy some. Prima WC pencils, at $8 + change I can't pass them up. I'm still wanting some Prima WC sets tho. I just love the colors in them, I'm sure I'm just weird over that. I love love the pastels they have & not sure I could mix to get those colors.. I do have some WC that came in a set of fairy painting how too. You know those book fairs? Yes well they always fall on grandparents day, so I hit all the grandkids schools. & buy a fortune in books. & one was a lovely fairy painting book to keep here. I'll have to do a review on those.hahaha! Well happy crafting! On darn I have another ? I'll put it on your blog! I'd love to see you paint that flower very quickly, I vote to watch you paint, so I can learn. LOL

    Ah you have tried Aquafine (Georgian Watercolor) - my first video was a Aquafine vs Cotman comparison and guess what? All the same issues. I find D&R Pro paints to have similarly dye-based paints and a lot of what I would consider hues but they just use vague names instead like "intense bright green" etc. Very chalky from the extenders as you say.

  • @TheSpinDoctor

    @TheSpinDoctor

    It is just the US name for Aquafine. A lot of people don't like Cotman who don't seem to have actually tried it - there's so much paint snobbery though...!

    Can u suggest a decent travel palette, student grade? I have Cotman and Sakura Koi and Jerry’s. Jerry’s is affordable but it has a slimy gel consistency that I don’t like at all. Looking for another decent cheapie brand, travel palette, that does have Sap green.

    I think they're actually a bit more vibrant than Cotman, but some colors are fairly. Whenever I let water sit on my pan of quin magenta the pigment separates from a white chalky substance that I think is filler. Then again, the prussian blue is so pigmented, it could almost be artist grade.
