Hi Theo, I like your reviews a lot. thanks for sharing. I have these watercolors, and i love them. i did some research about pigments and I think the reason why Van Gogh has limited colors are because they are between student and artist grade. they are great quality, and in the same time it is safe to use for students as some pigments are toxic, like cadmiums and dioxazine for example.

Great review, it's hard to find much mention of Van Gogh watercolor paints. I often use this set when I travel, and I find that I prefer the yellow ochre to both the Cotman and Winsor and Newton brands, which don't seem very pigmented, even when taken directly from the tube. Some of the colors from your set varied from mine- I'm glad to say they replaced the cobalt with a warm cerulean which works well for sky and water.

Late to the party, as usual, but I keep finding that I oddly like the Van Gogh paints and have a few in my permanent palette, even though the rest are all artist grade. My ultramarine is Van Gogh, as is my lemon yellow.

Hello Teoh, I would like to thank you for all your reviews, they are really helpful. I started with watercolors about half a year ago and I bought several Van Gogh half pans based on your review. For me, a beginner, they are great. I will maybe replace them one by one and use the empty half pans for W&N or Rembrandt tube paints, but for now, I'm more than happy with van gogh.

I agree! I just bought Windsor and Newton Cotman Cadmium Red Hue and Alizarin Crimson Hue yesterday to replace tubes of Van Goh Permanent Red and Madder Lake and I find them more pigmented than Van Gogh’s, which are smoother.

This set is expensive to me here(120 turkish liras) but i bought it anyways because it seems worth it. This is going to be my first time in watercolors i hope it would be well. Im so excited! Thank you so much for the video💞

After swatching and a few other tests ,these went to my great grand daughter. Thought it would be o.k. for travel palette. Nope. Might be o.k. for beginner but I would still suggest getting the best watercolors you can afford and slowly learn all about them. They go farther than you might think. Would go with triad of neutrals, plus a warm AND a cool of each . And learn to mix. Get tubes as they will be cheaper to fill your own pans. Prefer isabey size 6 Russian sable 6201 series and never push brush backward...learn to care for brush and will last YEARS.( I have 10 year old brush that still holds point perfectly) any paint will give you an idea if you even like watercolor And if you are willing to spend the time. Like sketching if often doesn't happen overnight. Thanks for the review I am sure it will help some but this has been my thought for a 60 years into watercolor person,

Teoh, great video as is always the case with your videos! If you can and want, let me suggest you a brand of watercolors to review, is the Venezia by maimeri. The 15ml tubes seem to be a good price/quality deal. I have two colors and they seem to be good (though not artist grade). Cheers.

I really like the volcano drawing with the Chinese white. When you painted foliage, you laid down the lighter hookers green first and then went back in with phthalo green to create the darker tone. did you mix the phthalo green with anything, or just straight out of the pan? Thanks Teoh.

+Marisa Hernandez I painted the lighter greens with Hookers Green. For the dark areas, they were mixed with Phthalo Green and Madder Lake (for other brands it would be Carmine or Perm Alizarin Crimson). You can't use Phthalo Green on its own because the colour is too intense and pure. If you have that colour, you can create a swatch and compare that with all other things you see in nature and notice how jarring Phthalo Green (and Blue) can be.

That is curious... I also have a Van Gogh pallet like yours and my Chinese White also foams and creates bubbles like that.

Thanks for the review. I have a 15 half-pan plastic box of Van Gogh colors that's really handy. I do think some of the colors are a bit too muted and some are more opaque than I'd like, like the Yellow Ochre shown in the video. They really are very good paints for the money, though, crazy cheap considering there are worse "artist-grade" sets out there. I haven't used the white at all so I can't comment on the bubbles, but I have a tube of Schmincke Phthalo Green that has the same issue. I wonder what causes that.

ihy oh I'm thinking to buy the Van gogh 12+3extra colors, watching the reviews & swatches, still can't choose between them and white nights 12 set. Seems that van gogh are much brighter, whether the white nights are a professional line...are you satisfied with the quality of your paints? Can they give dark enough combinations? Thanks.

Runagate check out their Dusk colors. They are beautiful granulating colors. I believe that only the Dusk violet is not completely lightfast

Runagate , Rembrandt, the big sister of Van Gogh, also makes the Dusk colors AND another watercolor group called Chameleon. They are different then the interference colors. I haven’t seen them for sale, but they are included on the Royal Talens website. I was all set to spend a fortune on Daniel Smith and then I saw those gorgeous Dusk colors and got distracted. Good luck. At least Van Gogh won’t break the bank as badly as Daniel Smith.

+Piefje P You can remove the base plate that holds all the pans. If you do that, you can fit in more pans but there won't be any individual holders so you have to stick your pans to the bottom, probably with some blutack. Or you can just get the set from Prima Marketing which leaves space between the rows, but same thing you have to put some blutack to stick the extra pans down. If you want opaque colours, it's better to use gouache. Winsor and Newton is a good brand

I'm new to watercolors and I'm wondering if I should buy this set or the Koi Sakura watercolors I'm usually on the go so I think Koi works for me better but the colors in the Van Gogh line looks nice and I'm torn. Should I get Koi or Van Gogh? Also I love your channel! ❤

I don’t have much experience with Van gogh so I can’t say much. Other other two brands are good value for money

Я приглядываюсь к покупке White Nights. Неужели хуже Котмана ? Я недавно начал свой путь скетчинга с Винзор Ньютон Котман, но они слишком тусклые. Иногда это хорошо иногда нет. Выбираю между сетом Питерских или Ван Гогом. Как я понял самые самые это Daniel Smith , Holbein но там цены облачные.

I’m just a beginner and want to upgrade my watercolors. In your opinion, should I buy Cotman (or the proffesional Winsor&Newton) or Van Gogh? I live in The Netherlands so Van Gogh is a bit cheaper but Cotman is also affordable :) I’d love to hear from you!

I find that Cotman last longer.

With this specific watercolor, I noticed that after mixing the colors this white sediment settles out of the paint and if my brush ends up picking it up it masks what ever I layerd down underneath. Have you noticed anything like this with watercolor? I had the paint for over a year and then suddenly they all started doing this.

I love the way you said "red". Always enjoy your vids especially your reviews. You have more paint sets than....certainly more than I do; still working on putting together my first and have noticed that trying to buy an empty watercolor palette is a huge chore in that there aren't any real art stores near me so I have to go through the online stores. I've noticed that the metal one are more expensive than plastic. Which do you prefer, plastic or metal and what is your favorite set?

+Bev Roberts I like both metal and plastic boxes. If you want to buy an empty box, get the Prima Marketing Tropicals set or the Pebeo 12 half pan watercolour set (harder to find). They are more affordable. They come with paints and if you don't like the quality, you can remove the paints and reuse the pan. Thanks so much for providing that hotlink. I tried once or twice before to go to the parkablogs website and got an error message each time, so I just assumed it was the difficulties between our respective countries. But it let me in today. Loved your review there and found that watercolor set/box on Amazon here...I added it to my wish list that now has 44 items on it! I do really like that metal box and a small palette will be very useful when Autumn rolls around. I live in the countryside with lots and lots of trees, shrubs, etc. and I'm looking forward to "arting" outside. In the meantime, I need to get much better at drawing before I crack open the paints!

Hello Teoh, Would you say Van Gogh has a large drying shift? I was shocked to see van gogh's color mixing chart after seeing your original swatch (in big rectangular blocks) when it was still wet. Can you show them both on the same screenshot? Thanks!

+sands in my boots Most watercolour dry lighter so it's not surprising. I don't find the colour shift too significant. One thing I realized is, I use up the paints quite fast compared to other better quality paints.

Would you rather recommend these or the white nights watercolors? 🤔

Thanks for posting this! I want to try to copy that color chart. PS does anyone else dig out the Chinese White, and put something else in place, like a nice dark dioxine-style purple? I've tried using Chinese White, and I always end up with mud. I don't know what I do wrong. (Maybe I just need to take a gouache painting class.)

White is opaque. When mixed with other colours, it's going to make those colours pastel-like and pale. And if you continue to mix with other colours, it's very easy to turn muddy. You should replace the white with some other colours. A good replacement choice will be any primary colour, red, yellow or blue.

No. I use it to make true neutral greys and pastels. It’s a current fad not to have a white or black.

Can anyone tell me about the toxicity of the paint? I got my own van gogh set today (thanks to this review) and noticed that the Chinese white has a warning label for aquatic life. I guess I shouldn't let them go down the drain when I clean my brushes/pallet, but how am I supposed to handle them or clean them otherwise after using them?

+DubiousTemp You can just clear them as you would with non toxic paint. Don't think they are going to do much damage unless they are dumped in huge quantity or ingested.

When I paint I make sure I wipe some of the color off the brush onto a paper towel. I do that before rinsing the brush in a water cup. This way less paint gets poured down the drain in your dirty water cup when you're finished painting. Phthalo green and blues are also toxic to fish because of the copper content, so even though its not toxic to humans it can be harmful for water species. I try to put as little down the drain as possible.

I'm not sure I understand what the difference between transparent and not transparent when referring to the colors.

Transparent means you can see your lines underneath. For example, tea is transparent and allows you to see to the bottom of the cup, coffee with milk is not transparent. Transparent watercolor work like tea, while non transparent ones work like coffee with milk.

hi teoh, im a newbie and there are just too many watercolor brands out there n it gets overwhelming. what would you recomm. on a watercolor pan/cake set (professional/artist quality) , i dont really have a budget, i just want to get the best thing n never have worry about buying another set or upgrade. im planning on buying the Faber-Caste Albrecht Durer Artist Watercolor Pencils, what are you thoughts on these pencils? or do you have other recomms.? thanks :D

I usually recommend people to get the brand that's easiest to get because when you run out of paint it's easier to replace. The page you go to has all the reviews. That's too manmy to look through unless you're looking for a specific brand. If you want to go for pan sets, then you can get Winsor & Newton Artist Grade, Schmincke Horadam (not the Akademie) or Sennelier. They are all good artist quality. Very comparable to one and other so it would come down to price. I recommend getting tubes and making your own set though. It's more economical, and fun. If you are from USA, I recommend the Mission Gold 9 Tube set for under USD $30. Then you can just get your empty box and pans. Total will be under USD $60. The amount of paint you get from that set is equivalent to 3 times a normal box set. www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-mission-gold-watercolors-9-tube-set Just add a tube of French Ultramarine to make the Mission Gold set more versatile. See if you can get the empty metal box and pans from eBay. @@maggiearmenta8626 If you want white, it's either Titanium White or Zinc White. Titanium White is more opaque. Buff Titanium is another colour.

Remove pan, bend the small metal holder, push pan back in

Tubes. More economical. 15ml tube can refill a half pan 7 times.

+Mila Plasma Van Gogh? They are still considered student grade. So you do have to use more of the paint to get the intensity required

Hey Teoh, I would like to invest in Rembrandt watercolors but I don't want to make a mistake. Is Van Gogh good enough in comparison to Rembrandt? What do you think?

can you compare cotman china version vs something similar price?

I find that Van Gogh gets used up quite fast. Cotman seems to last longer.

+Rebecca Nelson Probably, yeah. But it's still very good paints. I usually differentiate student from artist from how easy it is to mix muddy colours and how fast the colours lose their vibrancy when mixed. Van Gogh performs quite well in that respect.

If you're really going to insist on some "cheap" student grade water colors, these (Talens Van Gogh) are - IMO - the ones to use. Not just because they're decent, but also because they use the real things, i.e. the actual pigments which are those durable ones used in quality artist material. And they paint better than W&N Cotman, the main competition. But why bother? Use the real stuff: W&N Artist water colour or Talens Rembrandt water colour. Schmincke Horadam are also good, but I don't like them, because they seem too mild mannered and over engineered. W&N are more true to the individual pigment properties and have that archaic water color feel.

+Vermiliontea I find that I have to use a lot of paint from Van Gogh and I've used up this set much faster compared to other brands.

- Ah, yes. A very good point, and the reason I put "cheap" in a quote. But they paint well, for student grade. And if you're looking for something affordable, just to try out water color painting, then it doesn't matter if they don't last as long. But I certainly don't bother with anything else than Artist grade. It seems like wasted effort to use something else. I have to say though that I haven't tried Cotman for like 30 years, so it's very likely they've got better today. I wouldn't know.

Sennelier can also be an option. Here in Canada they sell a try us tin (with 5 tubes of 10ml each) for $21. Which is, in comparison, so much cheaper and these are professional watercolors known for being very transparent.

all those Cotman colors that have more granulation is because of how much filler is in them

The granulation comes from the weight of the pigment particles if I am not wrong.

Teoh Yi Chie you are correct but in colors like SE Lo Green Viridian colors that are not supposed to granulate but have heavy granulation it comes from all of the filler in the student grade paints

So are you just a watercolor artist? Are we ever going to see you use another medium other than watercolor, like gouache?

+Rain 008 I use mainly watercolour and ink. There are too many things for me to feature so it will take a while before I can get to things like gouache, coloured pencils, markers, paper.
