To address some of the issues Skallagrim had with this blade; We primarily avoid putting a razor edge on the majority of our blades except on request as we primarily sell to collectors and we have found it safer and simpler to produce sharper blades only upon request. The grip can be ordered with just leather, leather and wire, and a few other options; if you plan to wear gloves or gauntlets, the wire helps to prevent slipping in use, with bare handed use, ordering a blade without the wire is perfectly logical. As to how the pommel is attached, we weld them in place. As to the overall balance of our Scimitar, a heavier pommel can be used to move the point of balance further back towards the guard. (The smooth or faceted ball pommel options on the website are both slightly heavier the the hex pommel shown in this video.) As to the sheath, we build them in house, and if you would like us to attach a leather strap with a steel snap, that would be a very simple fix we'd be happy to accommodate. As to our slogan, Beyond Battle Ready, many blade shops either focus on building heavy duty functional blades, or beautiful artistic display pieces. We attempt to give you both, beautifully artistic functional weaponry. Please feel free to email us directly at info@sabersmith.com with any other questions we can help you with. We look forward to arming you.

Greetings, since the wire looks very appealing to the overall design: would it be possible to provide a leather hilt with a piece of embroidery to provide the same aesthetics on a smooth hilt for bare-handed use as well? A lot of eyes and fingers would probably apprechiate that a lot. ;) Just my 2 cents.

Scimatar's are very oddly weighted. Can be tricky getting the hang of them. The point of balance is usually right in the center of the sword and the broad, flat blade makes it difficult to keep them aligned without practice. They feel very clumsy when you're unused to one. Took me forever to get the hang of being able to juggle one.

The scimitar is designed like an axe (with much heavy at the end) to give more cinetic to the strike. It done to give big, long strikes in the battle, not for close fight

I have a very special feeling towards the scimitar. relating my time when Runescape was all the rave. My black Scimitar served me for two years straight. winning many a duel. I would then research the weapon after I stopped playing. t'was only when I actually held the weapon did I feel comfortable with it. when I knew that my sword preferences were all about the single edged. The sabers, katanas, cutlasses and others. So in short. The scimitar took my sword virginity

At the Renaissance Fair this year, I saw someone with this sword and scabbard. The sword had popped out of the scabbard while the person was walking, but they didn't notice. I recommend tying the scabbard with string to keep the sword in when at a fair.

Which Ren Fair were you at? All the ones that we attend require that all blades be ziptied. That's honestly probably why we've never added straps to hold the sheath closed. Every time we've sold one over the years, it immediately gets ziptied down.

I'd like to point out two things. 1) It is probably better that it isn't 1095 like Zombie Tools weapons - a blade this long and thin would be prone to breaking from 1095. 2) What I noticed is that the wrist on your leading hand went into "negative" during cutting. I am sure you'll understand what I mean, let me explain: Grab a stick, and start to lower it down. Past a certain point, your wrist feels over-extended and you can't exert much force from there. Now, this sword forces your hand into this positions early on in the cut by having a really deeply curved hilt. If you compare it to say, a really curved katana or messer, you can notice that those swords have an almost straight hilt. The reason is obvious - a chopping weapon needs stead hand support. THis weapon was made with chopping in mind, but was designed with a hilt that would suit lighter, more cut oriented weapons better. That is why, I think, it feels less comfortable in the hand, even thought the weight and the point of balance is actually pretty good for a desgnated chopper.

Dunno if anyone below mentioned it, but the small gaps at the dorsal and ventral edge of the guard are probably because they used a mill to cut the slot. If that's the case, then they over-cut a tiny bit and didn't bother with hand-filing to square. To get a perfect fit would require milling the slot slightly short of the proper length, and then hand-filing to square and correct length. It isn't anything major, just a cost saving measure.

I really like this sword. I usually like european longswords, but this is really good. You can even stab with it, I mean not as good as with a longsword, but still, the tip looks usable. And since it's a curved sword, it's probably very good at cutting, and due to the strong curve and the widening of the blade closer to the tip, it also probably has a lot of heft to it, which is something I also like. Definitely a very good sword, but not as good as the Albion Kriegsmesser.

It seems that those of you here on this page are craving sharper edges, while we've found through 20 years of actually making and selling swords that most customers don't want an actual razor edge. That's why I stated in the letter I sent with the blade, that dull training edges or razor edges are available upon request, not as the default.

It's a youtube channel btw if you haven't heard of it. Anyway, besides the fact that they always make impractical, unrealistic weapons (considering the source material), how good are they really? Just in terms of how much they seem to know, and how good their technique is? Do they seem experienced, or do they seem more to just be a "gimmick-y thing"?

I feel like edge alignment would be more difficult because the way the blade flares out at the end and it's curve, the end must make the blade wobble a bit in your hand.

That's a pretty badass sword. I don't have much in my sword budget, but 5-600 is an attainable goal. I could see myself buying this.

7catstied2gether That's why we try to avoid making our standard swords too fancy. Focusing on a good quality sword that's also handsome, without over embellishing on the details allows us to continue offering them in the $300-$600 range primarily.

I think the edge alignment issue may stem partly from the fantasy inspired hilt of the blade. It looked a little too rounded for such a large sword.

Skalagrim, thanks for the videos! I like the sword,, but Iwould sharpen the back section of the sword from the tip back a good few inches, would lighten it a d make reverse cuts easier. I think the geometry of the handle in respect to the blade, you could unwrap it and heat and reshape the geometry? Just a thought 💙

When you talked about the warranty covering "normal sword use", would that include actual non-training use against living targets in combat, duel, self-defense etc. (as applicable to the legal environment)? Just curious given that peculiar wording.

John Francis Doe, yes. Although, I'm not sure if you actually used one for self defense, whether the police would let you keep it afterward. We've just learned over the years that saying we have an unconditional guarantee, just gets treated as a challenge and people will go out of their way to damage the blades, then want a replacement. We've added a bit of common sense to our warranty and are upfront about it. If you want to attempt to demolish a concrete building with your katana, we won't be sending you a free replacement, etc...

Please enlighten me. I thought scimitar was mainly weapon for horse rides. Thus it should be used in one hand. How two handed weapon could be used by riders? Would it be held in one hand when riding and in two hands why on foot?

Isn't the downward curvature of one side of the hand guard really dangerous because it would encourage your enemy's blade to slide down and hit your body on that side?

Good review Skall, just one question - if you had to hazard a guess, how much affect do you think your HEMA background colors your opinion on the handling and balance of this particular sword? Perhaps Matt Easton from scholargladiatoria could offer some insight on what the balance on this particular blade style, given his background of expertise (despite the fantasy design). From what I understand of it, the martial arts involving curved swords to this degree do vary in their usage, so perhaps your own HEMA background has some affect on the issues with edge alignment and the nimbleness you mentioned?

Are scimitars supposed to be big and heavy for heavy chopping, or light weight? I know in many fantasy books, games, etc, they are depicted as much lighter swords for dual wielding.

Swordfry, we've had customers over the years that have asked for both. This is a heavier variation, and our "saber" is similar to a lighter Scimitar.

Question: You say it's a historically-inspired fantasy blade, but it looks much like some of the two-handed headsmen blades I've seen that were used in the middle east for executions. Even today you see simialr blades used by ISIS for beheadings. Can you ellaborate on the diffrences between the two?

Very intimidating, Reminds me of the huge ass Scimitar in "Robin hood: Prince of Thieves" owned by Morgan Freeman. That scimitar looks like a younger brother version of the Robin Hoods Big Ass Scimitar but far more elegant looking.

Did you see Shadiversity's 4 part review on the movie? Man, he loves the movie but _did he take an issue with Azeem's sword!_ XD I wonder what he would think of *this* particular design, though. To an amateur like me, it looks a lot more functional.
