Review of Voodoo Lounge by The Rolling Stones

Музыка

Awaiting the new The Rolling Stones album Hackney Diamonds I am taking a closer look at the full discography of The Rolling Stones.
This series of videos has arrived in 1994 when The Rolling Stones release the album ‘Voodoo Lounge’. Looking back on it almost 30 years later; what does it sound like?

G'day @ Top 5 Records I hope your day is good. I was hoping you could answer a question for me about the Rolling Stones? I'm replacing a collection I had stolen forty years ago after which I gave up on vinyl as it broke me mentally. I was wondering what versions of the Rolling Stones pressings are the best to go after for sound quality? Cheers man I appreciate your time, thank you. By the way you do some really interesting videos love them.

Thanks for your comment! And I’m going to give as much info as I have, but; the info on best Rolling Stones pressings is not as open and often debated as for example the catalogue of The Beatles or Pink Floyd is. And; I haven’t listened to all the pressings, for example I did a video about Let It Bleed comparing a 1st UK mono to a stereo one in which someone advices me to try the 1984 pressing. I haven’t found that nor will I because I’m happy with my first UK’s. Also; from Stones fans I sometimes get the most weird of advice on pressings; I’ve heard people who like the Mofi Sticky Fingers (which is obviously a crappy unbalanced too heavy on bass mastering) or people being positive about the Half Speed Abbey Road masters (who for example completely messed with Exile on Main St. And are incredibly expensive. My advice is; The Rolling Stones Mono box, which has been reprinted and contains all the Mono albums in excellent state and quality. If you’re not into that I would do the following; From their 1964 debut to Between The Buttons; get UK pressings from the ‘60s and ‘70s in mono with the original stampers (these numbers can be found on discogs). From Their Satanic Majesties Let it Bleed; try to get original UK stereo pressings. Sticky Fingers: 1st German (1st choice) or 1st UK (2nd choice) with TML in the deadwax. Goats Head Soup, It’s Only Rock n Roll, Black and Blue; UK or US pressings with STERLING in the deadwax. Some Girls; 1st US, 1st UK or orange Dutch. The ‘80s; I believe as long as they are STERLING mastered you’re okay. I do enjoy the US pressing quality on Emotional Rescue. From the ‘90s onward; not much choice. Originals are rare and I’m not a fan of the Half Speed Mastering. I switched to CD’s here… Hope this will be of some help!

I love this album, even though it suffers from cd bloat. “I Go Wild” and “Brand New Car” are the only tracks I would’ve taken off. Without them it would’ve been an A minus listening experience. Grade: B+
