Review of The Hammerhead Karoo Cycling Computer

Review of The Hammerhead Karoo Cycling Computer
Buy the Hammerhead Karoo here (Affiliate): bit.ly/2qlKNRe
A couple of weeks ago I released a film where I unboxed a Hammerhead Karoo Cycling Computer. In this film, I do a full review of the said Hammerhead Karoo.
According to Hammerhead themselves, the Karoo is the next generation of cycling computers but what makes it so different and, furthermore, what makes it special compared to other brands of cycling computers such as Garmin and Wahoo?
I go through all of the main features of the Karoo, including its ride metrics and its navigation, plus a few other essential pros and cons of this new generation of cycling computer.

Excellent review Leonard. The turn by turn navigation was a bit brief but from what I see could I assume it is like the Wahoo with a chevron line across the map screen? Just another thing with battery life. Mobile phone screens are the biggest energy usage. I have been using an iPhone7 for the last few years following routes with turn by turn navigation, airplane mode and keeping the screen off until I need to see the metrics. Battery in good weather has been up to 20 hours like this. I say good weather because when it gets too cold the battery literally dies within hours. Because the Karoo is based on a mobile phone platform with touchscreen (another energy drain) is it possible to run it with the screen off until you wake it? Or at least have it run in a low brightness setting. Keep up the excellent reviews my friend.

You can use a Garmin mount, but the tether that Karoo provides, is not elastic like what Garmin offers. There are also no instructions on how to install the tether. You need to go to the website to figure it out. I will spoil it and tell you to remove the mounting base and install it under the base. But don't expect the allen key provided with the unit to loosen that mount screw. The quality of these allen keys is very poor, and you risk stripping the fastener if you use them. My point is that the tether needs to go around the handle bar when riding off road. Karoo wants you to mount it to the out front mount only. They refuse to offer an elastic version. This means you need to purchase a $35 mount for each bike you use it on. I added a very stout rubber band to the tether, and then can use my Garmin mount that is already on the mountain bike. The other issue is the charge port plug. It has no tether which means it will get lost, and dirt and water will get in to the charge port. That is another poor design feature. In their defense, they do provide a spare. I just can't believe they would overlook such simple design features.

Nice review - if my garmin 520 ever kicked the bucket, I would certainly give the Karoo a thought. At the 9:00 ish into the video you are talking about being able to download maps, but on the screen itself, you can see the likes of the entire North America being 28Gb, but the Karoo showed having 3.3Gb used of 9.9Gb. Is the internal memory up gradable, via SD card for eg? No sounds is a bit of a pain, but not a dealbreaker - the only bit I think they miss a trick with, is being able to connect to your phone to show incoming calls/texts, or even sync using the phones 4G etc.

  • @jollygoodvelo

    @jollygoodvelo

    4 жыл бұрын

There is no way of upgrading the memory as far as I am aware. The whole of the US would be 28GB but it gets broken down further into individual states which are much smaller.

Hi Leonard, Great review. My old Garmin 800 is showing its age and I am looking at something new. Hammerhead, Yahoo and Garmin all have strengths and weaknesses, but none of them are great. If a cell phone (Android or Apple) had connectivity to the sensors, they would become the perfect cycling computer as the battery even lasts as long as the cycling computers. Galaxy lasts about 15 hours if using it with ridewithgps and a small external battery can extend that for as long as you want. Hopefully, someone will eventually provide the complete package so that we only need one device, however, I imagine many manufacturers don't want to see that day.

Karoo can't fix this with a software update and will need to come out with a second gen in order to offer sound. I'm not sure why they didn't design this into the unit but it's a deal breaker for me. Did rain/water affect the screen? For example, my phone is waterproof but when rain or sweat falls on it (even with a case) it can affect the touch screen functionality. It sometimes interprets drops as touches and starts doing unwanted things or stops responding to actual touches until the liquid is removed.

At 9 mon, mount broke on road ride, no provocation. Tethered, attached to part that breaks off. Got smashed on road. Mount is overstressed for mass of the device , amplified by the size which increases the lever arm and stress. Big battery needed to run the beautiful screen. Lack of sound can be addressed by small $10 clip on BT speaker. Sensor drop and loss of ride data , not zero but prolly no worse than other brands. Good mapping, Integrates well with strava, Di2 and garmin radar. Nice folks to deal with. Cell connection and Android app side loading remain undeveloped. For me , if my phone had ANT+, it would do everything I need, and BT sensors less expensive than a replacement.

Good review. I was off put by original concern over fiddelyness, that you set straight. With age, the complexities of obsolescence, updates, quirky connectivities and feature creep have become very offputting, and this device appears to have very well thought out design. I mean, Tognazzini and Norton were what? 1985, Garmin? If I ever glance at a screen longer than a parasec , while riding, before getting off the bike, I'm going back to static trainers. My understanding of lithium batteries , is that storage should be at 80%, which is why they are received at less than full charge. I ,too, find that frustrates my eager unboxing, but should not detract, otherwise, as it protects the battery when stored, giving longer life.

Am 7 months out after getting one on Black Friday 2019 at a very good price from the factory . Quite happy with it. It is a chunky piece and I am not sure what advantage that conceals ( the soon to be seen 2.0 will be smaller) But battery life is OK, and features and configurablity are quite good. Not having a prior bike computer , I can't compare to the 520 I was contemplating, but it meets my need well. It needs Strava or something like it to really display results. It has good connectivity. As every one says, it needs a speaker, but I really don't need TBT nav or a phone in my ear. The customer service guys at Hammerhead have been great, and karoousers.org is a good bunch for help and advice. With the $4m venture capital they got last year, I am looking forward to seeing where this goes. Oh, and Tognazzini and Norton were the guys that designed the mac 1.0 interface. I am a fan of good design/UX.

Currently, the HammerHead are offering a Black Friday discount. The discounted price is a rather affordable €250,- or equivalent. Despatch within the EU is free of charge, as is in North America. It isn't perfect (my pet peeve being the limited storage, as you may remember from my comments on your first Karoo video). I'm also not a big fan of the screen texture - it doesn't feel as pleasant to the touch as smartphone screens are, but that's an inevitable flaw of low-reflectivity glass / plastic. Another issue I lament - is its limited support for offline routing (this is an important feature, HammerHead, please, do make sure it is implemented in the the next firmware update). Overall, it's better than any Garmin unit, the Sigma ROX 12.0 and all Wahoos. A steal at €250,- (I wish, I bought Mine during the discount)! :/

@@jollygoodvelo There's more: for instance, one can't search a location by street name and number, POI, longitude and latitude, etc. on the device; one can't choose a point (let alone a few) on the way to a destination directly on the device; one can't enquire for POIs in the vicinity of the chosen point; choosing a location to navigate to (without a use of a computer) won't work if the point in question is a couple of hundreds of kilometres away from one's current location, and more. Still, I agree that overal it is a good device, perhaps among the best (at present, anyway) - but it does miss a hell of a lot of both software and hardware features. Hope, they implement these and many more in the near future.

The Karoo did initially have some bugs but all those that affected me have been addressed in fortnightly software updates. They did have some issue with the mount breaking but this was addressed some time ago - they sent out (free) a new mount. I use the Karoo primarily for navigation which works very well. I can't think what you are doing that doesn't work - perhaps you could elaborate on your issues. Prior to getting the Karoo, I had 4 different Garmin devices which had a variety of software issues, physical device deficiencies, I never got an update and you had to pay $100 for mapping in areas other than where you bought it. Perhaps you had better experiences than me from Garmin. I see other devices (Garmin, Bryton, Magellan / Mio, Wahoo etc) being used by other cyclists. What I don't see is anyone claiming his device is absolutely fabulous. They all seem to have their detractors.
