lmao that is hilarious that they said single pigment colors make for more lightfast paints! So glad you are pulling them up on that one. Thank you also for the shoutout!

What I do for my large swatch cards is to put them on a large office supplies binder ring. I put the hole on top of the card where the mass tone of the color is. When I am comparing colors I take out the card put the hole on top of my reference photo. This helps me to see if the color is the right tone. Using this method for color matching is great for us beginners that are just learning color mixing.

Oh hey! I actually finally just ordered a triad of PWC since I’ve wanted to try them for a while and, as you may remember, I got some pastels from Jackson’s for that pastels class I want to make. I’ve got a set of their “professional” paints so it’ll be interesting to see the comparisons. And heck yeah, call ‘em on their crap! I feel like watercolors have become a weirdly elitist medium and we have so many “rules” (like no black or white! Gasp!) and so many truths, like single mixed pigments and convenience colors have no place in the world and are something to apologize about as they’re inferior. It’s nonsense!!! That brown red is such a pretty color!

Great review, Eve! I think you've already discovered that this a company you need to be careful with. As I've written elsewhere, any company that names their student-quality paint line 'Professional', is perfectly content to confuse their customers. PWC certainly has something to offer the artist - but you need to know your pigments, eh? They have so many unknown ones (not even listed at handprint.com), and also pigments _known_ to be fugitive. Did you notice that they have 4 tubes that contain PR83, Alizarin Crimson? This is known to be fugitive. S.H. rates them either 'Normal' lightfastness, or 'High' lightfastness. Yeah, right. None of those 4 are called Alizarin Crimson; no, they have another tube called Alizarin Crimson. But it doesn't contain any PR83!! :^D!! Lmao. Nonetheless, if you choose carefully, you can get some good deals. I've bought about ten PWC over the last year, and am happy with them. I have their PY129, PBk31, PG7, and a bunch of earths like PBr7, PR101 & PY42, and I'm happy with them. Their 'Umber' (not Burnt or Raw) is very similar to D.S.'s German Greenish Umber. Terre Verte (Yellow Shade), a PBr7 variant, is a new favourite of mine.

Thank you, I have a few colours from this line some of which have more lightfast pigments, I do have the indigo which is PB66 and it is lovely, I'll have to use it in a sketchbook or scan the finished artwork.

I have the Waffle Flower stamps as well. I have the big one to make swatches for my pallets and the pigment one. I am glad to see I am not the only one that only uses part of the information on the stamp. I also added a black line on the stamped pigment cards for opacity. Love the video, have been wondering about Shinhan paints.

I was looking for the paints to granulate some. These were very smooth yet beautiful in a fall theme. I like when paints have some granulation in them. Your charts and card references are great! It was a great review!

I have that Sap Green, PG8. It's my only Shinhan (so far,) and even though I know the lightfastness is not great, it's such a gorgeous color. At the same time, I had picked up 3 tubes of Mijello, and one Turner. While I didn't like the Turner AT ALL, I love the Mijello. So I'd be more likely to get additional Mijello.

Thank you for the review! The range of colors you used are very pretty, and I specifically love all of the Brown Red mixes. I considered buying a set of these paints a while back, as I've seen some artists use them and I was impressed with how vibrant the colors are, but the lightfastness issue made me hold back. I don't use sketchbooks often, and I didn't want to spend that much for a set that I would never use on art I want to display. I honestly still yearn for them though, and can't kick them out of my amazon wishlist quite yet :)

I'm just in love with their PG8 Sap Green! I've had it for a while now, and I think it's become my favorite sap green. It has this transparency and glow that I just can't explain. And it mixes amazingly with just about anything. It is however a bit bright for a sap green, so if I need it to be a bit more earthy, I mix a tiny bit of Schmincke's Transparent Orange PO71 with it, just stunning. I haven't tested for lightfastness though, so I don't know how well this formulation holds up over time. Surprisingly, it's completely different from the White Nights version. PWC also has a PG8 Hookers Green which is closer to White Nights version, but theirs is very lackluster, and I didn't love it as much as I did their sap green or the White Nights darker version. I wonder how they processed them to appear so differently. I also wonder if you considered making your own PG8. How awesome would that be? When I try out new brands, I too like to go for pigments I don't already own in other brands, so the pigments you chose, would have been exactly the ones I would have bought myself. I was very curious about that indigo, as it's the original one. It looks great :)

I liked the cute painting you did with the colors you picked out, even if the paper isn't behaving well. I take issue with their statement about mixed colors not being very vibrant or lightfast as well. It feels like they're taking a jab at brands like Holbein who have a lot of mixed colors. Yet I feel they're just fine where vibrancy and lightfastness is concerned. I probably won't be getting any of the pwc paint. My range right now is pretty filled up as it is with MGraham, DanSmith, VanGogh and a touch of Holbein. 😅

That's a really pretty combination of colours. Pity about the lightfastness (and I agree, that is a completely ridiculous claim that single pigments have anything to do with lightfastness, thanks for calling that out)

What a lovely little autumn palette. ^^ I'm glad you made a point of clearing up the confusion around lightfastness and pigment mixes. Overall, I have been really enjoying handmade and artisinal watercolors recently, so I'll probably keep saving up for more of those, but I enjoyed learning a bit about this brand and seeing them in action. Thanks for the great video! :)

I haven’t tested my Pentalic yet, will be doing over the weekend. I have tested the Hahnemuhle and I love it. Even though it buckled it dried completely flat and the paper texture is ok and they are better than Moleskin IMHO. What issue are you finding with the Pentalic Eve?

Yikes. Should we avoid mixing or glazing our paints? :-) Do the pigments fight each other or something? PG8 is also not too lightfast, as well as PB66 as you mentioned.

Thank you so much for the great review and video. I’ve seen such mixed reviews for this brand that I think I might just avoid them... The colors look beautiful, but it seems that its difficult to layer and glaze colors, and I work in a lot of thin layers to build up form and color! Some people love their intense colors and vibrancy, but most of the positive reviews I have seen come from beginners and hobbyists whom might not have issues with lightfastness, glazing and layering, etc. Again, thank you so much for the great video.

Thank you! :) In that sense, you might be better served by brands like Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Schmincke, W&N Pro, etc. That's a great part of having all this available, there's something for everyone (even if it's overwhelming and one might want EVERYTHING!) hehe!

Hi I just discovered your channel today and I really like your video. I have a question, have you tried the old Holbein watercolors named holbein irodori antique artist watercolours? they stopped producing them and I am looking for a replacement that have the same strong pigment and a bit opaque than the other brands.

Hi! I didn't know they stopped producing them, what a bummer :( I have a few colors of the range and it was a long-term dream to get the full set, but I guess I'll have to put that dream in the bin! Have you tried regular Holbein watercolors? You could also try their gouache and use it like watercolors.

So which one of their paints lines is actually professional? I have wanted to get some but want to make sure & get the professional ones. Any information anyone could give me would be appreciated. I know that you had a lot of concerns with these paints so it makes me question if they are professional or not. Btw, I love your KZread name. I’m an artist & cat fan as well.

I recently picked up a few of these paints through a sale at Deserres and ... they're nice, sure, but the fact they use such strange pigments in some of their paints and then label known lightfast pigments as being "lightfast" is kinda sketchy. Thank you for discussing lightfastness in regards to this brand! And also discussing their bizarre description of their paints. I don't want to assume they're purposefully misleading consumers because maybe something is being lost in translation. I hope, anyway.
