I love irony of the fact that often paints with word 'permanent' in their name and not permanent at all.

You need a cold red for purple... the blue is less important... warm red always gives me grayish muted purple... I actually use quin crimson, it's almost a magenta, if you need red add a touch of Indian yellow and it goes back to red

Thanks for the review Teoh! I've heard a lot of confusion about the different lines as well so thanks for clearing that up. Interesting about the purples. I find that phthalo blue can make gorgeous purples with cool reds so I'd guess the culprit here is the red. The yellow is really lovely, and that black is intense!

Glad you reviewed these paints. They're very affordable. I have a lot of their previous variation of this set(SWC) and some of their PWC paints. My lightfastness tests have all been pretty good, only issues with some of their reds, so I think they're very good for their price. Also, I love silver brushes, I hope you're liking them too!

I have watched so many of your videos lately and you actually helped me pick my first good watercolor set, a cotman travel box with 14 half pans. I'm looking at upgrading to a set of grumbacher academy tubes when I can.. Do you have a review on that brand? I checked and havent seen one but i would love to hear your opinion on it.

I've been using PWC paints lately and so far I'm very pleased with the results, Shinhan's permanent rose, for example, seems to have the same performance as the W&N artist's one, and both use PV19. However, it's good to point out many PWC colors have low lightfastness despite being rated as having "good resistance to light". In the case of the pigments PY3 and, PY81 and PY83, the handprint site states the problem with them (at least with PY3 and PY83) is that their actual lightfastness varies depending on the manufacturer (Daniel Smith, as reputed as it is, uses PY83 in their cadmium hues, for example). Shinhan's reds assortment is also tricky, currently there are a handful of good red paints, like their permanent red, permanent rose, pyrrole red (recently added) and the cadmium colors, on the other hand they lack any strong and lightfast oranges other than their cadmium red orange. The problem is not that the brand still uses fugitive pigments like PR83, but the fact they give it a high lightfastness rating. As for the brand's blues selection, I think they're only missing indanthrone blue to have a very good assortment. Now, look at the prices, even their cadmium and cobalt colors are affordable, and my guess is that they can do that by using ultra cheap pigments on some ot their other paints. In any case I think it's good to bring attention to these details, maybe if the brand starts seeing a lot of feedbadk (or complaints) about their products they would start implementting changes, just like happened with Mijello's watercolors a few years ago.

When they named their student-grade line, 'Professional', I think Shinhan shot themselves in the foot. Because anyone looking for artist-grade paints - if they get fooled once by the 'Pro' name, they'll be pissed-off, and will resent Shinhan. However, if you know what pigments you like and trust, and carefully choose tubes from the PWC line, you'll probably be pleased at the value for your $. Just watch out for colours with unusual pigments and weird blends - many contain fugitives that may colour-shift or fade after a few months. Handprint.com is your friend! Don't buy the sets of pre-picked tubes unless you only work in sketchbooks, or don't care what your colours look like years from now.

Nice review, I haven't tried them yet myself but they are available open stock from Jackson's art supplies UK who do ship to most countries. The 32 Set PCW is listed at £88 and the 24 Set £70. The individual tube prices are quoted from £3.60 but I could only see Tier 1 (Series A) colours from £4.70 per tube on a 5 Tier range that goes up to (Series E) at about £10.50. The prices still seem pretty good though. They seem to do some interesting colours in the pink and violet range, that may interest botanical painters - also two "Skin tone-ish" colours (Jaune Brilliant and Jaune Brilliant 2) same as Holbien I believe... but not something I have come across in most European brands.

If you buy a cool red and a cool blue you can get a better violet and for cool red I love Quinacridone rose or magenta--but dull violets are usually ok for landscapes. The Cerulean Blue here is PB35 Cobalt Stannate which is somewhat opaque and granulates, a favorite pigment. Thanks for showing the quality of these paints, very interesting.

I haven't tried Shinhan myself but I'm very curious. Nowadays people often refer to the Handprint site about paints being fugutive, and that might be correct. But have someone actually done a lightfastness test themselves? There are lots of pigments that Handprint doesn't list, so what do we think about these? Are they no-no because Handprint doesn't say yes? And no-no because they are cheaper stype paints than for example Sennelier, with a long interesting history? Anyway, great review Teoh! :)

As a brand, Shinhan doesn't have any strong mid-cool yellows. They use pigments like PY1, PY3, & PY81 for their yellows, which are not lightfast. For their warm yellows, they do have cad yellow deep(PY35). Their reds are pretty weak in lightfastness as well since they use fugitive pigments like PR83, PR23, PR9 etc. The only lightfast reds they have seem to be quinacridones. Then again, if you're only going for the brand for it's cheapness and not it's lightfastness then go ahead and get it. I'm sticking to my misssion gold.

Thank you for your comment! I was wondering how Mission Gold stood up being compared to PWC. I have the 24 set of Mission Gold single pigment colors and very happy with them. But was thinking about PWC for an online class that uses this brand and she gets very pigmented colors. I had trouble getting my colors to be as bright (which I wanted for this project) and matching colors as I couldn't find the pigment numbers on her video. Which could be just a monitor/screen difference.

  • @q8asami988

i'm not an expert on paints and its components but i have tried enough brands to say this. shinhan watercolors appears unnaturally bright!!! almost too bright you'd think they are neon colors, and that is the main reason i didn't like them. if you paint in sketchbooks or just for fun then these paints are well and good. but i wouldn't be too trusty to paint finished pieces (you want to sell) with them.

  • @ryanpfeiffer42

i understand and know "pure pigments" very well Ryan, have you tried mijello? or sennelier watercolors? winsor and newton, holbien, maimeri, and rembrandt waterclors for example. those are also extremely bright, and pretty much any artists grade is very powerful and saturated. but these shinhan watercolors have an abnormal level of saturation, its impossible for those pigments to have that neon-like brightness. this is why i doubt they are as "pure" as they claim it to be. of course as i said, if you like painting in sketchbooks or don't really care about how lightfast the colors are, they are an excellent choice. i painted with them quite a lot before as well :)

@@q8asami988 Watching an artist use them (online), I thought she was using gouache, since I really had to work at my watercolors to get such a saturated color. (hardly using any water and letting a layer dry, then doing another wash over it) So I have been researching the PWC paints online. The Asian paints are a bit more saturated? I think... But what paints that came close to the PWC in this lady's tutorial is White Nights and Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors, and the Mission Gold at mass tone.
