Review: Cobra Steel kindjal - One of the best budget swords

Ойын-сауық

** Specifications ***
Overall length: 59 cm / 23.2 in
Blade length: 42 cm / 16.5 in
Blade thickness: 4 mm (no distal taper)
Point of balance: 8 cm / 3.1 in from the handle
Weight: 490 g / 1 lb
Price: 55 USD
** Pros / Cons **
+ Very affordable, high value for the money
+ Tough blade, handles hard use well
+ Lightweight, nimble blade
+ Comfortable and practical handle
- Comparatively soft steel, weak tip
- Mediocre edge retention
** Verdict **
This is easily one of the best sub-$100 swords I've seen, and really one of the only ones I can comfortably recommend. Most low-end swords are not functional, but this one offers a good no-nonsense design capable of standing up to abusive testing. It handles nicely, performs well (especially for thrusts), and has a better finish than I would normally expect at this price range.
Overall the Cobra Steel line seems like a great choice if you're looking for well made "tactical" swords that are easy on the budget.

Kindjal is the Circassian / Russian name. While it was essentialy used all around the Caucasus region, it was mostly the dominant secondary weapon / self defence weapon and symbol of status and consistent part of national attires in Georgia, where it is actualy called Khanjali. It's a pretty ancient weapon with some rough similarities with the Xiphos but moreso with the Roman Gladius.

Gentlemen, I will do my best to refrain from lengthy comments. An important aspect regarding use of a Caucasian dagger is a traditional, long-standing restriction on stabbing in intra-communal disputes as opposed to combat in a war against foreign enemies (Russians, Persians,Turks, etc.), unless deliberate killing in a blood-feud situation. Therefore two methods of application developed. One that survived the most is closely linked to dancing, folk sports games and similar in use to arranged / restricted duels that would not inflict a stabbing wound ( in other words limited to cuts and dubbs). I highly recommend fragments of a video on western Georgian dagger. Link as follows kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYak0aiTl925YaQ.html To compare, basic stabbing movements. Link as follows kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKOq1bGQcsKrnqw.html For those who are interested in shashka. Compare a dagger technique to fragments from a lecture on Georgian shashka or lekuri. It demonstrates an obvious relation between the use of cutting edge of a dagger and shashka in sporting and folk dance exercises. @@levishelm426 That is complete rubbish. Georgians and Armenians have been crafting such weapons since before antiquity, and from the Georgians in particular, or more precicely Colchians and Kartlians at the time, the Greek City States traded weapons that were described eerily similar to their later(!) Xiphos ( One may wonder why ) and even spears and axes, also tools and *lots* of jewelry. True, Georgians would later heavily borrow designs from Persians and Byzantinians due to temporary suzerainty. But to suggest an ancient weapon like the khanjali was invented by Circassians literal millenia later, is incredibly redicilous from an academic standpoint, let alone common sense. Circassians weren't even a thing until millenia after South and North Caucasians mixed, diverged and formed the dozens of ethnic groups now inhabiting the Caucasus. Same with clothing. Georgian traditional dress is ancient, except for the modern day Chokah with it's modern attributes. All Caucasians ethnic groups claim it was their own invention. Sure. Whatever. But what is ancient and Georgian, is ancient and Georgian. Period. No nationalistic flailing will change that. Smh.

I tested this sword until failure. I struck a tree that was about 9 inches thick from multiple angles, horizontally for the most part. I did it about 20 times and it bent the grip. I later started striking a log and the tang broke in the handle. It stood up very well. I highley recommend this sword.

I love cobra steel weaponry. I have the spartan Lakonia and the Greek falcata. I bought the lakonia around 7 years ago and it's gone through hell and back and just kept coming back for more. Used it so much that the rubber scales fell off and so I made my own hilt for it. Falcata has not seen a lot of use its fairly new. But they both take and hold a shaving edge quite well. I highly recommend these blades.

Meaning people around will not suspect your home has been attacked, meaning you can make the bodies of the intruder disappear. No body found, no killing, no legal problems.

Hey, Skallagrim! Love the reviews, and the extensiveness you dive into the weapons. I personally really enjoyed the scrutinizing of Fantasy weapons from a long, long time ago! If you're up to it, I have a weapon that I think would be fun to dive into. It's Juuzou's scythe from Tokyo Ghoul. He wields a large, two handed scythe made of Quinque Steel, which is a type of steel used on Ghouls, as other weapons types cannot harm them. As it isn't a true form of steel out there, compare it to what would be best for a weapon like his, which is nicknamed "Jason II" or more simply Jason. It was named after an S-Rated Ghoul, but that's getting beside the point. It has a sharp point, but no edge at all. It's a solid hunk of metal without a cutting edge, but the steel can still cut through Ghouls. For the context of the weapon, it makes sense, since the weapon can kill what it needs to. It does have a very sharp point, but the weapon is very large, and made of heavy steel, so how poorly would that handle, and what would be the prefered grip for it? I'm not asking for a video on it, but a simple glance, and a couple points on what doesn't make sense (I have a good idea of what...), and what does make sense. How difficult would a weapon like his be to handle (in general with two handed scythes, no matter how complex)? If you get the time to answer my questions or even glance at his weapon, that'd be amazing!

I have the Gladius (they call it a Lokonia) from Cobra, and it is without question one of the two the best swords/daggers that I've bought. If I had to get rid of all blades but one over 12", it would be down to this one and the Ontario Kukri (at about the same price point, too). The Gladius was an afterthought, a purchase in-store while I was picking up a heavy cavalry sabre. The sabre has spent more time in the scabbard than any sword I've ever bought, and the Gladius gets taken out and used fairly often. I see no reason to suspect that the tang stops before the end of the handle, but if you want to be sure, the rubber handle of the Gladius is sandwiched rubber, not an overmold like this one.

First of all, very nice review and all. While I dislike the notion that I have to purchase accessories or have to modify a new product to make it better. Although in this case, I'd make an exception due to the low price and create a new sheath or scabbard from kydex, leather or pvc pipe. For tactical or defensive purposes, it needs a versatile and secure method of carry and easy withdrawal.

I own one of these. Excellent little blade, more than worth the price. Self defense, zombies, test cutting, etc. My only gripe, if you could call it that, would be that the pommel (which IS 3/4 tang) came loose inside the rubber handle. I'm not actually sure if it came that way or if I did it during a test cut gone awry. The rubber of the grip holds the pommel firmly in place anyway, but if I try to turn the pommel it moves. Not a problem as far as handling goes, I just wish it were full tang.
