Cobra Steel Lakonia | Review | Kult of Athena

Order this blade here: www.kultofathena.com/product/...
The latest in the Windlass Cobra Steel line is this survival knife based on the deadly Spartan Short Sword. The blade on the Lakonia was shorter than other classical Greek swords and the Spartans said it was to bring them ”one step closer to the enemy.” Hard rubber scales on a full profile tang. Includes a leather scabbard.

Can you do another review of the Cobra Steel line now that they're stainless steel, and no longer carbon steel? I was going to get one, but when I found out they switched from carbon to stainless, I decided to hold off until I see newer reviews for the stainless blades.

Billy Heaning I'd stay away from them personally. Leave stainless to knives.

there's also the fact that Spartans LOVED their spears even more than the average hoplite and also had single-edged swords as an option. BUT question for anyone here, does anyone have the kopis and/or falcata in this line? if so, which do you have and which do you prefer? I've been debating about which one to get. Please and thank you for any info!

just how flexible is this thing? is it heat treated? that handle seems really blocky. how does it feel in the hand, and how would a rubber like that hold up to sandpaper to mold it down into a more curved ergonomic shape?

Mill bastard file will remove the sharp edges on the blocky handle. Washing with soap and water helps with the smell. Soft steel, but that may mean it is less likely to break. Buy it as a backup weapon, not as an expensive substitute for a machete. Should work on soft vines, etc.

hey, quick question. i have a little bigger hands, is the handle of this sword big enough for large hands ? the windlass qama handle was kinda disappointing because its too small for my hand. i hope you can help me, thank you.

  • @AsterixKearn

    @AsterixKearn

    7 жыл бұрын

It should be fine. The Qama has both a slightly shorter handle and also has those nubs on the handle that tend to get in the way, this one doesn't. Worse case scenario you can also wrap it to make the grip thicker if it's still too small.

Nice review Tom. Nice blade. Economical and good 'nuff. Demoed its capabilities well and went the extra step and did some torture testing. Sweet. I see no negatives whatsoever. Question, will KOA be releasing any Devil's Edge made European designs? (Long bastard or arming swords? falchions? messers?) Really would like to see this happen. Thanks

i wouldn't really call it a short sword. more like a dagger. most knives go all the way up to 10-12". i really duno where dagger, short swords, and "standard" sized swords come in, but i know daggers are smaller than short swords yet longer than knifes. and this is barely larger than a large outdoor knife if that's only 14".

I have this one and it is a sturdy blade no doubt, holds up great against all kinds of abuse, but it is not designed as a machete and though it will work it takes a lot of effort on the users part due to the thrusting design. Great sword to carry in case of pigs though and as a machete in a pinch.

Indeed, they are kind of an issue here in FL and although they generally go the other way, a mother with a litter of piglets can be quite aggressive.

I have this blade, tough to say the least and I would want to be on stabbing end of it that's for sure considering that's what the design is really meant for, it stays next to my bed along my pistol and extra mag just in case, one piece of advice though don't keep it in the scabbard it will rust badly for some reason even if oiled, the scabbard must be coated with something that does not agree with the steel.

The Kult of Athena's website warns against storing carbon steel blades in their leather scabbards because of the rusting problem. For that reason, my Windlass Raptor (awesome blade!) is stored beside its scabbard. I kind of wish there was an option to upgrade to a wood core (or some other material that won't damage the blade, not leather!) scabbard fitted for each weapon; I'd happily shell out the $$ for the upgrade.

Thinking about it some more, does anyone know if the plastic used by 3D printers is safe for long-term contact with steel blades? Would scabbards with a 3D printed plastic core, wrapped in leather (because let's face it, leather has its appeal) resolve the "do not store in the scabbard" issue? It occurred to me after looking at the scabbard for the Lakonia that it would be fairly simple to print out a core in two halves, and leverage the rivits to bind the halves together, while still concealing the plastic within leather.

14 inch blade, historically accurate. In the world of short swords it is on the short end of the type.

Yep my friend , this design was developed when Spartans where still using bronze. So if they made them any bigger they would be impossible to wield for a long time.Their war smiths made mass production of them by just casting them in molds , so it was also and easy weapon to make. They where called xiphos(sword)not lakonian short sword and they where popular all around Greece. Later in the iron age kopis took over , gear changed to a more light version of mail and shield got smaller adapting the more nibble fighter style that Kelts introduced by invading north and central Greece before they where driven out of Greece. Although they never made it to peloponese where Spartans had their city state and allies they where surely influenced by the new gear and what it brought to the battlefield much later that the rest of the of Greeks of course , you know how head strong Spartans are and how reluctant to change their ways.
