Review: 2014 Shelby GT500 - Better than the new one?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I review this 2014 Shelby GT500, the last of the manual transmission GT500s. With 662 hp from a big 5.8L supercharged V8 and a curb weight a couple hundred pounds less than the S550 GT500, the 2013-2014 GT500s manage to be barely any slower than the new one, even with the manual, showing just how impressive these were back in 2013. This one has a few light mods to help it do about 660 WHP, likely meaning over 700 hp at the crank. Also impressive is the fact that this one has over 80,000 miles on it and it's still going strong, another testament to the engineering of these last S197 GT500s. The 13/14 GT500 has several things over the new one. 1) Manual transmission 2) Approx. 300 pounds lighter 3) Avoids gas tax and gets better MPG 4) More comfortable Recaros 5) Cheaper 6) Stamp of approval from Mr. Shelby himself 7) First to reach 200 mph 8) Easier to work on, less computers 9) Looks like a 60s Mustang 10) Was compared to cars twice it's value at the time and was beating them.

It’s because it handles slightly better than a pig (in stock form) and brakes suck. I love this car. Once you lower it, put on a watts link in the rear, and change the brakes and rotors, you can’t go wrong with it. I’ll take this over the new GT500 any day.

After 6 years in Germany my family and our '13 Shelby GT500 will be returning to the US in July 2023. She has had a really great time here. Usually, on the autobahn, we average 110-150 MPH. We have been close to 200 MPH for short periods because due to autobahn improvements and repairs you can't go a long way like that and you really don't want to. There has been a movement to take away the unlimited speeds and go with the rest of the EU and have a max speed of 120/130 KPH or 72/78 MPH. I hope, if they do, they wait until July 2023 when we will be gone. The one thing that I still feel uneasy about is passing the Polizei and they don't come after you.

These cars are severely underrated. Start with the Trinity engine, dual-clutch six-speed MANUAL trans, carbon fiber driveshaft, Torsen rear axle. Yeah, the entire drivetrain is unique to the GT500's in '13 & '14. It isn't a huffed and stuffed base engine. Oh, and Ford GT cams. These things are FAST. Mine is bone-stock, 7,500 miles and I only run 101 octane fuel. I fitted mine with 325 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's on the rear (requires an adjustable track bar). Even with that rubber, it will spin the tires at 80 in 3rd, and not just a little bit. Zero to sixty can be done in first gear. I forgot that in my testing, shifted, cussed, and still ripped a 4.0 flat. I don't have a Hellcat or new GT500, and here's why: Hellcats aren't special enough, they put that engine in EVERYTHING. The new GT500 has no stick shift, an unremarkable engine, is too heavy, and they couldn't even put the rear brake calipers in the proper location. Save your hate mail, lot's of folks like those cars, and that's perfectly fine. My opinion is my own. The 2013 's are special, which is why there are more '14's in the market at any given time. I sometimes think about selling mine, because I'm getting old and worry about my skills being able to handle such a beast. I just can't think of anything I can remotely afford that even comes close.

I love how respectful you are to the car and how aware you are of its powers and weaknesses! At our local beach we have this long parking lot that follows the curves of the seaside road right next to it. Then there's a concrete wall going up to the seaside park. Every now and then during the summer we have car meets on that parking lot. Typically they go very nicely and quietly but last weekend someone decided to floor a 2010-ish Mustang around the corner. Came flying sideways just a few inches from my front bumper and proceeded to crash head on into the wall two or three spots away from where I was parked... At first I was like "Oh no, poor guy, he must feel so bad about it!" But then I thought "Well, he should - he floored it in between parked cars and walking people!" He also ended up damaging some public property in the form of service channels with cables and what not, which runs down said wall. It really saddens me how many of these end up in the hands of incompetent drivers...

I love that car! I owned a Ruby Red with black stripes! I prefer this 2014 over the new one only because it has the mansmission(manual 6speed)! The new one I feel isn’t connected to the driver because it’s automatic! They should have given the new car both transmissions in my opinion

I like them not just because of the manual. There’s that torque that hits instantly, the bespoke 5.8 engine, it has some refinement but an otherwise raw experience, the supercharger whine is louder, and the exhaust has a sound on its own.

With out a doubt I would have this over the s550 GT500. Firstly manual and secondly I think these look better. Now I would add if I could do a 2022 Mach 1 I would. Best 5.0 to date mated to a Tremec 6 speed. And all the handling benefits from the Gt350.

My favorite S550 is definitely the GT350. It has a better manual and such a special engine. I live in Europe though and since the Mustang is rather rare here I'd be happy with a normal boring GT because that's still special here and it's THE Mustang.

I almost bought one of these GT500’s over my S550 5.0 because the 2013-2014 Mustangs were some of the best looking imo but I knew deep down that a 700HP Mustang with a live axle was a bit unsettling so I went with the S550 for the IRS.
