Nice work Brian. Not many has your patience. I bought a jeep Cherokee that battery had contacted the hood. Fried computer but no fuse blown. I found that a little strange. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I picked up a 2003 Piaggio LT150 scooter that sat for years. Of course the seller claimed it just needed fresh gas and a battery (Yuasa = $95), but as always it was so much more. The master fuse was blown due to a previous reversed jump attempt (20 cents), as well as a bad starter button ($8), totally clogged carb (1.5 cans of carb cleaner), and lastly a stuck fuel petcock ($20). Still needs the 20 y/o tires (100 each) and sticky rear brake cable replaced ($35). Here in Oakland, California the Vespa / scooter dealer charges $165/hour shop rate, so working on older vehicles only makes sense if you DIY.

Sticky cable is easy, you run brake cleaner down the inner core to wash it free, using a piece of plastic bag as a seal, and then follow up with WD40 to rinse, then finally a spray of silicone to wash the WD40 out. Will move freely again as the crud is gone. Does not work if the inner plastic liner on the cable is torn though, that you go to the bike shop and get just the inner cable, and replace it with that.

Lucky you have an older Toyota, with only 2 types of fuse, not a more modern vehicle where you have standard ATO, mini ATO and micro ATO fuses, all in the same fuse box, and all buried up under the dash, where you need to either bend yourself in half to see, or use a camera to look in there to find the box, then contort to reach the fuses, then struggle to get the new one in place again. Yes keeping a small baggie with a good selection of fuses in that fuse box is great, it has saved me a few times, along with keeping some short pieces of solid core and stranded network cable there as well, which you can use to make an emergency fuse, just the one strand will do, thinner than the vehicle wire, so it fails first. Good use for the CCA junk, as it melts at a nice low temperature, so no smoke either.

Tip for those deep bolts is a small supermagnet, which you can get from the laser pickup in any CDROM or DVD drive, there by the lens. 2 per unit, and they are very strong, and tiny, so you just slip it into the socket, and it will hold the bolt or nut you are attempting to remove, and also will hold it in place to insert as well. Works well on any 10mm socket into a deep buried place.

Or old hard drives, they have big neodymium magnets

@@andreidoimetri You want a small one that will fit inside a 10mm socket, not a big one. Tip as well is to take them, and use a thin steel wire, and dip them in varnish, and leave to harden on the wire. Wire wiped down with oil, so it will not stick, but magnet cleaned with brake clean. When dry pull wire out, put on other side, then dip again, so the magnet is sealed, as they will otherwise disintegrate into a magnetic powder when the coating on them is damaged.

Reverse polarity on semiconductors is almost always catastrophic unless protection is designed in. The simplest measure is a reverse diode across the input, which will blow the fuse if the supply is reversed, and that is likely what Toyota did in this case. I don't think every manufacturer bothers, however.

Six sigma for Toyota means less than one fault at dealer level per thousand vehicles, while for the US manufacturers it means less than one fault per vehicle when it arrives at the dealer.
