Suzi, hi 😍💐 how very kind of you to also watch this video, I appreciate the support and your comment very much. Fiddling with root tips is always a delicate issue, and I would really prefer to have some wipe my forehead on occasions 😆 this was easier than I thought and thankfully, I did not snap off a viable root tip! They do not look very solid to me, soooo 😅 wishing you a wonderful rest of your day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

🦒👋🥰 Well, that was easy. I would expect the roots would be more attached to the mount but in the end they seemed happy to get rid of that wood and the chunk of coconut fibers. Cute how new roots are branching, poking out of the older one. Great job 😘😘😘😘😘

FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hola querida amiga mia, vecina favorita! I was happy that it was that easy! And the fact that the wire had corroded to the point of just falling off like that... well, lucky it happened while I was handling her to get her off the mount and not carrying her outside to mist her out of the container 🙆🏼‍♀️ I like that root poking up as well... its kinda cute...high five and all! Hopefully not a cry for help like someone in the ocean raising their hand desperately needing to be rescued 😅 thank you so much for taking time out of your Saturday to watch, meine liebe Freundin! HI!! 😍 💐I like the growth habit of this orchid. With the exception of her long spike, when she does come into bloom, she is pretty small and compact, simple growth habit, compact rhizome etc... I like that 👍🏼 I just hope she follows along with the set up I have planned for her and does well. Last resort, I will mount her again 🤪🥊 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! I hope you are already having a great day by the time you read this 🫶🏼❤️🌸

The beginning part reminded me of an operation. 👩‍⚕️🩺 In February, I got my first two mounted orchids, the Gastrochilus japonicus and the Bulbophyllum barbigerum. For the Bulbophyllum, I accidently cut it off the mount while trimming the roots. After repotting it like the setup in this video with the lava rock, the main bulb rotted so I was left with an empty cork mount. I'm now thinking about buying a mini phal to mount to it as a first time project. The Gastrochilus japonicus grows monopodially like a phal and it has very interesting flowers.

Hi Joe 😍 💐removing orchids off mounts is a surgical procedure! luckily though, this one was not root on at all and it was so much easier than I had anticipated. I couldn't see anything below the coco fibre... phew! I don't like receiving mounted orchids, mainly because of me knowing I have to remove them, and then also, because of the way roots grow up... as is the case with this one branching root. She doesn't have 'any' as it is, so that is a waste of a good branching root, in my climate. Mounts are a league of their own, but so much easier to hydrate, time permitting, so much easier to fertilize with many nutrients alternating that the balance is somewhat rapid and there is no waiting period between drying out etc. If I had a climate that permitted more mounted orchids, I would have them along the walls of the patio, but, not my home and I don't have the climate. When mounting your mini phal, remember that they are actually in need of more water than their counter parts, the large ones. That is what I have found to be true with mine. They may be small, but they want / need more because they are small. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your first mount 😊 thank you so much for watching, Joe!! Wishing you a great day. p.s.: I saw your comments and links in the chat of the stream, so, have fun with what you have planned for the day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

You spoil me with your time, also watching this video, thank you so much 🙏🏼 its sounds logical to me, to reverse the layering based on the preference of this orchid during the winter. I hope to keep that reservoir somewhat dry and airy in order for this one to grow well. That is the theory! Now we have to wait and see if she plays along and grows as anticipated 🤞🏼 Wishing you a relaxing Saturday evening, amigo mio! Please, if you speak to your Princesses, tell them hello from me 🫶🏼❤️🌸

I love the growth habit, because it is not a crawling rhizome... nice and compact. So, if we ever get to spike stage, the only challenge I have now is for her to understand that I mean well with this kind of set up and I hope she recognizes my efforts 🤞🏼😬 you are a very special person, and I am so blessed that you are here! Laelia rubescens is not a vigorous root grower and it is honestly amazing how small the root system can be, even on a large, well-grown plant. A lot of people struggle with it in cultivation and I think you would have been better leaving it on the mount but I understand there are only so many mounts you can handle.

However,😅, the mountain seems to have a lot of salt buildup. And that coconut husk it’s mounted on is really wicked thing. It becomes very acidic very quickly and really sets the orchid back. In India, we deal with it so often. And infection too.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Thank you for the intel on her root behavior! The fact that she does branch her roots gives me hope that there is a little more grace with getting to grow her in this reverse lava rock size set up. If temps drop lower than the 58ºF then I am going to bring her inside for her first winter, but I am feeling positive about being able to grow her with this lava rock only pot. I hope that I am right 😬 (as per) 🫣 as she can be outside for longer and more often than some other mounts, I will mount her again, should this not work. I don't want to loose her 🤞🏼 thank you so much for watching and for the information! I hope you are already having a fabYOUlous day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hi!! 😍💐 I think the nursery repurposed that mount when they put this orchid on, or wherever they got her from initially. It was not to my liking and if I had remounted her, I would have gone for something much larger as well. The coconut husk.... yeah, I don't know how that was treated, was it leached, how old is it? Is it also repurposed etc. So many unknowns, so I did focus on plain water for the first months she arrived, after her inital CalMag application. I don't mind coco husk, but not under the circumstances where I have no clue how it was handled and treated. 😬 (trust issues abound) 😆 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! I hope that you are having a beautiful Saturday in your beautiful part of the world 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Most of my small to med size chids are in tree fern with maybe some charcoal or bark, depending on the type of plant it is. I know Todd adds oyster shell to a lot of his and has had really good success. 🙂 I've never liked using wire as I've heard that the rust can be harmful to some orchids, I have used coated wire or a non rusting wire, but almost all my mounts are held in place with rubber coated elastic cording and love it. So easy to tie on and as plant grows it expands with it. 😅 I get my cording from Tarzane orchids in Florida. I order from them often. 😊 Hope your having a peaceful weekend Nina.. catch ya later.... 🦜

🦤🦅😍 Wingman! It is always such a pleasure to see you... knowing that you are not 100%, your still being here, taking the time to watch and comment, I cannot thank you enough 😘 yes! Todd started adding oyster shells after he heard how I saw the large angreacoids grow in Kenya in the sandy coral landscape of some cliff side properties. They used to plant them at the base of a tree, sometimes in combination with a monstera on the other side and if the ground was just a big chunk of rock (for lack of the technical term) they would drill holes, or chip away at it until they could position an angraecum (or monstera) into it, then just fill it up with whatever material they had removed to create the hole. Tie it to the trunk of the tree and that was it. So, when Todd heard that, he told me that it gave him the thought to add oyster shells into his mixes and that was a genius bridge he built! I love the elastic wire, but can't get that here, or else I would use it. Instead, I try to limit the amount of fishing line by using screws where necessary or the plastic coated wire that I have used in the past. It seems to last forever, thankfully! Rust is acidic after all... no bueno for roots. I wish you a peaceful weekend as well, Robert! Thank you for everything 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Enjoyed watching you repot this Laelia. Interesting use of the different sizes of lava rock. (I'm learning from you how to use the different sizes.) I did a bit of research on this orchid and learned that it is referred to as the "Flor de Jesus" in Guatemala. Interesting, isn't it? The flowers shown on websites is just gorgeous. Hmmmm? Should I look for one for my collection? Can you believe that my dendrobium 'dearei" is in spike? What a nice surprise when I was in the orchid garden yesterday. I've been growing it for about 4 years and this is the first time that it is rewarding me with blooms. So exciting! I have it in organic medium and will probably repot it in a larger pot with organic medium after flowering. It is a very tall plant. Never disappointed with the videos you produce. Keep them coming. Take care and enjoy life!

Hi Pat 😍💐 thank you so much for your feedback on the video and letting me know that you enjoyed it 🙏🏼 I did not know that she was called Flor de Jesus in Guatemala, but that is wonderful to know and now I am even more grateful to my intuition of NEEDING this orchid in my collection. I shall see her even more as a blessing now... if that is even possible, but it is definitely a joyous thought, when I look at her now to know her common name in Guatemala! Thank you so so much for this nugget of intel!! I absolutely love it and appreciate it... sometimes I do say a prayer over my orchids, and sometimes I just give thanks because of what I see my orchids are doing, so... my rubescens is now even more precious, so the pressure is really on to get it right with her 🙏🏼 huge congratulations on your dearei 🙌🏼 pristine white blooms are in your future, and well, you may know that I have a certain affinity to pure white 😬 well done! Great growing and yes, 4 years is a long time to wait, but now I bet you feel as though the time just flew 🥰 I hope she brings you a lot of joy and that she comes with a divine fragrance as well. 😍 Sylvia, hi 💐 thank YOU so much for taking time out of your Saturday to come and see what is going on on the patio! I appreciate the support very much 🫶🏼 I received this orchid on this mount in Dec. 2023 but did not pot her up straight away because I was waiting for active root growth. Unless something goes horribly wrong, I hope to cultivate her in this somewhat more controlled version of Semi Hydro 🤞🏼 While I love mounted orchids, I cannot have too many of them because the growing season is normally dry and warm with dry winds to compound the low humidity. We shall see if she settles in and continues her root growth and then how she copes with my attempts to ensure a somewhat drier pot during the winter 🤞🏼 wishing you a wonderful rest of your day, Sylvia! Thank you for being here 🫶🏼❤️🌸
