How to Sterilize Pruning Tools & Pots for Orchids as well as Houseplants

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#orchidcare #orchids #sterilization
In this video, I'll show you essential methods to sterilize your pruning tools, snips, knives, and pots to keep your orchids healthy and disease-free. 🌿✨
Why Sterilization Matters:
When orchids show signs of disease, pruning might be necessary. However, disease pathogens can hitch a ride on your tools and infect other plants. Sterilizing your tools and pots between uses helps prevent cross-contamination and ensures your orchids stay healthy.
Sterilization Methods:
Bleach Solution:
Mix 1 part bleach to 9 parts water.
Soak tools for 30 minutes, then rinse and dry.
Effective but can damage tools and give off harmful fumes. Use PPE and ensure good ventilation.
Isopropyl Alcohol:
Use 70-100% alcohol for sterilization.
Wipe, spray, or dip tools for immediate effectiveness.
No mixing or rinsing needed, but wait for alcohol to evaporate completely.
Household Cleaners:
Products like Lysol, Pine-Sol, and Listerine can be used.
Use at full strength for spraying, dipping, or soaking.
Effectiveness varies; follow safety precautions.
Physan 20:
A broad-spectrum disinfectant effective against fungi, viruses, and algae.
Follow specific concentration instructions for different pathogens.
Long shelf life and cost-effective.
Heat Sterilization:
Use a gas torch or stove flame to sterilize metal parts.
Target the blue part of the flame for best results.
Handle with care to avoid accidents.
Additional Tips:
Rinse tools after use to keep them clean but remember this doesn’t sterilize them.
For rough or serrated surfaces, longer soaking times may be needed.
Rotate between multiple tools to ensure continuous work while one is being disinfected. #orchideen #orquideas #orchideenpflege #tipsandtricks #tricks #tutorial #tips #beginners #disease #fungi #houseplants #gardening

🦒👋🥰 Important reminder, Thank you. My favourite method for tools is isopropol alcohol and throw a flame at it. It needs to be careful though. For pots I usually put them in the dishwasher machine at 75 degrees. Have a fabulous summer-like SUNday amiga mia 😘😘😘😘😘

@@NinjaOrchids My guess is that you need a rest but I understand sometimes it is difficult to escape our routines and we keep thinking of the chores to be done. When I wash them in the dishwasher I use product and the reason why is that I never have more than 1 or 2 pots to wash at a time and then I just add them to my other kitchen stuff. The eco cycle of my washing machine at 45 degrees takes 3h05 and if I want 75 degrees the cycle is shorter but still takes 2h30. It's a lot of washing time 😵‍💫, no reason it does not come out real clean. It's a Siemens, btw. Much love, take care ❤️❤️❤️❤️

there are two other options, both of which are nearly as effective as bleach but far less corrosive. The first is Barbicide (alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride), the blue stuff that is used to sterilize barber/hair styling tools. It is an effective antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, it does require a minimum of one hour soak but tools can safely be left in it overnight. The other is 2% chlorhexidine gluconate, which can be found at farm supply stores or ordered online (in the US at least) It has a high dilution rate so a small amount goes a long way (2 tablespoons per gallon, or 15 ml per 2 L). As with Barbicide, soak for one hour. Fire is best, but it can also damage tools if you over-flame, but NOTHING survives flaming.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I love the barber product to sterilize the tools!! Thank you so much for mentioning this because, that should not be difficult to source, no matter where people find themselves in the world, I would think 👍🏼 my pruners are so nasty looking because I use bleach on them a lot, and well... yes, that barber stuff is a really good suggestion! Thank you! I have never really used a flame because of the possible damage it will do to the tools. I know that it is the best method, but yeah, while I feel I am a pyromaniac, it is best I stay away from messing around with gas and flames at this stage of my life. 😬😅 hope your day is going beautifully for you, amigo mio! Thank you so much for watching and adding your recommendations here 🫶🏼 so appreciated ❤️🌸

🌸🥷🏼Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 god evening, my good Sir!! *takes a curtsey 🥰 we all do that at some point! I know that I have done that as well in the past. However, now I can only focus on one repot at a time so at least that kind of eliminates the cross contamination. But, I never finish a repot project without sterilizing my tools, ready to go for the next time, or, if I spontaneously need to grab my snips to cut something off, then I can do that in an instant without having to wait for alcohol to evaporate (resulting in me forgetting what it is that I wanted to cut off in the first place, forcing me to retrace my steps and waste time until I remember, IF I remember 😂) hope you are having a wonderful day, 🌸🥷🏼Friend San 🫶🏼 thank you so much for taking another moment of your day to spend some of your precious time here ❤️🌸

HI Richard 😍💐 awesome! Heat will deal with everything! Nothing survives the heat 👍🏼 little naughty fun fact on the side, when I had my second collection back in the 90s, I never sterilized my tools or pots! Coming from Kenya where the orchids were in the landscape to growing orchids in a pot... I was more like, my pots were my trees. Now though, with the knowledge of how detrimental cross contamination can be, I am a lot more diligent about it, not paranoid, but close 😆 thank you so much for watching, Richard! I tried Physan20 with my orchids for the first time this year. I just put a couple of drops in the new potting mix while it was soaking. I like the way it smells but it's toxic. Like Nina mentioned in the video, sterilizing in-between each cut is very important. I even change gloves or try to wash them. I also sterilize new pots with 3% hydrogen peroxide spray and wash my working trays after each orchid. All this takes time... 😵‍💫

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    Ай бұрын

HI Joe 😍 💐 you are ahead of me because you wear gloves 👍🏼 I can't do the gloves part, so I make sure to also sterilize all my trays between orchids. Now that my collection isn't as big anymore, I rarely do bulk repots so it is easier to keep things separate and cleaned up after a session. When I do take several orchids in a batch, I am 99.9% confident that there is nothing wrong with them 😬 the clean up is time consuming indeed! I have really worked to make it a habit to have everything put away after a repot as if I were dealing with my kitchen after cooking and dinner. Put everything away even though I may need it again next day 😆 at least this routine disciplines me 👍🏼 thank you, Joe, for watching and your comment, sharing what you do 🫶🏼 hope you are having a fabYOUlous week ❤️🌸

Hi 😍💐 it is so good to see you! I hope you are doing well, having a great Sunday 🫶🏼 same here, when it comes to bleach, that is why my pruners are so rusty looking, because they get bleach treatment after use. Seeing as I cut rhizomes with them I prefer to soak those in bleach as opposed to relying on alcohol... unfortunate side effect. 🌸🥷🏼 Nina San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 thank you so so much for your request and thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate that 🫶🏼 I have a video on physan 20 for use with orchids that have contracted fusarium kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4mols2PY9ayp9o.html however, seeing as there are so many dilutions for physan 20 depending on what the circumstances are that we encounter with our orchids and plants, in general, I have linked the document in the description which gives all the dilutions for all kinds of things that Physan 20 works for and against. I hope you check out that link and see if you have any questions based on what you see there? Please let me know. Seeing as we have to deal with fusarium on occasions, at least... sometimes and I hope never for the majority of orchid growers, I focussed on that in a single video. The orchid I show in this video was confirmed with fusarium, but the disease had already progressed to such an extent, I lost her anyway. So, I consider Physan 20 more of a preventative as opposed to a cure, unless the disease has not taken that big a hold, as it is not a systemic. I hope that if you have specific questions on the application of physan 20 that you will get back to me. 😘 thank you so much for your kind support and your time, and friendship!
