Revell Vought Corsair F4U-1A

Buliding the Revell 1:32 F4U-1A Corsair. This is my third video. Since the model was rather big and lacking in overall detail, in this build, I tried to experiment with some new techniques and materials. The result is a heavy weathered build, perhaps not historically accurate but nonetheless overall satisfying. You might notice some mistakes, please leave a comment if you wish.

Yeah this kit is old and may not be accurate, and the parts fit may be fidgety, but building it and having it turn out like this, that's what model building is all about. I remember when this hobby used to be fun. You bought a kit and just built it. You didn't care about accuracy, you probably wouldn't know if it was accurate or not, you didn't care, you cared about the end result. You did a fantastic job. I did build this back in the 70's or 80's. I got one sent to me in error a couple of years ago. My plan is to make is a Fleet Air Arm machine flown by a Canadian serving in the RN.

Yeah, I built that years ago, in the 70s. I see the parts fit is no better now than it was back then. A shame to invest all that time and have a sloppy parts fit detract from the finished product. If I do it again I'll try a different manufacturer. Back in the day this was as good as it got for me. My Uncle got me interested in modeling, He was 7 years older than me and I'd look forward to going to his place (grandparents house) after school on Tuesdays. He would be listening to what is now classic rock (got me interested in music enough to learn the bass and play in bands in the NYC tristate club scene) Sometimes I'd fish out a kit he got frustrated with from the trash and save it and other times he would buy me a kit too.I was in 5th grade when I started. Thinking of getting back into it. The last kit I built was the Hasegawa Feissler Storch , that was a few years ago. Hey, I love the musical choice!

The correct colors for USN/USMC tri-color camouflage are Sea Blue (ANA 606), Intermediate Blue (ANA 608) and Insignia White (ANA 601). Sorry, but it really bugs me when people paint models (or even actual warbirds) in inaccurate colors. @@adampender2482 He certainly can paint it how he likes or as best he can. Obtaining accurate paint colors can be challenging depending on your budget and location. Revelle's box art is close, but their paint guide colors are not. (At least not in my kit's instructions.) Though WBP didn't follow those either. Not everyone cares about accuracy in their models and that is OK! I posted the correct colors because I want people, who do want accuracy, to know that the colors used in this build were not accurate. I'd recommend that those who do care about accuracy spend a bit of time researching what the real colors are/were and then use the widely available conversion charts to purchase or replicate those colors with the brands of paints that are available to them. Uber-nerds will know to check period photos and documentation to ensure accuracy, since planes/tanks/vehicles in respected museums or at airshows are not always painted accurately. I've seen some beautiful Corsairs on the airshow circuit with inaccurate colors. Again, I'm not trying to belittle WBP's build or say it isn't a nice model. I only want to point out that the colors are not technically accurate for an actual Corsair in WWII. Happy modelling.

cover the aircraft with masking tape or clear tape, then pull it off, chips will appear and they will look authentic. i do it with all my models. the base coat must be of silver, which you did. but i prefer to paint brush silver enamel thickly onto surfaces i want chipped, then i spray.... and then apply the tape when everything is dry. ..

A very old kit, probably using the same dies from the 1970s, no wonder panel line details are weak and there's a lot of flash.

No wonder you think this kit is so bad. The molds are from 1970...... And these are original Revell molds. You're asking for trouble.............!!! |-)

I guess the resource of USA was poorer than the Japanese in WW2 Weathering is need but not to do it over. The war machine is short life very hard to use through the war period even the ace pilot

It's a shame the faulty assemble of each piece of the model. This not to mention the not elimination of burr, even before painting each piece. The case of the pilot a good example. In spanish we call this "CHANTA"

Every modeler has his/her own interpretation of how the model is built. There is no „right“ or „wrong“ way. The most important thing is, you like it after it’s finished. If not, get another, do it again. Yes, the wrong colors put me off at first too, for example. But actually, somehow I like it. He could have painted it in three shades of purple if he decided to, it’s his model. A very good friend of mine for example never once painted a single model in its original colors ever. He just uses them for his own „head cinema“. Let alone some „faulty assemblies“...

My thoughts exactly... If I had opened the box in the shop, I wouldn't have bought it... Nevertheless, it was one of the first kits I bought once I started modelling (after a 30 yrs hiatus), so I said "what the hell...". I tried to experiment with some new (for me) techniques on that one... (like chipping with hairspray, oil washes, highlighting etc).. didn't turn out a disaster.
