Revell 1/72 Scale Gato Class Submarine

Ойын-сауық

I built this model in 2010 and I just came across the construction photos.
This video will cover the construction steps I took for building the Revell 1/72 scale Gato class submarine.
This model in on permanent display on the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, Texas. Give the Lexington a visit and view the models on display in the museum onboard the ship.

You did a great paint job weathering that model. Very impressive👍

Thank you for your comment. This was my first real attempt to weather a submarine and come up with a technique for rust. I tried different brushes, paint, water color, pastel chalk and things I don't even remember before finally finding a method that seemed to look like rust to me. Then I applied it, and didn't like it. Then tried again, and again. I finally said "that will have to do" and called it done. Thank you again for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

MASTERPIECE! Your mastery of the weathering process is amazing. Only you will see any mistakes 😀👍

Believe me, I made a ton of mistakes on this kit. This was my first time to simulate rust effects at this scale and I spent hours working the technique. I would apply and remove and reapply until I got something that looked somewhat acceptable. Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

Unreal work, definitely deserves to be displayed at the model museum. Excellent technique with the rivets and the weathering is top notch!

Thank you, I appreciate the comments! I was quite surprised when I was asked to donate the model. It is nice to know that it is being seen by the visitors to the museum. The rivets were a shot in the dark. I was unsure if it was a good idea. I made some practice runs on some scrap plastic and decided to go for it. This model is where I learned to do somewhat realistic looking rust effects. Thanks again for the comments and for watching the video. Best wishes!

Thank you so much, I appreciate the comment. I worked hard to get a realistic looking model. I was very honored when I was asked to donate the model to the USS Lexington museum. It is nice to know that those that visit the ship could be seeing my model too. Thank you again for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

I made every effort to get as accurate as I could based on the information I had at the time of this build. I admit I had to use "poetic license" in some areas. Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

Great work, music and a very informative video. Thanks! A little bit about myself. My work for many years has been related to the creation of hydroacoustic complexes of submarines. Good luck with everything!

Great work and some very realistic weathering. Really enjoyed the video. I’ve got the same Boat in my stash but with all the other bits I’ve got going on I can’t see it being started any time soon. That said your build has certainly got me thinking….🤔…….very well done.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I try to make the videos I do educational and enjoyable as best as I can. Those two subs on display next to each other would make a very nice presentation. Currently I'm trying to get started on the 1/200 scale USS Enterprise CV6. I haven't been at the bench in a while but I hope to get started soon. Thank you again for your comments and for watching my videos, it is highly appreciated! Best wishes!

Wow! actual hands on a real sub, that is awesome! I don't think I would want to take on that task. I would ask what sub but if you told me you would probably have to shoot me! Ha ha! Anyway, thank you for leaving a comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

great build!! too bad with all we see on tv about german engineering that they don't have decent die makers, i am doing the 1/48 memphis belle, and after all these years the kit is still lacking for details and fit!! the streched sprue idea was great, i have a set of rosie the riviter 1/48 and 1/72 rivit wheels, also where did you get the photo etch from?? anyway i enjoyed the build very much!!

Thank you for the comment, it is appreciated. I built the Revell / Monogram B-17G and also had some fit issues and details that had to be added. I fate would have it, I built it as the Commemorative Airforce "TEXAS RAIDERS" I was very sad at the loss of the aircraft and the pilots involved. I think the photo etch set I used on this build came from Eduard. (Not completely certain) Good luck with your project and thanks again for watching the video and for leaving a comment. Best wishes!

What a crappy build. Submarines don’t rust below the waterline. You never corrected the molded errors in bow. The conning tower details are soft and inaccurate. I judge IPMS contests and I would never rate this build as commendable.

Thank you for the comment and for watching the video. The model was entered in IPMS contests and took first place. The judges said it was a crappy build but felt sorry for me and awarded it first place. The museum onboard the USS Lexington also said it was a crappy build but asked if I would donate it to the museum. I donated the model to the museum and they said it would get put in a proper place, considering how crappy the build was. Thank you again for your comments and rest assured the model has been well taken care of at the museum on the USS Lexington.
