Revel Ranger, the downcountry CHAMP!

I spent a lot of time in 2020 on the hunt for a new bike. After much deliberation and a last minute change of heart, the verdict is in!
The Downcountry Crusher, Revel Ranger.
Since Revel launched, it seems like anyone who has ridden one walked away with a glowing impression. When the Revel Ranger was released I was curious and the reviews of it were stellar across the board. On paper, the other contenders like the Transition Spur and Specialized Epic Evo seemed like the path I was going to take. But in the saddle, the Revel Ranger was the knockout champion for our trails here in the Southeastern U.S.
A light and efficient bike that still likes to party. All day efficiency and comfort that still stays composed when tackling more technical trails at speed.
This Ranger has it all.

    My son and I met there before Thanksgiving. We shuttled the trails a couple times. Down the live wire 1 & 2 and the the other side down high voltage. Pretty technical trails. My sb100 did okay. My sons trek fuel maybe was better suited for the trails. The one thing I noticed about the ranger that is different than my bike is the reach- about 25 mm longer. So it puts you behind the bars further and that might be best for the steep sections at the top of high voltage. We did not get to do any of the playground trails at the top. Would like to make another trip up. Great video - good quality. Thanks.

    I’ve been a long time fan of the Rekon. Fast rolling while still providing good grip. I wasn’t sure about the dissector. Looking at it, it reminded me of the DHF which I don’t really care for. However it’s been really good so far. It feels really predictable in the corners and rolls super fast.

  • @SemiSendy

    @SemiSendy

    3 жыл бұрын

    I really liked the Evo. Super fast and really capable. Pedaling performance was really similar to the Ranger. The rear end reminded me a bit more of the Spur, which may be due to the flex stay design. Both the Spur and Evo shave weight with this feature, but to me both just don’t feel as smooth on small bump and harsher on bigger hits too.

    You mentioned about the steep head tube (67.5) so my question how does it feel at speed? Also how does it feel pointing down? I’ve had some steep head tubes before and it felt like the wheel was underneath the bike. Just curious on your thoughts!

  • @SemiSendy

    @SemiSendy

    2 жыл бұрын

    The steeper HTA provides a nice snappy feel. It's more geared toward typical trail riding than steep tech. As for the HTA, that's fairly subjective. Many of my older bikes 10+ years ago were more around the 72* mark, so a 67.5* doesn't feel tucked under the bike for me.

    Great review! What did you like about the Ranger over the Spur? This bike is near the top of the NBD list for me as well.

  • @SemiSendy

    @SemiSendy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Interestingly, both the climbing and descending performance as well as the handling were all notably better (or better suited for local terrain). The CBF suspension is super efficient on the climbs both in and out of the saddle, yet still more plush with small bump, chatter and larger hits. The Spur drops weight by using flex stays, but I felt this wasn’t a benefit to its tracking and small bump. Even though the Ranger is heavier, it feels more spry when hammering down. The Ranger picks up snappiness in steering with the steeper HTA. In theory, the spur should be more stable at speed with the slacker HTA, but the chatter in the year drew away from its potentional stability IMO. I’m a HUGE Transition fan, and the Spur is one of the most drop dead gorgeous bikes I’ve ever seen. Revel is just on to something uniquely special.

    I do still have it, and I probably rode it more than any other bike in all of 2021. It’s a joy every time I get out on the Ranger. The spare is an incredible bike, no question. Ultimately though when I test rode both bikes the Ranger felt a lot snappier in the titan twisty stuff with the steeper head to Bangor, and also more poised tackling chunky features due to that CBF suspension and the fact that the Spur uses flex stats instead of the Horst link on their other four bar bikes. I really want to revisit the spur now that I’ve spent so much time on the Ranger though, and it looks like I’ll have that opportunity. My good friend Devon recently picked up a spur in the same frame size as my ranger, and we plan to get out and swap bikes on some rides together.

    I have. The new 429 felt a bit dull to me, for lack of a better description. I felt it lacked snappiness and the rear end felt really over damped even after a lot of fiddling with the shock, which I've found usually indicates a characteristic of the linkage design. It certainly wasn't bad, but also not great. It reminded me of the way the latest 'flex stay' bikes feel.

    I did. Ended up being able to ride them same day, same place. I'm a huge transition fan, and the spur is one of the most beautiful looking bikes I've ever seen. I had my heart pretty set on it, but at the end of the day, the Ranger came out ahead for me. It's really interesting how the numbers all played out on the trail. I thought the Spur would be much more stable, especially in rough stuff at speed. With just a factory base tune and proper sag set on both bikes, the Ranger felt much more planted and composed in the chop. The small bump was more supple and medium sized (3-5') drops felt dialed on the Ranger. The Ranger also offers more responsive geometry and faster handling, great for our terrain here in the Southeast US.

    @@SemiSendy nice. Sounds like the suspension on the ranger might make it a better technical climber as well. Mind me asking what size youre on? Does the slightly slacker STA bother you at all? One or two reviews elsewhere online mentioned a little petal bob and had wished for a steeper seat tube

  • @SemiSendy

    @SemiSendy

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mitchelllawver6097 I'd venture to guess it would lend itself to technical climbing a bit better as well, due to the general tracking. The test track I was on didn't have any significant technical climbing though to really say for sure. The steeper STA's definitely help reign in the trend of longer/slacker front ends, but the STA on the Ranger feels appropriate to its overall geo. As for pedal bob, that's not something that's been a notable concern. Even out of the saddle the pedal efficiency is super responsive.

    Thank you! As for frame sizing, that's truly personal. For myself, I look at the geometry numbers to see which size fits my personal geo preference. If your preferences fall outside of the manufacturer's suggested size, go with what you know to work best for you. As for the manufacturer's suggested sizing, 5'9" is a bit closer to 180cm (179.8cm). Based on that chart you'd come in at the very fringe low side of the large frame suggestion. If the medium geometry numbers look closer to your preference, that's probably the way I would go.
