Thank you for this!!!! There is so little content doing SSD reviews! Also with the Solidigm, I've seen from other reviews that the controller can get very hot, which might mean that it's thermal throttling for the consistency test.

Great video. I was taking notes :) and noticed that while you stated 'cache' as one of the categories you would cover, I didn't ever see a drive list, or bar chart on that specific category. Was this an oversight, or perhaps lumped into one the other groups? Seems like a drive that performs better at caching would be used for everyday access and usage. Great presentation and I like your style. Great job.

yeah esp seeing it trades blows with the 990 pro in being the best gen 4 drive. Random speeds samsung is a bit faster but pc mag benches program, games and windows load times and the sn850x best the 990 pro across the board. I'd bet it's because the sn850x uses really fast dram cache, it literally uses straight ddr4 3200, while the samsung uses lpddr which has half the memory bus and multiple times worse latency even if it is clocked slightly higher iirc.

  • @stevenmatosu9321

lp of lpddr is low power, hence the clocking.

I use a Corsair force MP600 on my Z390 mb and replaced the stock heatsink with one designed for a gen5 ssd. The benefit to this is most gen3 drives don’t hit the full speed of the of the gen3 m.2 slot but a gen4 drive will while throttling back to maximum gen3 speeds. I also chose it because it can sustain 666 gigs written before slowing down. And with it going slower than advertised because it’s in a gen3 slot and has a gen5 heatsink, I don’t have to worry about it ever slowing down below maximum gen3 speeds.

Hi, great video as always! Well done! I follow you from Italy and I'm writing with google translator, in this video you talk about a configuration for creator and you say that generally you need 4 different ssds, 1) os drive/programs, 2) Project drive, 4) archive/data drive and 3) cache drive. The latter interests me a lot, I've never considered doing a build with a dedicated cache disk, how do you configure it? what do you put on it? for the chace do you manage it from the bios or from a special program or directly from the editing programs? maybe you already have a video explaining it, otherwise I would really like you to make a video dedicated to this! hello and congratulations again!

The key here for video creation is speed yes but also Dram. You have to see how long it takes and watch the meter to see if it slows down when it writes. You do not want that for video editing or recording.

I rock a 2TB SK Hynix P41 Platinum for my boot/OS, a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro for my games only, a 4TB Samsung 870 Evo for my music files (I produce and write music in FL Studio) and a 4TB Seagate Barracuda SATA HDD for large misc/random files. In my experience I find the SK Hynix P41 Platinum is the fastest especially for boot/OS and this is based on real life usage not on paper.

@theTechNotice I can't thank you enough for all the knowledge on your channel that I've gained by binge watching for the past few weeks Larri. I've learnt so much especially on SSD's. I went ahead and purchased a Samsung 990 PRO 1TB for my O/S drive, a Seagate FIRECUDA 530 4tb & a T-Force Cardea Z440 2TB for my project drives, and finally a Seagate FIRECUDA 530 500GB for cache drive based on your recommendations on your channel. I'm very happy with the performance of all the drives and my workflow is much smoother. I even reused my former O/S drive which was a slower PCIe gen 3 drive to my son's laptop and that thing is much faster now compared to the shitty Toshiba HDD it had previously. Now I'm planning on upgrading my I7-12700k to the I9-13900KS by the end of the year. looking forward to more Creator targeted content from you. keep up the good work my friend/guru. cheers.

I got an external case for a Samsung 980 Pro, just to keep a cloned copy of my boot SSD, also a Samsung 980 Pro. When I run Samsung Magician, it only sees the motherboards boot SSD. The backup drive appears as a separate device, identified by the case manufacturer. Is there anything I can do get Magician to “see” the Samsung SSD inside the case? Otherwise, I have no way to ensure that the backup SSD has the latest firmware, etc.

Just bought 2 Crucial `MX500 4TB. I'm thinking MX500 will spec out lower than the Kingston and Samsung 990. Would like to see how it rates (also price wise if you can). What speed is your NVMe socket to CPU connection? I've read about direct PCIe and thru a controller. How does that affect speed? PCIe 3.0 vs 4.0 vs 5.0 (is 5.0 even possible)? Speeds using RAID? How about filling the drives to 80% of capacity then testing speed? Just a couple of suggestions. Love the detailed info, and production of your videos. Keep up the great work!

Very good comparison. It could be better if you could include some NVMe SSD's from WD.

The two main factors I look for is not just the immediate speeds, but the consistent speeds over time. Does the performance drop off after a while under load, and how much? Also another major factor in my opinion is general failure rate, because a well performing drive is worth nothing if you have a higher risk of files getting corrupted etc. Especially for long term file storage.

true! Samsung is held rather high regard in the failure rate.

@@theTechNotice Agreed. Been running high end Samsung drives for about 7 years now without a single failure thus far. But I wonder how the competition is stacking up these days.

Yup I've had intel, corsair, sabrent and western D nvme drives that have failed at one time or other - I now have over 20 samsung NVME and sata 6g ssd's (over a period of 5 years) with a zero-failure-count 🧐🧐

It's July 4th 2023 and I've just watched this vid. I've been playing with a couple of different build assistants online and looking at a specific pair of SSD's that I've been favoring in both my "No Hold's Barred/Well... ALMOST" and "Decent Performance but with Restraint" builds. Those drives are the SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2 2280 500GB PCI-Express Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3c V-NAND 3-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V8P500BW for the boot drive coming in at this time at $71.60, and the MSI M461 M.2 2280 4TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SM461N4TB for major storage which is normally $209.99, currently selling for $179.99, and also has a rebate of $10 available to get it down to $169.99, For a 4TB drive, I say that can't be beat. I'd like to know your thoughts on those. We have major sales available now and for the next few days due to the holiday. And Amazon is having Amazon day within the next week. Not that I am personally planning on spending money... at this time. I'd have to get some REALLY amaze-balls deals to whip out my credit card. Things are really weird right now. Last weekend I saw a 4080 RTX which goes for $1,499.99 available for a coded discount on Newegg for %50 off. If I had a bit more money in my account I'd have built a new machine and gone for it. That discount is no longer available. Prices are all over the board on major components right now and dropping regularly. We live in interesting times.

I'd love to see you review the 8TB - Sabrent Rocket Q. Is it worth the money? Does it perform as well on the benchmarks? Can you achieve the save by using 4 x 2TB. Are there any real world benefits to 8TB? Also, how much storage does the average person use and perhaps even the KZread creator use?

I'd love to see the forthcoming PCIe 5.0 M.2's comparisons. I have a 2TB 980 Pro boot and RAID 1 Crucial P3 Plus 4TB. You can have some major changes in the performance once you start filling up these M.2s. So testing at e.g. 33%, 75%, and 85% (full) capacities would be extremely valuable information. _FYI .. as much as I would love Samsung 980 Pro to come in a "4TB" (chart) version, unfortunately it's capped at 2TB._
