You bought a car(s) without getting inside of it. I don't understand how buyers go to comic booths and drop hundreds, or thousands, of dollars on raws in less than 15 minutes. Sit down, go through the book, do a page count, check for rust, staples, tears etc. If a seller rushes you then tell them to "f(*& off." Life is actually as easy as you want it to be.

@@justanothercollector43 I don't buy many books nowadays but when I do it may be off eBay. When I get it, I at least count the pages to the story (typically drawn in the bottom right of every page panel). I try to do the best that I can to cover myself. But to go home and see that several books had issues and they weren't caught at the time of purchase is laughable. One book then I get it but a few? LOL talk about FOMO or naiveness. Obviously I like StickyGoose which is why I subscribe but his stories and experiences are funny.

You're being harsh here. We've all bought books not up to snuff. Also at a con it's difficult to go over the book with a microscope. The dealer should also have noted on the books bag labels that they had married covers, trimmed covers and replaced staples. He was selling them as pure unaltered comics to get a high price and to get rid of them. Dishonest dealers are not our friends in the comic book community.

I do pretty much the same thing as you regarding flipping through books of a certain age and value. I just wanted to add onto your comment by saying that a person should always check with the dealer before taking a comic out of a polybag. I usually ask them to do it for me so that I can see how they handle the book. That way, I can show that same level of care while I’m handling it. Also, I can see how that dealer feels or cares about that particular comic by how they handle it, and I can maybe use that to my advantage if/when we’re discussing price. But, the main reason I ask them to remove the book is so there isn’t a chance of me damaging it from the tape or from it being in a tight polybag, etc…

@johnnydropkicks I'm late to this video but I like that you mentioned noticing how they handle the book, that makes sense. They may be selling it, but if they handle it with reverence that's an attitude I like, because they are doing their part to preserve history. In the late 80's a comic shop opened near me, it was a father/son deal. Me and my friend would hang out with the son and help him order the amounts of titles based on what we were hearing from our fellow geeks in high school. The dad however would shove our orders at us with a cigar in his mouth. We would always do a quick walk past the store before going in and if it was the old man we'd be like I guess we go tomorrow. Sorry if I rambled, your comment brought back some fun memories 😊

Glad things worked out. I bought a Golden Age comic from a very reputable dealer in my area at Baltimore Comic Con for quite a bit. A few months later after the con, I finally got the chance to read it. The last page was missing, which was not noted. Did not affect the story though. I met with him at the next con. He was very nice and understanding. Willing to take the book back with full refund. However, I still wanted the book. It was a tough book. He gave me a a very big discount, over 75%. Things worked out great. I should have looked over the book. It was a lot of money. I have bought books from him in the past and never had a problem with any of his raw books. But, he backed his reputation and worked with me. Perfect ending.

I like the video a lot and thank you for posting. I like that you recognized a better approach to the situation moving forward. Don't let this prohibit you from buying raws from any era. I politely ask every time to flip through a book, check for ink additions, and also the staples to see if they've been played with. Trimming can be tough to identify, but I'm happy you addressed exactly what Matt Nelson said at the grading event. You have to keep an eye for something that isn't there and check the art of the book if any of the title or approval code is cut off. He also stated look at the centerfold of the book and check from there to see if the book has been trimmed. Keep this up!

Interesting and good advice, I had a similar thing happen when I was all ready at a convention to purchase Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #67, but I asked to open up the bag and check it out. Well lo and behold the Marvel Value stamp was missing, in it's place was a nice big cut out empty square. I mentioned it to the dealer whom said he had no idea it was cut out, and promptly walked away. Before I left the convention floor I went by the same dealer to see if he had marked the book and reduced the price. Nope! it was same price and same position on his wall display of books.

Not to detract from a good story (which is probably all true, although in a slightly different way) ... but there was no Marvel Value Stamp in Amazing Spider-Man # 67. ASM # 67 was published in 1968, and the Value Stamps started in 1974. But a coupon, a panel, a comic shop ad, or the prior owner's published letter to Marvel are all possibilities.

That's tough. Glad it got settled. And I appreciate you calling it a cautionary tale and acknowledging your side of it. I would've had the same fear and anxiety if I'd gotten home and noticed all that. And reaching out to them, I'd have anticipated that question they asked concerning if those were even the same books. We're in a time where you have to worry about what's really going on with raw books. With so many comics just being moved around and all the scams, there's so much to look out for. I mention in my videos a lot about how, especially at conventions, I'll ask the dealers to take books out so I can get a better look at them. And I do that for older comics that aren't even close to the $100 price mark. For more expensive comics, I'd need to look over them for a bit. What a time to be alive. Happy hunting!

Concerning the extra set of staples in the Tomb of Dracula # 10, I have seen that occur on enough books of that era to say that it sometimes happened, and that when it does, it looks pretty much like what you have shown (as though the guts were assembled 1st, and then the cover was added after the interior was already bound). And to be clear, I'm talking about comics I personally bought from the newsstands in the early '70's. I don't have an opinion about yours, though, but if I had to bet, my best bet would be that the book was legit. For whatever that's worth. Still, if you didn't like the book, and had that concern, then a conscientious seller should at least consider your request to return the book. As to the dynamics of the follow-up events, well, most escalations involve engagement on both sides.

Comic book collecting has always been a significant business but in the last 15 years or so it has become BIG business. With BIG business you will always get fraud, waste, abuse, etc. coming at you from all sides. I used to buy significant silver and gold age books frequently without too much worry. Nowadays, if a book is priced over two hundred bucks or so, I have to go with CGC. I personally break them out of their cases after purchase but at least there is the knowledge that I am probably getting what I paid for. With today's technology, sellers can get "creative" helping a book look better than it actually is. Buying raw significant issues at someplace such as a convention, where there probably aren't any buyer protections, is risky. People can bitch about Ebay all day but if you get a book and it's not what you were expecting, you can get your $$ back without any problem.

That’s crazy, amazing you were able to get your money back. Wonder if the fact that you recorded things helped? I think for most people they would be screwed. Totally agree with you, I stay away from any old raw comic. I don’t know why but it always gives off a deceit/scam vibe. Either the seller trying to pass off for a higher grade or hide the real condition, I mean I just ask myself why in the world it would not be graded by this point. I even think, hmmm maybe they got the grade and it isn’t what they hoped so they cracked it open and trying to sell it off as a higher grade than it actually is. I know I’m probably wrong but that’s just the perception I get on old raw book worth hundreds or thousands. Definitely agree with the approach error, never a good idea to throw in legal action. I’ve seen a book that had extra staples due to a manufacturing defect, but the extra stapes in your books are from different comic ages. They claimed that they bought the “House of Secrets” #92 at an estate sale, but it takes someone with fairly good knowledge on comic restoration/repair to be able to completely flatten the book out, add staples to the book by using one of those long reach staplers, and to be able to press the book back to it’s folded over form. If the estate sale was for a person that was really into comic collecting (and repair), their books would’ve been given to a family member or they would have been sold through a more profitable channel than an estate sale. I can understand a dealer purchasing a book where they didn’t notice those flaws and then sold it as normal, but when they state that they purchased it six months ago and at an estate sale pretty much guarantees that they were the ones responsible for this. This dealer seems to be a quite large, knowledgeable and profitable merchant who has been in the comic business for years. They wouldn’t have missed flaws like this on books that they purchased. Also, they seem like they would be knowledgeable enough about restoration and repair to be able to make these alterations to the books themselves; or are connected enough to know a guy who could.

Hey what’s up this is Bob in Connecticut anyway it’s too bad what happened? Well I just wonder if you graded those books and they were all coming back restored I wonder if you still would have gotten more bang for your buck. It’s hard to say.. I bought a Superman and Batman 1 both dealers told me they were restored I didn’t care. I paid the $12,500 for the superman it came back 5.0 no trimming moderate professional restoration and the Batman I paid $10,500 and that came back with trimming 5.0 restored.. I kind of knew what I was getting, but obviously I can make lots of money if I sell these books. My other restored story when I was a kid I picked up amazing fantasy 15 a RAW copy from the comic book newspaper comic spires guide for only $450. It came back 8.0 restored no trimming.. I understand everything you have been through. It’s always a gamble buying.RAW. Anyway, I’m not a bartender anymore if I want to buy something very very good now I would have to sell one of my high-end books.

If you didn't do your due diligence when buying those books then "Shame on you" its not the dealers obligation to do the investigation if these comics were restored, as most of these comic shops buy these in bulk and often just stick a price tag on them to sell them for more than they purchased them for. These mistakes are on you and not the dealers; UNLESS the dealers knowingly sold these to you as unrestored when they were restored... Chicken or the Egg...

I disagree with a few of these comments on here. As a comic dealer, it is their responsibility to ensure their high value comics they sell are in their original, unrestored condition. It’s integral to their reputation as a seller. People complain about shop owners eBay pricing at the counter because they don’t have time to price their back issues and how they shouldn’t be selling comics if they don’t have the time to price them. I think that same energy should apply.

There is no such thing as good deal on a major key at any con. Any great deal you find at comic con is going to be a spec book, ghost book, minor key, etc. I personally don't mind buying restored keys if the price is right. Great place holders for books. I also don't think dealers necessarily have to disclose if a book is restored. They might not know for one. If it was me I would have just Eaten the loss as A 5,500 hundred dollar lesson. I'd feel too bad returning the books and would feel as though it was just as much my fault for not spotting the restoration.

Probably bought them from a 3rd party cheap and was just flipping them for a profit quick thinking you would'nt look either and when you finally found out it would be too late. Also maybe a little bit of a coward since he did'nt want to see you again in person that's why he sent someone else.

I actually think you did the right thing by threatening legal action off the bat. No, it doesn’t start things off on a friendly note but this was not a time to be friendly, in my opinion. These guys sold you three high-dollar comics with significant restoration that was not disclosed and was detectable with a little effort. The assertion at 4:15 that “we’ve never had a problem” at this show - wow, misfortune sure was saving up for this one transaction, wasn’t it? I’m betting they knew they had restored comics and just decided to play the “it’s on you” game. From what I can tell, the seller did not express any sort of embarrassment over the situation, or talk about how “my reputation is important enough that I will give you a full refund as fast as we can work out the details.” No, that dude was annoyed that he got caught and was motivated to make things right because you demonstrated that you were prepared to go to the mat. If you’d been nice you’d probably still own those comics. Yeah, do a page-by-page examination next time but that doesn’t excuse their BS one iota. Rant over.
