RETURN TO PLANET THANET: Manston, Wildwood, & Reculver

Ойын-сауық

In this FOUR-PART series, I return to the KENT coast, where I lived for 20 years. Beginning on the ISLE OF THANET, known by the locals as "PLANET THANET".
In the FIERY FINALE to my weeklong THANET odyssey, I return to R.A.F. MANSTON, also known as MANSTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, where 25 years ago I was given UNPRECIDENTED access to film the AVIATION FIREFIGHTERS in TRAINING at the DEFENCE FIRE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE. Myself and two colleagues were given UNRESTRICTED ACCESS to film all areas of the fire ground, and we spent two weeks following the trainees, day and night.
The footage I use here is all from my PRIVATE PERSONAL ARCHIVE, consisting of material I filmed on my cheap camcorder, so I apologise for the poor quality of the shots. However, they still show the SPECTACULAR and DRAMATIC nature of the AVIATION AIRCRAFT FIRES which were ignited and extinguished multiple times daily.
Sadly, according to research I carried out since completing this episode, the FIRE SCHOOL is now permanently closed.
However, when I visited the site for this episode, there was still an active presence of some sort on the base, as I was swiftly SEEN-OFF BY SECURITY!
My next stop was the DOG AND DUCK at PLUCKS GUTTER, an amusingly named place that provided an UNEXPECTED and MOVING DISCOVERY.
I then visited the WILDWOOD TRUST at WEALDEN FOREST PARK, CANTERBURY. This is essentially a ZOO where foreign and indigenous WILD ANIMALS are exhibited. I didn't like the small size of the cages, but apparently the trust conducts important CONSERVATION and RE-INTRODUCTION work, returning endangered species back into their natural habitat, so that is commendable and worthy of support, even though I still think the enclosures are too small!
My final stop in this journey was at RECULVER TOWERS, a 12th CENTURY MEDIEVAL CHURCH occupying the same site as the RUINS of a more ANCIENT ROMAN FORT.

Well that was a wonderful 4 part series Kit... very very well done! I understand completely when you mentioned your cat Frodo that died last year and how you haven't got over it yet..... my cat Olly died two years ago and i don't think i will ever get over it... i miss him SO much and just want him back here with me, but i know all i have are the memories. The thing is he was more than a cat to me.... i'm sure you understand what i mean. On a happier note i am looking forward to your next adventure x

Thank you, my friend. 😘 Yes, I totally understand. We're both still grieving. I've lost 6 cats in my life, Frodo was the last, and I'll never get over any of them. So sorry to hear about Olly. 🤗😘x

Kent, the old ancestral stomping grounds. Nice old ruined church or abbey. Bryson is hilarious.

Yes, the towers at Reculver are actually two different ruins on the same site; a 12th century church, and an ancient Roman fort. I should have given more details in the episode, but I drifted into a musical montage instead. Lol. And yes, Bryson is one of my favourite writers. 😘x

Oh wow that you got to film at the airport years ago and for including some never-before-seen footage! Aww that the television pilot was abandoned. It's spectacular footage! I have never heard of face flossing 😂 people here do 'wash their face', but that usually involves water and not a bandage lol. Aww for the Satellite Navigation Error. Aww shame we couldn't see inside the museum (my boyfriend knows a lot about WWII planes (and tanks)). Plucks Gutter, what an unusual name! The river looks nice! Frodo!! Aww Frodo 💕. Aww for it being a zoo and not a wild park. I agree, the animals should be well looked after and have enrichment activities and enough space etc. Yes quality of life should definitely be considered. Ah yes makes sense. Reculver towers looks impressive, a nice gateway to Thanet! I'm glad you found it a fun visit. The world is your home, that is a comforting thought indeed!

I was actually thinking about you quite a lot while I was editing this episode, and I worried that the firefighting footage may cause some sensory overload. I still think I may have over used it a bit, but I'm glad you don't seem to have suffered to badly from it. It was very exciting to be in the midst of such action, and I have very fond memories of that experience. 😊 I did consider staying until the museum opened, but I had a lot planned for that day, and I wasn't sure how interested my viewers might be. I also was getting a bit too much attention from security by that point! lol 😉😁 The world is indeed my home, and I'm glad I get to share it with good people like you. Thank you for watching, Gaia. 💕😘x

Wow, you got to film firefighters so close, that's so cool! I like the way you integrate archival footage seamlessly to your trip footage. It really adds up and creates a more compelling narrative. Aww, Frodo. It always moves me when you talk about her. That zoo looked a bit depressing and lonely, perhaps due to lacking visitors. I agree that animals shouldn't be kept in captivity, I'd much rather see them running free in nature. But then, I'd rather see them safe in zoos than being hunted by humans. The whole idea of zoos I find ethically deeply problematic. Reculver Towers seem beautiful and filled with history. Nice shot of the moon between the towers! "Go go go" lol yeah you tell her xD This was a great final episode, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series, excellent job! Be proud of yourself, Kit!

Thank you, Jere. 😘 I'm glad you liked the archive material. I was worried that I may have over-used it. Yes, animals. Sadness. Much sadness. You know my pain. No need to say any more. Reculver is a strangely compelling place, which is unfortunate when the crowds are swarming! Frankly it's a miracle that my only words were 'Go, go, go...' I was rather grumpy at that point and my brain was swearing like a sailor! 😉😘x

Where are we going next? Btw as a pedant, stuffy literature major, I feel compelled to point out that "You can't go home again." very much predates my fellow American expat, Bill Bryson. Thomas Wolfe published a novel with that title in 1940. But that's immaterial really. We all need to focus on Walt Whitman's _The Song of the Open Road_ Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. *Thanks for letting us ride along.*

My dear fellow, thank you so much for watching, and please feel free to be as pedantic as you wish. I love pedants! Being one myself, I must cheekily mention that I didn't actually suggest Bryson was the first. Merely that he said it - which he did. 😜 But I thoroughly enjoyed your literary contributions, and in a literary vein (and to answer your question) I'll shortly be visiting the homes of two famous literary figures, although I think I'll keep their identities secret for a little while longer. 😉 You are most welcome for the ride-along, and I'm most grateful that you enjoyed it. I hope you'll stick around for the Further Adventures of Kit and Willy. 😁 😘x

@@2bsirius Pedantry is indeed gender neutral, as was my use of the word 'fellow' - in its gender neutral context of a 'person in the same position or involved in the same activity', namely pedantry. I hope you weren't offended. 😊 Btw, my husband is from a culture that ignores gender pronouns and is indifferent to gender generally, so we tend to not think about such things - which can be complicated in a world where people tend to obsess over their pronouns. It's a minefield. 🙄😉x

Kevvie!!!🥰💕😘 How lovely to see you again. I didn't know you were still watching. Thank you so much for sticking around through my transition. 🤗 Yes, the Frodo bit was very hard to edit, and there were a lot of tears. Much sadder for me than the zoo, because despite the small enclosures which I hated, I found out that they are busily reintroducing those animals back into the wild, where they have been extinct for generations. So it's a necessary evil, I guess. Anyway, thank you so much for watching. 😘x

Oh and i forgot to say i agree with you totally about not liking to see caged animals.... or birds..... that's why i don't like going to my local zoo in Chester, because it makes me sad, but i know they are doing a great job in keeping endangered animals, and they try very very hard to give them the best life possible, but i still don't like it, i saw a baby elephant there last time and i felt so sad that the zoo is the only life she will ever know
