An Apology, An Explanation, and an Expedition | Return from the Abyss

Ойын-сауық

I've been away for over a month, battling depression and the urge to quit Vanlife. But thanks to an enormous amount of support and kindness from my regular viewers, and boosted by a surprise comment from ‪@phillyandkeely‬ I had a little spurt of activity and made an attempt at a return.
Thank you to Philly and Keely for giving me an unexpected boost in morale, and thank you to all my friends on KZread who consistently pick me up when I'm feeling down.
I referenced one of my old videos in this episode - The Elephant in the Van. Here it is:

Oh, I got your email - thank you so much, I was blown away - and I'll be replying properly as soon as I can. I am over the moon that you're still watching. I thought you'd lost interest. So good to see your video Kit! The trouble with the English countryside is that there's not a lot you can park beside or walk on. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, as and when they are uploaded. Happy travels where and whenever the mood catches you!

Thank you, Sandra. 🥰 It's good to be back. You're right, in a way, but actually most of our countryside is accessible by foot - even private land - due to the zillions of public footpaths, rambler's rights, and so forth. And our national parks are almost entirely useable for most activities, and yet remain largely unspoilt. But yes, parking beside (or god forbid ON) any area of attractive countryside is increasingly difficult. People just don't like vehicles - especially campervans. I'm glad you still enjoy my videos. There's a new one - a proper one - in the edit suite at the moment, which should be ready in the next few days. Hopefully it will make up for my shaky attendance record of late. 😘x

Hey Kit, nice to see you back. First off, please don't feel you need to apologise to us for not making any videos. The main thing I think most were worried about was yourself, after all that's the most important thing really. Mental Health can be a real struggle, I'm experiencing this first hand over the last few months, it's totally new to me but I already feel how terrible it can be so you just do you and keep up up to date (so we know you are okay) Don't put pressure on yourself with your videos. Van Life isn't all about Beach shots and the perfect Insta pic. More and more people are preferring to watch the real world van life videos, break downs, things not working, raining days where your sat in the van, running out of gas, water, fuel, breaking down - these are all real life and a true account of van life, of course there will be times it's perfect, but that is life too, sometimes you have a great day and the next boom!!! So take each day at a time and film when you want or feel able to. Don't worry about a series or anything like that, you will have plenty of time to do these when both you're feeling up for it and time/money is a bit easier. You can always do some wild camping nights in your local area, would just be as good a video. Enjoyed the catch up and it's great to see you up and about. Keep safe and well and I look forward to your next vlog :)

  • @kitsworld

Thank you so much. I totally agree with you, and that's the new plan I'm putting into effect. It's hard to reset my ideas about what I want to do, and stick more to what I actually CAN do. Despite my awareness of my own limitations, I still wish I could be like my favourite channels, doing the things they do, making the films they make. It's harder because I almost can, if not for the physical, mental, and financial restrictions. As a filmmaker I still feel like I could do it, but those other (major) things hold me back. It's very frustrating. But I'm coming to terms with it. There will always be a battle inside me, between my ambition and reality. That is just part of who I am. And getting older is hard too. But I'm in love with my Hubby, and he looks after me very well. I'm so sorry to hear about your suffering. Depression is a real bitch. I can tell from the way you write that you are self aware and intelligent enough to keep it under control, but if it ever gets too much please seek help. Everyone needs someone to lean on. It may seem kind of stupid, but when I was 20, and in a very bad depression, I climbed to the top of the Dreamland tower in Margate, stripped off all my clothes, and screamed, naked, into the night. I just needed to release. Then I lay on my back looking up at the stars, and realised I'd felt this exact level of despair many times in my life, yet the bad times had always passed, and I'd had some great ones since. It was kind of a stupid epiphany, but I've often thought about that night's revelation in the dark times since, and it helps surprisingly well. Mostly, I think, because I arrived at it myself, so it wasn't just meaningless words of "comfort" from someone else. Anyway, I hope your clouds part soon and you get a glimpse of the stars. And thank you for all your kind words and thoughts. 😘x

And thank you for being the impetus to get me out filming again! Btw, Hubby and I will be watching your latest episode soon. We were shocked at what happened to you, and I'm guessing this is the episode that catches us up with that event. It couldn't have happened to a less deserving couple of vanlifers. Anyway, no doubt I'll be using too many words in a comment on that video later, as well as here now. I am kind of babbly. Hubby likes it, but I think he's the only one! lol. I couldn’t agree more with you Kit about making videos for you and not worrying about the clicks and algorithm (as it sucks!) - I’ve had a similar epiphany regarding KZread and Instagram (which is even worse than KZread if you can believe it!) because I’ve just accepted that if I find things are no longer enjoyable or affect me negatively, then I just shouldn’t do them. I take regular breaks now from social media and don’t beat myself up at all if the numbers and clicks stay low - I’m not doing it for that any more. I am happy to see you’re looking after yourself.
