    The ending is perfect, because it's all contained in that shot of Guybrush after he says "I'll meet you down there" What people don't understand is that whatever the game would have shown there would have been a lie, no matter what, because Guybrush was telling his son a story. All of it was made nice for him, think about the fact that sword fights are done through insult competitions. That shot of him on the bench is him reflecting on the good times he had as an outlaw, while also seeing what he loves about the way he lives now. What gives that such incredible closure is that the entire series is about someone who desperately wants to be a pirate, and now you see that he's not only succeeded at that, but grown beyond it. You see one more shot of him thinking about the fun he had, and then he goes to rejoin his family. They could have done more, but that shot alone justifies this ending for me

    What gave me peace with the ending was hearing about the one where he has the key to monkey island but never opened it because he chose his family instead cause he realized it was a means to an end and sometimes that can lead to destruction (mop tree etc.)

    Felt perfect to me. I was a bit worried how the game would handle the continuity from previous games and how this could wrap up properly (as I couldn't think of anything that would satisfy - but I think they nailed it. I love how the banana post credit scene is a reference to the ending of Inception. I remember Chistopher Nolan saying the ending of Inception is less about the spinning top and if Cobb is still in a dream, but more about that he's finally reunited with his children. Similar to Inception it doesn't really matter what the Secret of Monkey Island is or if Guybrush is actually in an amusement park or whatever's happening there at the end. It's about him telling a story to his kid. If and what is true about it, doesn't really matters. Also shoutout to Jared Willebeek-LeMair and Zst0rme here in the comments. I really love your interpretation how the whole Monkey Island series are very sanitized stories a dad tells his kid about his old pirate days.

  • @metalsonic8888

    @metalsonic8888

    Except that if the reality of the ending doesn't matter, why bother bringing it up at all? If it doesn't matter if Inception is a dream or not then it doesn't need the final scene with the top because it doesn't add anything. They could make it explicit that it was real, fake, or not even bring up the possibility of either at all and Cobb would still be united with his kids. All the top scene does is pose an irrelevant and unanswerable question to the viewer. If what the secret is doesn't matter, then why go through with all this wishy washy bullshit implying none of the games were real? Like obviously Guybrush isn't a historical figure; the games are clearly fiction. So why waste time and energy to deliberately remind the player of that instead of just finishing the story you were telling?

    After playing through this again, I've been thinking about the ending. It's either brilliant but disappointing, or just plain disappointing. I'm not certain which one it is. The game makes several puns alluding to it not necessarily being better to see a story through to it's conclusion. Like the whole "some stories are better that way" line of dialogue. Maybe that is the point. That the ending will never be as satisfying as the journey, which it just so happens, is absolutely true here. I thoroughly enjoy the adventure all the way up until the very end, where it suddenly just falls flat. Maybe this was a clever way of Ron Gilbert and the team cautioning players against needing an answer to everything. Maybe it was even a nod to the idea that just maybe...none of us want to see Monkey Island actually end. I know that I'm left wanting more after shutting off all the lights! Perhaps a statement about the fleeting nature of life and how one must live for the moments, rather than some future gain. Perhaps it's really meant to be an allegory for the way corporations get rich off of the amusement of others, much like Stan is seen doing at the end of the game. Or, yet still, it could be none of that and it was just meant to shock and confuse longtime players and newbies alike. Truth be told, I can't definitely say what the point was, but it's certainly memorable! However, I have come to a definite conclusion regarding the story itself. I no longer believe this tale actually occured within the Monkey Island universe. I believe it is a tall tale that Guybrush tells to lil' Guybrush and that these exact events never actually transpired. Which is why Elaine comments on the fact that the ending to this particular story keeps changing each time he tells it. I also prefer to believe this is a "hypothetical" adventure because it excuses the continuity errors in the timeline, such as Guybrush referencing Morgan LeFlay, Murray, Herman Toothrot, the fact that LeChuck is still alive and back to being a zombie...etc. In any event, these games are a joy to play and if this game has taught me one thing for sure, it's this: I don't want Monkey Island to end!

    hahaha they are great tales indeed (i just finished them) but that takes place between MI3 and MI4 so not a real ending but more of a 'interquel-story', but it does take out the whole 'present time gimmicks' such as the grog machines and neon-letters (the grog machine at Stan's is even turned into a real Grog barrel in Legend of Monkey Island), so i think that means that the producers of Sea of Thieves really want this all to be real (the adventures of Guybrush) :-)

    At first I was like, what? Then I felt kinda cheated. Then I realised it was ingenious, and the best possible way to end the game (and potentially the franchise, if no further games are made). In a nutshell, the ending lets players pick whatever they wanted the ending to be, and makes that true (as shown in the post credit scenes). In one way this can feel like a cop-out, but in another it's a clever solution to the game's alleged inability to live up to the years of mystery around MI2's cliffhanger ending and the question of "the Secret." But digging deeper, it becomes clear that there's certain immutable plot points that must therefore be canon: Guybrush and Elaine are married, they go on sea adventures together, and they tell their son stories of those adventures, embellishing to some extent but still based on some level of truth. The true story of this game is the passing of the torch, inviting the younger generation's imagination to lead them in their own adventures. The whole narrative is framed as a story Guybrush is telling his son. His son, by extent, is the player, navigating the story and trying to make sense of the whimsical way Guybrush chooses to tell it - but at the end of the day, it's just a story, a story whose end is designed to inspire Boybrush to pursue his own adventures and create his own stories. I personally hope they make a further sequel, but if not, this is a fantastic swan song to the franchise.

    To me it felt like Guybrush is loosing his memory, he looks old and sick, he's confused and he doesn't know where he is. Elaine keeps talking to him like he's sick and she's a caring nurse. She felt weird all game, ever since her explanation about the ripped picture I got the feeling something wasn't right. She also never says "love you" back whenever Guybrush says it. It's like he's suffering from alzheimers or something, and his mind is coping by making him the main character in stories about the rides surrounding him in the theme park. I think she's moved on after seeing his lust for the treasure trumps his feelings for her and her projects, and he just doesn't remember or doesn't want to remember, so he's just making up stories. It's like this was visiting day at the hospital or whatever, so she took their son to see Guybrush and take him out on a trip to the theme-park with all the characters from his favorite stories. It all just felt wrong.. When she said she had a new adventure, I almost felt like she was saying "Time to go back to the hospital", and he's sitting there like "yea.. I know.. Just gimme a second..". I think the ending is really dark and didn't fit the Monkey Island franchise at all.

    I guess I'm one of the few people satisfied by the ending. Ron Gilbert always wanted to end the series with "the whole Monkey Island series was just an amusement park". But he saw how fans disliked that in Monkey 2, and how they invented their own headcanon that "The Secret" was some huge revelation or plot point. So, he gave fans a chance to choose their own ending. "It was an amusement park," "It was all real", or "The Secret doesn't matter" are all options, and you pick what you want to believe. When you highlight the door to return to Monkey Island, the text even says "Deny what I thought I saw and return to the world I know". He did the ending he wanted, but also gave fans the option to choose the ending they wanted. Also, the whole story is also a metaphor for the fans. You, the player (Guybrush) are obsessed with chasing The Secret, even as Elaine warns that nothing could live up to your expectations. But she continues to support you and just wants you to enjoy the adventure.

    Well, I really want to ask you which ending you chose? If you think the theme park or "The Notebook" phase of the adventure was the ending, then you missed it lol Leaving with Elaine provides alternative endings, to returning back through the catacombs. They reference endings to The Lord of the Rings, Inception. And the Notebook. Maybe even "Goonies" lol But none are set in stone. Alternate endings are made for fun. I picked the one where I return to the world I knew back in the catacombs. And Guybrush and Elaine are shown sailing off on their ship together with swords raised high, suggesting, more adventures to come. If you want to know which is "the real ending" then Do not eat the forbidden fruit, i.e. - do not believe the Stan Theme Park is real, and don't take the key, and don't open the chest. You'll get the triumphant ending, the more official kind. But the devs kind of missed an opportunity here. It isn't 100% choose your own adventure and choose your own ending... probably to be continued. Edit: returning to the world you knew (best without taking the key), also is a requirement for a trophy in the Playstation version. That also suggests it is the "official ending")

    All those fans with extremely high expectations can't be satisfied. That's why there are different endings. Because it doesn't matter what the writers do. People complain. I personally love the ending(s) even if it felt wrong in the first few minutes. Elaine herself says that Guybrush's narration of the end of the story gets crazier every time. I don't think it's the real end of the story. Even if it is. Return was a lot of fun, even if some of the puzzles were too easy and too linear and a lot of potential was not used (example Scurvy Island or Terror Island). It was a very Don Quixote ending that was slightly disappointing after getting to the end area and realizing where they were going with it. I like to imagine that this part of the story is Threepwood sensoring what was a gruesome climatic battle where he finally killed Lechuck to obtain the secret (in my choice, riches.) He knows his son re-enacts the tales, so my thought is he doesn't want him to make play of what was the worst part of the adventure to Threepwood.

    I think you all are looking for an ending that you would never be satisfied with. Elaine and Guybrush are just Carnival Entertainers: why do you think his son is with them in the first place? You can lie to your son but that's not really what happened - if you read the note from the developers in the scrapbook they conclude by saying they were young when they made the games and grew up to be old and having kids of their own. The true secret being: they wanted to tell you all that the fantasy they made when younger was just that a fantasy, there was no true monkey island, no magic, no lechuck. The previous game even hinted at this - this was just a trip down memory lane and a way for the developers to say once and for all that there was no monkey island. (A classic Jedi Mind Trick). I'm happy to live in this fantasy that there really was a secret and go down this youtube rabbit hole where a bunch of you debate what it was but, far as I can tell - the developers grew up and had no more story to tell. You all just wanted an ending that wouldn't ever exist and I'm fine with that... I came to enjoy the game, not the ending. As for Guybrush lying to Boybrush: it's clear this is just what you would do as a storyteller: you weave the story to be your own and then you leave the person you told the ending to to make up their own minds what the ending meant. The ending was already told in the other game and you guys couldn't accept it the first time - having it happen here again repeating the same ending as told in this game just confirms it. Sure they could recon the ending here and say BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED! But from a narrative perspective, this ending makes the most sense and there just isn't an alternative ending that would satisfy me like Elaine says. The game is what it is, the fans wanted there to be more but there isn't Ron told you it's over, so really I think you should just accept that and move on.

    There was no Monkey Island 3a planned back in the day. Ron has wanted to make another one for a while, but he had no grand plan he'd been holding onto for 30 years. And you don't get to choose the secret. You only got to chose what Guybrush told his son about it. From Ron Gilbert's blog, "When I made another Monkey Island", 1st of May 2022: "People talk a lot about Monkey Island 3a as if it was the game I would have made after Monkey Island 2 had I stayed at Lucasfilm. Here's the deal. The totality of that idea was "Guybrush chases the demon pirate LeChuck to hell and Stan is there." That's it. That's all it was. Games, movies, and books don't come out fully formed. They start as a morsel of an idea and then all the hard work begins. Roger Ebert had a great quote that I am constantly reminding myself of: "The muse visits during the act of creation, not before." Had I stayed at Lucasfilm I might have started with that idea, but by the time the game was done it would have been something completely different and better. And that is exactly what Return to Monkey Island is. When Dave and I first got together to talk about Return to Monkey Island we had a nearly blank slate. We talked over ideas we'd had over the years including one of mine where Guybrush wakes up 3000 years in the future on a snowball Earth. We talked about my original "hell" idea but other Monkey Island games had already done much of that (by pure coincidence) and there was little point in rehashing it. The one thing I wanted to do was start the new game right where LeChuck's Revenge ended, and that became the one unmovable stone."

The nearest non-auto save was 1 hour of gameplay before the ending. The auto-save ending changed each time, of course AFTER the chest was opened, as well. No way am I going back to run through the last hour of the game (might take 15 minutes knowing what to do) just to have to sit through HOURS of the SAME CREDITS each time to see the ending. [Furthermore, even the claim of grey areas insinuates that the truth cannot be known which makes it another form of the 'relativists fallacy' {look it up}- which makes it self-contradictory & self-defeating, (ie wrong).]

    I think I would have been happy with just the shirt instead of being implied that the game and, possibly by extension, the whole series is Guybrush making it all up or exaggerating his stories. And then there's this "whatever you choose is the right ending" angle that just makes me feel worse and more dissatisfied, especially coming off the back of Tales which felt like a nice epic conclusion to Guybrush's and Lechuck's rivalry.

    Also I didn't like that they implied the crap that was MI4 and tales as canon. Instead Ron Gilbert should have discarded everything after MI2 and done his version of MI3 (I like curse but it was not Rons game). It feels like the story of MI2 was never concluded. I've been around for new star wars, new shenmue etc, everything is just dissapointing, Maybe it's better just to let things be. Meh.

    @@OG_Deadpool My sequence was Curse->Tales->Secret SE->Revenge SE->Escape (could not finish because 3D art and sound were abysmal, basically hadn't aged too well)->Return; and I would say that Tales was the best one IMO, the facial expressions still hold up, the locations were more fun, some of the puzzles were a bit crap, but I liked how the puzzles integrated in the story and some of their redux had a cool impact of the emotional ending. I also really liked the implication that Vodoo Lady was somehow responsible for the events happening in the games. I also thought that Morgan LeFlay and Guybrush had fresh chemistry, something like father/daughter or brother/younger sister.
