Return of The Warning on TCV! Vocal ANALYSIS of "Choke"

Ойындар

It's been since my old studio that I listened to these three sisters from Mexico absolutely slaying it, and before my friend Lzzy Hale gave one of her guitars to Dany Villareal in one of their live performances with Halestorm. Is that too long to listen to The Warning? I think so. Let's kick this year off with one of their bigger tunes, and let me know in the comments which The Warning I should check out next!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to The Warning performing "Choke" for the first time.

One thing about The Warning live, is that they never limit themselves. Dany's voice is generally harsher and more raw live, because she doesn't hold back. Some might say it can be a bad thing (not musically, but in terms of taking care of her voice etc), but it's a big part of why people always say that you NEED to see them live. There's so much passion in every performance, and they've been performing live for the better part of a decade now!

No better example than Martirio from this same show. When her voice cracks on that wail towards the end. So much emotion and passion that she sometimes overreaches. But, that might also be one of the reasons her voice is so much stronger now. She keeps pushing the boundaries and learns where to pull back just short of the edge.

The Drummer is also a fantastic vocalist. I would listen to ""23" live from Teatro Metropolitan next. Or The Revenant" from same concert. They have a new album coming and Dany's performance of Hell You Call a Dream is fantastic live. But there are only fanccam versions now. I am pretty sure a pro shot version will be coming in near future. New album is out June 28.

Since I was young and got influenced by my uncle’s to listening to metal, I thought metal was supposed to be one way only. Then I realized that there was so much metal out there to enjoy. I grew up in the 80s listening to Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax Testament and so many more of the “thrash” scene. With my friends I couldn’t tell them that I like Poison, Motley Crue or Ratt. When I got older I just said screw that. I love all metal. These girls are the result of that. Their parents showed them all the great metal from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Then they mixed in their likes of the newer generation. All of that went into the pot and The Warning was what came out. They defy while defining. They might not look the part but they rock just as hard as anyone else. They are young but write songs that a 40 or 50 year old couldn’t even imagine writing. All I can say is that they rock! Thanks again for your reaction! Love how you breakdown what hear and sometimes can’t put to words. Have a great day! 🤘

So great that you came back to The Warning. I have traveled more than 10k miles across North America in the past two years to see them play. In more than 40 years of concert going, I have only ever done that with Rush. As you see in this show, they are amazing live. It is astonishing to me how they can simultaneously hit as hard as any band I have seen, yet still make it feel like they are singing to just you. Their rapport with the audience is something not seen often. I hope you come back again and do one where Paulina sings lead (Dust 2 Dust from this same show would be a great pick). I think I can speak for The Warning Amy that we are so pleased you enjoyed this. I am convinced that the future of rock is female. And if The Warning are leading what is to come, I am all in for that!!

Ale's voice, by the way, is kind of the forbidden fruit of the band. She doesn't seem to care much for the limelight and has said several times that she doesn't like to sing lead, although she has done so several times, when her big sister needed it, being ill or whatever. She's happy with her role singing backup. That's why in earlier live videos of this song, when the instruments cut out and you just had Ale singing "let me drown", you could hear the audience go wild.

You must check out their first cover of Enter Sandman from 10 years ago and then check their version live from this same performance. One more suggestion. At this same concert, they performed a song called “Revenant”, mostly acoustic. It’s a beautiful song with all three sisters plus a guitarist on 12-string performing out front. Paulina sings lead vocals, Dany and Ale sing quiet harmony with quiet instrumental accompaniment. I think this is a perfect example of how a technically imperfect vocal performance magnifies it’s beauty and emotional impact. I hope you get a chance to review it. MB

What amazes me as much as anything is that this is already the 14th (technically 13th since intermission was Pau on a recording of Breathe) song in this concert. And she maintains this power all the way through the full 22 (technically 21) songs.

Paulina and Daniela both pour their entire souls into every performance, it's absolutely beautiful to watch. My most distinct memory from seeing them live is how Pau had a glowing smile the entire show. Alejandra usually plays it cool though, occasionally letting a smirk shine through while nailing her basslines with absolute precision. Revenant from this same concert is unreal, particularly from a vocal perspective. Or you can reach a bit further back to see their acoustic performance of Sinister Smiles if you really want to get a feel for the dynamics of the three sister's voices.

Hello Elizabeth. I'm stoked that you uploaded a reaction on The Warning's "Choke" from the Metropolitan concert. It's a performance that very much symbolizes what makes The Warning special in general, and how far they have progressed. With your very first analysis after the first refrain, you pick out the very key to TW's success: It's their compositions, and what they make out of their possibilites of a three instruments combo (sometimes four when they add keyboard/piano) with three different voices. Their compositions were good from the start, and now (probably also influenced by an experienced producer) they've taken it to another level. Add to that their passion, their on-stage chemistry, Pau's excellent drumming, and Dani's ever growing energetic vocals, and you've got all the ingredients for a very good and successful rock band with (hopefully) quite some longevity. Thanks for this reaction. 😀🔥 As for my recommendation(s) for a future TW reaction: "Amour" of "Narcisista" from the same live concert. And if you want to go back to the very beginnings of TW (when Dani, the oldest, was 16 yrs old) check out "Unmendable" from the TEDxUniversityofNevada 2017 concert. If you want something relatively new, I suggest "More" from the The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

Ale singing is the “most replayed” because it is well documented that she, for whatever reason, shies away from singing, and when us fans do get a chance to see it, we need more of it! I saw them perform at a small venue in Las Vegas and they were amazing! So much energy in addition to very professional level instrumental and vocal abilities. I am a huge fan of these sisters and can’t wait to see them live again! Your next reaction/analysis of them should be one of their songs on their new, upcoming album, “Keep Me Fed”. The reason why the part where Ale sings by herself Is the most rewatched It's because when she sings lead, it's like finding a unicorn because seeing her sing lead even for a moment is a rare sight, she has a tremendous voice just like her sisters do but she has said she doesn't like singing lead. And us loyal diehard The Warning Army members love seeing her sing lead now and again. And we all hope oneday she'll come around and sing lead on one song on a new album sometime in the future. There are videos you can find on youtube, live performances where Ale Does sing lead. The 2 songs that I know she will sing lead on in lieu of Dany sometimes is Hunter and Red Hands Never Fade, two great songs by the way. Also anything you react to from this Teatro metropolitan 2022 concert in Mexico City You will not be disappointed.
