Return of the Turn, Episode 11 - Mogul Skiing at Mary Jane
Спорт
In this episode, Marcus travels to Mary Jane at Winter Park Resort in Colorado to ski the "mogul capital of the world". Teaming up with Tats (Chris Tatsuno) the pair learns why this is one of the only places left that doesn't groom their runs and why that's a special thing. Featuring Mary Jane locals Freddy Mooney and Julie Ray.

So I'm a snowboarder and stumbled upon this video. Why is this fun? It looks horrific time on your knees. Is it literally just because it's harder than a groomed run?

@@dan.r9220 snowboarders with bumps even harder and better. I'm speaking from experience. Granted, Jake Burton did not design the snowboard for bumps Maryland for Backcountry and powder. But they turned out to be a versatile platform for virtually any condition on or off area.

@@sorenwolff4954 right, but why do people find doing either sport on this type of terrain fun? That's my question.

@@dan.r9220 There are some people in this world and from my experience quite a few who find great satisfaction in challenging themselves with new experiences and overcoming obstacles both mental and physical like bumps, to be very gratifying. If one is choosing to ride lift access areas and consciously choose not to ride and bumps you might as well not ride lift access areas. Because from my experience a few days after any snow storm most areas look like a golf ball. And once again you are limiting yourself to the train you can ride on very few days. Simply put you're limiting experiences that life offers you though they may be challenging.
Anyone can jump off a cliff, you don't even have to know HOW to ski, few can pound down through moguls. You guys make it look beautiful, great skiing in great conditions. There's a few runs they never groom at my local resort, Mt. Rose, and one of them is right under the lift and like how Marcus answered the question, "Why do you ski?", "for the guys in the chair above me". You're performing for them and you make the best performance out there. You're an opera singer of the slopes or Grace Vanderwaal with her ukulele! Keep it real!

“If you think that moguls suck, it’s not the moguls that suck…. It’s something else” is the funniest and truest line from this vid
There are generations of Mary Jane bumpers who greatly appreciate this! One of the best ROTT thus far.
TAT'S!!!!!!! Tatsuno's skiing just gets smoother. Love how silent his body is. Nice work gents!
“Skiing people’s fears and emotions” 😂
“It’s not that you can’t ski moguls. It’s that you can’t ski, and the moguls just show it.”
I never really 'got' moguls until I took a 1:1 lesson at Winter Park to learn the right way to ski them. I'm told they have the best moguls, best mogul skiers and best instructors and since then I've loved and seek out mogul runs.
Great episode, but Marcus needs to come out east! I think it would be a Return of the Turn classic. We never have lost our love for a perfect turn on less than perfect snow!

I'm no Johnny Mosley!! Come to Whitefish we'll ski some fog!
It’s been years and years for me, but back when I was at my max, Mary Jane was so worth the trip from Vermont. Every bump skier should go 👍👍
my brother and i skied the renowned mary jane mogul run back in 1977 /while we were at a elbert series fis gs/sl on the winter park race hill./ the run was a challenge and really put you on your centre balance point. watching the skiers on this video reminded me of "the performers" my favourite style of mogul skiing☺.
That shredding guitar at the end!! Makes me want to rip some bumps!
Like the great Glen Plake said In the legendary film fist full of moguls. You can buy a groomer turn with carving skis, you can buy a powder turn with fat skis🤪 but you can’t buy a ski that makes you a better mogul skier. If you are not in balance, you can’t ski moguls. One may think they ski in balance, moguls let you know if you are!

Once Upon a Time Mary Jane was only for skis longer than 210cm and the moguls were HUGE and FAST!...very memorable runs had there with some very fast skiers, many on 223cm!!

This is year number 30 for me living here in WP! SEND SNOW! Good to see Freddie in this vid....
Usually, Bump skiers are the best skiers on any mountain!! Especially old school bump skiers..
Drunken Frenchman........my fave. No Pain, No Jane.
You are truly the most underrated youtuber. I’ve watched all your videos and I loved every one.
Wooo! Another ROTT masterpiece, thanks for another excellent hype piece!
My home hill growing up. Love that place!!
Can’t remember how many times I’ve watched this lol love love it so much
I lovevthis series. I LOVE the bumps. I miss they days after a fresh dump a group of us would go out and set lap after lap making zipper lines. We were all on skinny straight skis
I had so much fun skiing with you both! The snow was epic! Let's plan a repeat this season!!!

Mad respect for pushing so fast through moguls! Old ski racers but I wouldnt be able ski even half as fast....and stylish while doing it....no way in hell lol! Super sick!
It was a pleasure to meet you a the Jane marcus
Great video! Gonna put Winter Park on my bucket list, snow quality looks amazing.
Outhouse is relentless!
So much stoke. I suck at moguls, but this makes me want to keep trying to suck less.
Bumps!! Awwwsome episode. I slightly prefer the previous one, but the sheer look from birds eye's view makes this one special. Would be awesome to ski there (that's what I say, not my knees...)!
yes ! real skiers skiing keep inspiring us!
Nice, moguls for life🤣, great vid!

Freddy Mooney?? Legend.
Grande Marcus!!!!!!
Bumps riding technic is so similar to modern racing technic. In racing/carving you do a "virtual" bump when changing the edges. In my dreams i can ride bumps as seen here. :)
Old days, sun valley had good moguls, telluride has the biggest moguls…there are good moguls else where too…
Marcus come to Mad River Glen!
Come to Bumpapalooza
These moguls are intense on a snowboard haha but so fun when you get that right flow
Epic! At our resorts in the Alps you really rarely find moguls, everything is groomed.
Tats is an epic bump skier. To be so smooth and quiet in the Jane's punishing bumps is amazing.
5:45 Those really are the best dreams!! 🤣
So funny my cousins were literally just talking about how they go to Mary Jane for moguls last night at a Christmas party 🎊

Without training moguls when I was young, I would never be the skier I’m today. I believe if you can master a step icy moguls run you will make it down everywhere
Ok, another resort added to my bucket list. Just need to find my self a pair of skinnier skis. Gonna go out to the garage to see if I can find my old pair of K2 Gyrator, or even better, the Dynastar Assault 😍 Thanks!!!

"...get away from me creep..."
An ounce of Mary Jane is worth a pound of Aspen.
That was fun.
Skiing real moguls (not shitty zipperlines) is the most challenging human sporting endeavor there is. There's nothing else that demands more in terms of spontaneity, ingenuity, and full-body fluidity

Marcus was probably on the Bonafides but his ski buddy might have been on the Rustler 9 if I saw the color of the top sheet on his skis. If you’re not a film star super skier like Marcus the Rustler 9 with it’s single Titanal layer that is cutout in the shovel and tail with generous rocker and 92-94 mm waist depending on ski length is a fun ski In bumps, trees and soft snow. My favorite Blizzard for this type of terrain at Alta, UT.

Anything with the strength to power through a mistake, but the quickness to help avoid that mistake in the first place, works great. I've got 4 sets of skis, and all 4 have advantages and disadvantages in the bumps. Your style will be slightly different on any ski, but the reality of moguls is that there is nowhere to hide, so whatever ski you have, you just have to try your best and that's gonna do.
No question. Bump skiers that can do it rip. Nelson Carmichael steamboat 93’

Moguls don't suck. Well, icy moguls kinda suck but, there they are.

@Mtb_5670

Mary Jane is an area in Winter Park Resort. However, the run mary Jane is just a run people take from the main area of wibter park, to mary Jane.
While I have full respect and awe for the athleticism of modern world cup competition mogul skiers, the uniform bumps and homogenized runs have, for me at least, lost the essence of mogul skiing. Mogul skiing should be on the edge, ragged, full of improvisation and spontaneity. It embodies what shredding is all about. This video perfectly captures what pure bump skiing is. Like Marcus in the opening scene, it turns your head and leaves you no choice but to join in.
Some one play fortune son
"mecca" moguls 🤔
Lol moguls
Not even one percent of all skiers can ski moguls And moguls are 60% of every mountain
Shitty skiers make shitty moguls, but good skiers ski shitty moguls with ease.
Sorry, but Killington Vermont is the Mogul capital of the world
