Retrofitting a Custom Retrowave Dash in my Z31
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video, I go over some of the common questions I get asked about my custom digital dash I made for my 300ZX, and show some of how I built it. I may make a follow-up to this video, if there is enough interest!
At the time of publication, I am not offering these for sale.
I am working on determining an outlet in which I may publish some of the information I have, relating to this project. I will update this description once this is available.

CANBUS message sifting is one head fk of a job, well done! Instant sub BTW! Some crazy awesome work!!!
watching videos like this make me wish i was smarter. killer job!
Bro, from a fellow z31 owner, I WANT this!! I tried to do something similar with a raspberryPi but as you stated, it was not fluid at all. Ended scraping that idea years ago. If you ever decide to sell, whether it's just hardware, software or as a kit, count me in on a buy in!
3:40 my man's writing code like a Hollywood hacker. Very cool. And the project is fantastic, well done (from someone who wants to do this to another car). Further, the Devkit you built for the Ford dash is really neat!
Man z31 stuff keeps popping up everywhere, and this is the type of stuff that really makes me miss mine. I had an 84 50th AE with a Kaminari front bumper and the original Spearco intercooler kit. It had less than 50k miles on it when I bought it in 2013.
Dude, that thing is so clean I can't even begin to express the satisfaction I got from watching it be made. I'm begging you, please make a follow-up of the dash being installed into the car.
The custom faceplate is such a nice touch. I just went the complete opposite direction of converting canbus messages to my old analog dash. Now everyone still thinks my bronco is a rusty hunk of junk
This is one of the best things I've seen on KZread in a minute, good job, made it look easy lol
I dream of doing a project like this. Modern cluster in an older car is such a cool project. Well done!
No way! i saw you post about this build on Twitter ages ago and its only just now randomly popped up on my KZread! Super mega duper cool ass build man, you're one very talented individual! I wish i had one tenth on the brain power required to do mods like this!
I'm blown away u just built a board and can program code. Your skills are amazing. Wish had your ability
DESPERATELY need this on my Volvo 240 I’ve seen a couple similar things like this but this is so much more, love it
Would definitely buy this for my z31. And insanely impressive work was put into this.
i need this for my celica!!! OMG
Well done Dude I am in awe.
I need this right now omg, this is absolutely incredible.
Looking forward to seeing more info!
Dude, mad respect to you
awesome work!
This is amazing. I wish i could do this to my 40th anniversary 4runner. It has many 80s easter eggs as a throw back to the 1984 4runner.
Amazing 👏
wooooooooooot 😍 bro this is the most cool thing i ever seen as mod for car.
Duuuude. I've been wanting to do this to my mk5 gti! So dope. Great job man. Some day I'll learn how to do it hopefully!
crazy skills you got there
Bro you're a genius
Ok you got me hooked. I wanna do this for my chevy ambulance
I was saving up to swap my dead Z31 cluster, but this is FREAKING AMAZING, I NEED IT
this was soooo sick to see, i would absolutely buy one for the 1986 im tryna cop
Very well done. ❤

You somewhat could do the same with raspberry pi5, Qt designer and m.2 drive for fast boot?
If definitely buy this for my z31
insane!
Love it. I am also very particular about dash design, so I am stoked to see a well designed dash instead of another iPad slapped on the dash.
Wow....that is SICK! Just randomly came across this video while looking up carputer dashes.....subscribed! I am building a vintage restomod and would LOVE to do something like this in it!
Beautiful! I’ve been doing a good bit of research on making custom digital dashes (I’m planning to retrofit a junky Saab Sonett 3) and this system is almost exactly what I had in mind! Hoping to see some documentation soon!
way cool. ive got analogs in my 87 but this looks pro. huge ups on this project!
Finally, a Synth Car God!
just subbed! in a few years when you put it in the car, im gonna be so excited!
This is so Cyberpunk. Absolutely nova choom!
Very nice.
Came out so good. Some PlastX polish will shine that cover up nice too

What I'd really like to do is make a new cover that doesn't have the holes in it from the old trip odometer pegs. I know the scuffed cover was a point of contention for some folks though, haha!
This is amazing, but I really like the features of the stock digi dash: Two trip odometers with push-pin controls, gallon countdown, etc. Nissan really knocked it out of the park for driver ergonomics and function with the original. This is eye candy and it is nice. :-)
I had a 2+2 88. Automatic. Lots of hate for that. Commented before completing the vid. Wow! Great freaking work!
Dude, this video production is on point and the outcome of your labor is incredible. Would love more details on the cnc process and what you use for overlays. From the viewpoint of the video is looks nearly flawless! Well done.

My CNC mill is nothing too special, just a sainsmart 3018 with a custom enclosure, needs some upgrades to improve it but it does fairly well. I got the text portion of the face screen printed at a local shop, and they did great work with it!
Really incredible work! I’d love to see the gauges working in the car

It's coming! I have been very busy doing a lot of body repairs on the car so it's something worth installing this into!
I would buy one of these from you no matter the cost for my z31 its insanely cool
I… I would throw so much money at ur face to try to get u to make me one… don’t even own a zx don’t even care. Spectacular work, and kicks square in the nostalgia so nicely
I really like your first design concept at 5:20. It captures the original Nissan design and takes it further and better. Let me know when you start selling this kit. I want to install it in my 84 50th Anniversary 300zx. Great work.
You and Fanatik Builds should collaborate. The result would be auto show concept car quality, if not better.
Any update on if and when you’ll be sharing the code, custom board configuration and 3d files? It’d be very cool to be able to make this without redoing all the work you’ve already put in! Awesome stuff
i love this its so cool i would try to make it but idk if a could for my z31
dude you would make a killing off of these
JEEEZ WHAT, do mine lol!!
Very nice, now get a new plastic cover for it
Creativity
Dangit got my hopes up then dashed them all away with how difficult thay was😅
Please publish more info for this, or if you decide to start selling them i will for sure buy one for my chuki
very impressive, great job! I tried to drive a mechanical speedo with a DC motor and arduino like 10 years ago for an LS swapped RX7. Video is on my channel, it sucks though.

Yo, if you end up selling these I would definitely copped one.
I have normal dials in my z31, have always wanted the retro look electric dials. Please make some to sell
would easily pay up to get a custom dash like that for a 280zx
I need one for my Mitsubishi GTO
Can you give me some advice? I want to learn how to do these thing. Things that involve programming, I am studying computer engineering and I want to use my skill in automotive world. Which way can I go
Can you make this for gmc sierra 2001 ?
I don't own a Z, I've been looking into different dash setups and It baffels me that there aren't any good aftermarket dashs that work with even old vehicles. I know my truck would be difficult (it's new enough that it runs on can) but it's not new enough that it got the "good " dash my truck is a 2011 ram but I would LOVE a 2013+ ram dash but they aren't compatible.
Would it be possible to have a digital clock built in, not just in the form to tell the time but to have it as way to gauge the time of day, for instance sun rise, high noon, and sun set. Also would be cool for a day to night transition on the dash.

With more custom hardware it would certainly be possible, sadly in this case with using the OEM cluster as a base it wouldn't be an option
You mentioned getting tips from others online. Do you have any links to some of the resources you used?

Certainly, Canbus with arduino and the like is fairly documented so I don't have any specific sorces for that as I gleaned a lot from a variety of places and my own experimentation. I got a lot of info from this 2GFusions forum where someone had covered swapping these clusters into their cars: www.2gfusions.net/showthread.php?tid=5855 and this facebook group had occasionally shared some good info on the subject as well: facebook.com/groups/1915936068714343/ For flashing the firmware you can use a particular version of ForScan, or UCDS. you would need to buy the appropriate cable for that though, and these typically need to recognize a vehicle from my experience, to allow the upload of the firmware. (Hence why I have a case with an ECM, BCM and gateway module in it to connect with). For the hardware side of integrating it to the 300zx, this is mostly a lot of typical analog voltage readings, which has been covered by many people before me and could probably be explained better than I could. There are many tutorials online that would cover this topic for you. Hope this helps!
Would you be making those analog to canbus conversion boards?

I did make this one, but at this current time I don't have any plans for producing it as a product
bravo good sir, i wish i was smart enough to do this, cause as you said other options are kinda slugish
hi, could you create me a digital instrument panel for my peugeot 206 cc? how much would it cost? or can you tell me who could do it? Thank you.

The iron base I got redone with some cerakote, so far so good!
How do you even make a faceplate like that? Did you use a machine? I see people use these plastic sheets and are able to print stuff on them (the numbers, the black background etc.) what is it and how do you do it? Or rather what is it called so I can just watch a video on it? Lamination or something? Any helps is appreciated tyia

In the case of mine, I cnc milled the main component of it, and had a screenprinting shop print up the numbers and text for me so I could apply them on top. The filler piece was 3D printed, the main part could be too but I wanted some sharp details that would have needed a lot of post processing

@@BlitzenDesignLab thank you so much! What software did you use to design the numbers and also what is the main component material? It’s like diffused plastic? Is that just what they sold it to you on?

I used Qcad for most of my work, and inkscape to color in the face. The area behind the text is hollow, but colored white to reflect light better. The white parts of the print allow the light to pass through for illumination, and it was screen printed on an acrylic sheet. The rest of the base consists of the circuit board with the LEDs, and an ABS plastic frame

@@BlitzenDesignLab did you get any footage on this part of the process? I am super interested in doing something like this and I am a member of a bunch of z31 communities on FB; I think this would help a large group in the community with the dying digital dashes. If there is anything I can do to help make a guide or documentation I would be up for it!
Goes to show it is possible but some with skill set dont deem it worth it with RND
If you make for z32 I’d buy
is this on github anywhere (CAN stuff specifically) sniffing all the messages is the biggest pain to reverse a CAN dash

fairly curious what ADC's you chose for the project too.. this is fascinating
@BlitzenDesignLab

I haven't really got my work published much at the moment I'm afraid, this is just a hobby and I haven't had the time to compile everything. For ADCs I'm using some ATmegas, since I can use them to also do some co-processing and handling of the security stuff as well, treating the main CAN compatible microcontroller as an HID item of sorts. If I were to go through it ground-up again I'd probably change up the architecture though as this has a lot of moving parts so to speak.

@@BlitzenDesignLab I had issues with response rates and resolution when trying to use the ADC's of an ESP32 to translate BMW analog signals to something digital this is a great project I wasn't really looking for source code more curious if you documented the ARBID's and information about them since that is usually the most painful part of doing something like this at any rate thanks for the replies I know how random youtube comments can be :D

btw this is the project I have helped on kzread.info/dash/bejne/emp1spmuldbQh5s.html&ab_channel=sorek i had always thought to expand it further into a complete cluster solution but its harder on the OBD1 cars since its all analog and not signals i can tap from ECU
What's the data detector you're using at 3:28 ??

It's a bit of homebrew hardware, mostly comprising of an Esp32 (for the CAN compatibility) and an older android phone for collecting the data

How did you learn to custom build your own dash? Are you and electrical engineer? Did you go to school for this?

No formal schooling here! I learned electrical basics back in high school but this is all just a hobby for me. Learning to make the cluster work was largely broken into learning components of things; CAN interfacing, reading various sensors, reading digital signals, etc. It's kind of hard to explain my thought process without getting into a lot of detail but big projects like this are only big as a whole. Breaking it down into more manageable sections goes a long way!
Can you make me one? I have an 86 NA 2+2
