RETRO SIM RACING - IndyCar Racing 2 - I haven't played this since 1996!

Ойындар

Today we go back to the game that started it all for me, IndyCar Racing 2.
Sure I played plenty of arcade-style racing games before this one, but this was the first "proper sim" I was ever exposed to as an 11 yearold way back in 1996. Back then I was playing it on a 70MHz Macintosh using a keyboard, but today I have it up and running on my sim PC using a Logitech G920.
Let's see just how far things have come in the last 25 years!
A huge thank-you to "Mike's Track Building and Sim Racing" for their tutorial video on how to get this running under Windows 10:

Definitely not IR2 old since that’s older than me 🤣 but I’ve been racing around since V8 Supercars/TOCA Race Driver 2 came out. Still have discs for V8SC 3, OG Grid and DiRT but they’re all from a time of product keys as a method of DRM so without resorting to dubious methods they’re relics on my shelf

If you ever play this again, don't forget to use your F keys to bring up the black box. Yes, the same one from iracing. There's also hotkeys to change your fuel map, adjust the front and rear ARBs, and change the brake bias. There's a button to change what's on the display too so you don't have two speedometers.

Awesome video, it brings back so many memories. Thanks for doing it. I played this game to death back in the 90’s although I could never have the detail turned up high enough to see the decals on the cars. The first racing game I played was Chequered Flag on the ZX Spectrum although there wasn’t much to it. The first game I played online was NASCAR Racing 4 I think, in fact that was the only one until I signed up for iRacing a couple of months ago.

Really enjoyed that, remembered everything as if it was yesterday. I remember 'pre-season testing' at Laguna Seca and getting three laps within four one-hundredths of a second of each other, and was so proud of it. There's been some memorable racing games I've played, it all started in the arcades when I was a kid playing games like Pole Position 1982, Hard Driving 1989 etc. F1 games I played to death on the Amiga 500 and 1200, Formula One Grand Prix 1992 and Nigel Mansell World Championship 1992. I was playing with a gamepad but man I had fun with that game. I spent countless hours racing at Laguna Seca and Elkhart Lake. I was using the Player's Racing colors as this was my favorite team. I had the demo of this as a young kid, I bought it on floppy disks from a dodgy Sunday market shop in Frankston and I'm pretty sure I thought it was the full version, but it only had Laguna Seca and Michigan tracks available. I got down to a 1 minute 7 second lap around Laguna on a keyboard with no setup adjustment after hundreds of hours, pretty sure that was great! The physics seemed amazing for the time and crashes were epic, the way they split apart! What a game it was 🤣

I love the function, that you can change the skills of the opponents. So you have a chance to win although you have not much practise. And there is a funny bug. When you are on the Laguna Seca Track with Chase Mode (F10) the car disappears for about 2 seconds when you just pass the Corkscrew.

I used to have this on my 1st generation iMac. In hindsight, I would have driven an actual IndyCar with greater competence as a 5-year-old than how I attempted to play this contraption. The graphics were horrible so you couldn’t see the road ahead, the cars had absolutely no traction whatsoever so I couldn’t stop swaying and bumping into everything that existed, and with a keyboard and a mouse, you could forget about it altogether. But as a little kid, I didn’t mind apparently… Speaking of Indy games, I had the Al Unser Jr. Arcade racing installed on my PC too, which had even more ass-backwards controls/graphics, if you can believe it. We’ve come a long way.

My first sim too :) I remember I got the best crashes by parking the car at the start of the back straight at Michigan; AI couldn't avoid. Also if you finish a race and wait for all the cars to pit, you can then kind of drive very slowly straight through the whole line of cars in the pitlane, and they will "crash" in a funny way.

Australia isn't is Europe though ;-) I can also tell you that is got pretty big in Europe once Nigel Mansell switched to it from Formula 1 since from that point onwards nearly every race was televised live in Europe until IIRC after the 2000 season. In 2001 we only got delayed highlight shows because CART got too greedy I guess. The Indy 500 though always had it's own TV deal which meant that it was always available live only on Pay-TV.

Once Sega and Namco joined the party things got much more interesting. The birth of the Timezone arcades in the 80's with the special play anything passes for a couple of hours really opened the door for arcade developers to work on immersive tech in Aus. Would love to see a setup vid on getting wheels to work on these old games. cheers mate ✌
