The terminator captain is a Rogue Trader model (1st edition), not 2nd edition. The librarian force sword is absolutely standard. Every librarian model with force sword has it. Turmiel from dark vengeance has the same one, as does the last plastic librarian, and even Jensus Natorian, the Blood Raven Deathwatch librarian. The horned skull is the symbol of the Librarius, and represents the mutation of the human genome that led to psychic powers. Also, the old beakie marine is on the Rogue Trader cover. You absolutely have to paint him as a Crimson Fist. The consensus is that his load-out is power fist and plasma pistol.

Was going to say the exact same thing about the Terminator Captain, yep 1st ed from 1989. I've recently bought two squads from this era worth of them and am going to paint them up as they where back then just for nostalgia and to play some Space Hulk. Blood Angels and Deathwings.

When you get your hands on the Witch Hunters codex you'll find that that is actually a Power Stake not a walking stick: A long iron stake that immolates as it pierces the body of a psyker. Counts as a power weapon but wounds psykers on a 2+. Not too shabby

And it is once again a thing in the latest codex. Also they "re-did" the Captain in both his Power Armoured version (one of the earliest "Limited Edition if you spend X amount") as well as his Terminator Armoured version (hence he is in the latest codex) as part of their nostalgia drive/old school resculpts. You can probably find him on google but they both have the skull covered scabbards on their power swords much like the originals. ;) EDIT: just checked and the Terminator Captain was the Limited Edition store opening model and the Power Armoured Version was a Web Exclusive for their new store launch in 2014

The Terminator Captain's leaning could be compensated for by cutting him off his slot, and pinning him onto a base that slops upward slightly. Like he's trudging uphill to the edge of a cliff. That way, his pose is leveled out, but not in a way to exposes the unnatural upturn of his feet. It would seem like a natural pose.

The glory days of Inquisition models were around those "Daemonhunter" and "Witchhunter" codex books... great Inquisitors, great henchmen (you could even run Adeptus Arbites in the Witchhunters codex, as counts-as Inquisitional storm-troopers... I painted up two squads of old early-2000s metal Necromunda enforcers as classic Arbites)

When released the gun built into the terminator captain's power fist was a grenade launcher. Last year I undertook a project where I put together 40k armies for the current codexes using only Rogue Trader vintage models. I managed Dark Angels, Imperial Guard, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Tyranids and a Genestealer cult. Also can you describe the Necron Lord you are looking for? I have several of the original version with a tall head, cape blowing to the side and holding a staff of light. All metal, no plastic parts. This predates the green rods. One is just undercoated and will probably never be painted by me. The staff of light arm is not glued on but I do have it.

I love seeing these old minis still in use - GW's had an intriguing history, I feel like whether they were bought new way back then or sourced from ebay now, having a few retro minis in an army shows appreciation of the weird journey 40k's been on. When I decided to get back into the hobby at the beginning of the year the first thing I did was haul my old 40k boxes out from under the stairs to see what'd been dumped in there that could be of use in an Emperor's Children force - I've finished painting up a first edition Space Hulk plastic terminator and an RTB01 marine, and there's a v1 Keeper of Secrets, plastic terminator Librarian, and single-piece metal mk5 Heresy armour marine, and some of those old Genestealers waiting their turn (not that you'd normally find them in a chaos army, but my theory is Slaanesh can seduce *anything*). And props to the sculptors back in the day, they don't look half bad alongside new troops.

Excellent video! Definitely a trip down memory lane. Back in 2e, I had 100 of those Genestealers - no two had the same are positions - they were painted like fireants! (In fact, I had 10,000 points EACH of Marines (BLACK TEMPLARS 🤪), Orks, Genestealer Cult, Tyrranids, Genestealers, 15,000 points of Imperial Guard, 2k Eldar and about 1.5k or so of Chaos (Noiese Marines anyone?)! Lost interest in 3rd ed so traded it away ffor 28mm Essex Greeks and tons of other Historical miniatures since that was my first love and I was pursuing my Masters in History in at the time. Note: Lead in not poisonous on your skin as the molecule can not be absorbed through the skin as it is too large. It is only toxic if you ingest it (so no chewing on or playing with toy soldiers then sucking your fingers); wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and you will be fine. (Been in the hobby since the early/mid 1970's when miniatures had far more lead in them; handled fishing weights, ammo and musket balls with no ill effect!) 🤪🎅😜 Finally, a miniature can be a model, but a model can not always be a miniature! You were handling metal MINIATURES and plastic models. 🎅

Everything is standardised, the rams symbol was and possibly still is the symbol of Psykers back in the day. It also had slightly different symbols depending on the level of the psyker. For example this particular Space Marine Librarian is an Epistolary rank. It turns out that the pattern on the sword goes just as far as it does on the old model! Actually, looking at it now, their swords look almost identical, with the same horned skull on the top of the grip, the only real difference seems to be an aquila pommel on the new model rather than a skull. Edit: You were kind of right about the pattern going halfway up the blade, that's how it is on the currently in production librarian models with swords.

I have a bit of a retro obsession at the moment. With the squats coming back I've rather keen to try and get some oop retro ones so when I start a Leagues of Votaan army, I can have one squad of veterans. I am also eager to get a praetorian IG army. I'm on the look out, again for at least 1 squad of retro Praetorians to make up a veteran squad whilst the main bulk can be the new Wargames Atlantic minis. I have however also be looking through my old models recently because of my new interest in retro. I work in a charity shop and on very rare occasion, we've had retro models come in. Of course I've snatched up anything of interest and also whatever doesn't sell to save it fro, the scrap heap. But looking through it, I've found some nice stuff. An old Commissar Yarrick (like 1990s yarrick) A rogue trader inquisitor in terminator armour Rogue trader librarian in terminator armour A space crusade dreadnought with some other models from the same box Old space marine scouts (possibly rogue trader) Blood angels Captain (possibly 2nd edition) An old metal dreadnought I also got from work 10 metal cadians, 10 metal catachans, and I also already owned 10 metal valhallans and 10 metal steel legion. (No praetorian though 😭) I also managed to get part of the old hero quest box. A plastic wizard, Elf, dwarf, human with some plastic skeletons. All still on the sprues. It's so much fun seeing all these classic mode,s which look crap by todays standards but are full of their own unique charm

The Librarian model you posted is from the 2nd edition release of the newer librarian models. Similar to Warhammer Fantasy at the time, all psykers in 2nd edition were generally available in three or four tiers. Librarians had classes/ranks: Lexicanum, Codicier, Epistolary and Chief Librarian. The model you have is the Epistolary version, or Level 3 of 4. GW used to release numerous "special" models at once. The Librarian launch included three different metal minis, and then a fourth in Terminator armour. I believe a bike Librarian followed after the release of the later plastic bikes, etc.

Oh, and Force Weapons, as well as Witch Blades, etc. were...staggeringly powerful in certain conditions. 2nd edition was miles above modern 40K in terms of craziness. No other edition has come close to matching the lore in the game. It was 50% role-playing game/50% wargame. Easily breakable by gamers, but no version has touched the madness of 2nd edition.

Those OG Genestealers are WAY more fun to paint than the modern ones. I have 2 of them and had a blast getting them ready.

The Captain in the Terminator armor. The weapon on the Power Fist is a grenade launcher. That was a standard load out in Rogue trader

An old trick with metal models and slotta bases is to use plyers or just the corner of your desk to bend the tab into a V or S shape this will jam into the slot in the base and hold without needing anything else like blutak or folded paper. Also that terminator captain weapon on his fist is digital weapons upgrade card I think.

Idk if you'd tried it on those genestealers, but the paint stripper from AK worked really well for me. It managed to get though thick paint and varnish and its become my go to, though I wish the bottles were bigger

I think the IG could totally get updated. Theoretically, making generic multiple arm and torso options for raggedy, ornate, or muscular arm/torso, then making a regular infantry and maybe a heavy weapon kit for each regiment. 2 kits per?

This rogue trader marine from 14:29 looks exactly like the one on the cover of Warhammer 40:000 rouge trader book, that gun etc only mirrored (the one with ork head in hand :D)

I had that 'falling forward' Terminator Captain in my Legion of the Damned space marine army back in 1989/90, even then I thought it was a mis-cast mistake that he was at such a weird angle.

The lean forward is common to a lot of metals, but is more pronounced in the RT-era Termies (Chaos Termies are equally bad). My suspicion is that it has to do with the depth of the molds, and in order to fit the bulky upper backs of the Terminators, the model had to be cast at a slight forward angle, which in turn requires the feet to be angled so that they still slide directly out of the mold.
