Watch the sodium content on those cereals. It's still pretty high, like regular cereal.
The colours of a brighter more care free era, shell suits and bright colours were the thing "back in my day" ;)
I'd love to see Guilliman painted like this. It'd be so odd and yet somehow so fitting

Since Guiliman lore wise is a relic from a different time when the Empire was fundamentally different, that would actually be like a really cool signifier of his age. His armor is like the old 1st and 2nd edition style while everything else is the more grimey and grimdark style.
I loved the bright and bold paint jobs of the 90's - it seemed every battle occurred in a luscious grassy meadow on a beautiful summers day. Wonderful contrast with the grim and gothic artwork found in the codexes and stuff.

Like a battle on a paradise world! Everything looks pretty and sunny, while Ultramarines eviscerate whatever aliens, mutants, heretics or daemons decided to invade. Or, this is what they look like for imperial propaganda and such.
Frankly, being an old man, who started in 2nd ed I do believe that this is how an Ultramarine is supposed to look, the "modern" look is not the will of the emperor, the classic one is. Change is bad, because change comes from Tzeench! Only the 2nd ed style is the true 40k style... etc., etc., etc. Really good-looking mini.
Being someone who didn't start Warhammer until 8th edition. I actually love this retro look more than the colors they have now, I feel like it's the yellow instead of gold on the shoulders that's most interesting.

Same dude, it's really cool.
I started over 20 years ago in this hobby and I love seeing the old school paint schemes on the new models. Reminds me as a kid looking at the white dwarves and admiring the models. Great work!

What do you think about painting newer models in the older style? I honestly think I love it. Bright Light style all the way!

The details in the new models take so well to the old bright color schemes.
it would be really cool to see someone bring a whole army of brand new models painted with the old colour set. it would stand out so strangely against most table setups lol
Personally, I love retrohammer aesthetics, so seeing a retro-style Primaris Lieutenant just made my day. Wonderful work.
This just looks so lovely, i think that an army of models like those would really stand out in a modern table
Inspirationally nostalgic! Very cool concept to use on modern models. I do miss seeing the 2,000 point show case Ultramarine armies like in the old codex. Tactical squads and rhinos with the old color patterns/paints
This is great to see! I just finished a modern space wolf army in 2ed colors. It is so fun to get that nostalgic feel on some new stuff. I even went as far as to banner all my squad leaders and HQ's. Nothing screams "Grim Dark" like garishly painted armor on a golf course!

"Grim Dark" was only part of the tagline for the game. It wasn't meant to describe the ascetic. Look at all the old editions for the books, things happening in universe are certainly "dark" as in mature, some of those stories are seriously not for children, and "grim" as in the hopelessness of the state of things. But the ascetic of the game was always bright and colorful. It really created such a strange dichotomy, bright and colorful ascetically, yet such a grim and dark setting for the future.
When I first got interested in WFB and 40K it was around 2004/05, so all the models were still being painted like this, and the old Space Marine tactical squad boxes had the figures front and centre on the front of the box, looking like this. While the "Grimdark" style looks more sophisticated and cool in its own way, the old colourful style takes me straight back to being a ten-year-old entranced by these awesome, colourful space marines. I think the brighter colour scheme was more attractive to me as a child, while the Grimdark Codex, rulebook and White Dwarf artwork got me going later on. A real nostalgia fest, these videos.
That's actually a bit good! I remember when Citadel paints first came out, they were quite a thing. Up until that point you either used Humbrol enamels or Acrylics out of a tube, and if you were a bit more avant garde, watercolours over a white base. Those old paints may not be up to much these days compared to the vast selection we have now, and the older models are a bit more basic- but at least they were cheap!

Enamels were an absolute pain. I painted my first Space Marines with them at the age of 11, and will never forget the mess I made - brushes destroyed, clothes ruined, figures caked in an impenetrable glossy shell.. good times.

I have GW paints that are still good going on 20 years, all the newer stuff dried up after a couple of years.
I would go with 'Glorious Light' as the term for models painted in this style. Great work with the retro painting.

I’ve heard the counter style to “grim-dark” is called “Noble-bright”
In the joyful brightness of the 41st millennium, there is only heavy metal. Their is only.... goblin green.
Good to know that oldschool painting is considered harder than today’s styles. Makes me feel better about my mid-90s pitiful efforts.
I honestly really like the vibrant colours of the old paints, seeing them on new models is really neat.
I had my first bout into Warhammer back in this timeperiod, and I love the vibrant colors.
That yellow is so gorgeous, especially with the neat edge highlighting!

I just started painting minis again after 27 years. I do enjoy the grim dark. But I’m gonna use this video to pull a classic look on my next mini. Thanks for bringing out my inner nostalgia

Welcome back to the hobby! 😀
Noble Bright was the phrase you were looking for.
The painting style determined by the paints of the 90s taught patience, care and a little bit of experimentation. I was still using a pot of goblin green and mithril silver until recently. Made to last. For gold I would play around with red and silver with a bit of snake bite leather. Didn't always work but it was fun. Interesting comparison of then and now techniques.
It looks great. Takes me back to when you'd see them in the shop window. It was a happier look. Well done.
imagining this squeaky clean guy walking on the battlefield next to streaking-grime crudded, dinged up Brother Grimdarkicus is a pretty funny thought.
I really love these more colorful paint schemes, especially the ones from back in the day. Really cool that you got your hands on some of the old original paints👍
This is honestly my favorite type of painting, realism can look amazing but gimme these bright saturday morning cartoon army men!
I actually like that so much more. Maybe when 10th Drops I'll get in to Space Marines specifically in this style. It just pops so much, has so much pride and character compared to the more modern style.
Legitimately looks way better than the modern style. And I wasn't even around when this was a thing so that's not nostalgia.
Cracking paint job !! Really takes me back. Currently digging out my 2ed marines to get an army together.
Loved it. Brought me back to my younger years.
Love this. Gonna try some of these techniques on a few armies I'm working on. Love how vibrant they look. Thanks for sharing and God bless you, and your little manz.

Haha, thanks so much! Yes, this style is so much fun. Just jeep adding white to those highlights and you're sorted!
I can't believe those 30 year old paint pots weren't full of dry rocks...
I've actually wondered what a modern miniature would look like with a retro paintjob but I wasn't brave enough to try it myslef. Thanks for clearing that up for me. lol. It looks better than I expected to be honest.
As someone who started painting in the 90s originally there's definitely a flare of it still in my style today. I feel the bold and colourful approach of the time was to help accentuate the sculpting of the time, when things weren't quite so, lets say, anatomically proportionate and far more stylised. This was a fun video to watch through, though I'm glad we've moved away from that flock and goblin green basing of yesteryear 👀
Back in the day Mithril Silver (indeed any metallic paint) was recommended to go over a black or dark blue undercoat. This was because Mithril Silver in particular was very thin and did not cover well. It was best used over a basecoat of Bolt Gun Metal then Chainmail with Mithril Silver as 3rd coat followed by a final highlight of white on the hard edges.
Does have a certain aesthetically pleasing charm to it. I'd love to see more videos of modern mini's painted in the retro War Hammer style, would be a great idea for a series of videos!
this is actually so sick, would be cool to see other new models with "old" paint schemes
Ever since Midwinter Minis did old units in modern grimdark, I've wanted to see new units in old fashioned paint styles! Thank you!
It's stunning I actually prefer this style of ultramarine with modern models!
Coming from Painting minis in the early 90's, this was an awesome nostalgia moment for me. I think a true Ultramarines army should be painted like this. you have done such an amazing job. Really brought back the greats from the 90's for me. Surprised you didn't utilize the flesh wash as much , as I found it works really well on almost any colour.
Boltgun Metal and Mithril Silver, what a combo. Sure brings back memories 😆
I just finished some Primaris Blood Angels in a second edition inspired scheme. Cracking good video!
110% nostalgia! Ahhhh! Love it so much. Gimme that over realistic grim dark any day
Retro paint schemes on modern models is a very cool thing. Creates a very bold and in your face look. When done well like this it just looks the business. It's a surefire way to have one of the coolest armies on the table.
Looks beautiful.
White helmets are used by the Ultramarines for veterans, which a lieutenant would be. The yellow trim on the shoulder pads is just for 3rd company though. First company used white trim when they were in power armor, and all the other companies had different trim colors. It was all in the old Index Astartes books
This is awesome! Proper nostalgia! I've been having a go at a BA HH army long the same lines, using yellow instead of gold. I've toned it down a little but for me, it (sort of) makes up for my old 90's BA army I chucked out in a house move.
I want to paint my night lords like this for Horus Heresy, all with goblin green bases!

It'd be a beautiful sight.. even if they're evil night Lords. 😈
I would absolutely love to see a whole army in this scheme. I see a lot of videos of people doing single models, but I don't think I've ever seen a whole range of them.

Yeah, that'd be so good to look at! I might do a combat patrol in the old scheme.. its just finding the time. 😀
This style looks incredible. Super clean and crisp.
Love the brightness of the colours; given that these paints aren’t available anymore I’d love to see a comparison with some modern paints with the closest colour match, maybe from Coat D’Arms. In any case, beautiful work and I hope to see more oldhammer (or oldhammer and new hammer mashups)!

I remember when they started with the darker colours, and the gold trim and thinking, That's not right at all, don't like that! 😁 Nice hit of nostalgia there! Good stuff.
Goblin Green has a pretty cool way of painting old minis, it's hard as hell but it's really fun ngl
Back when I had a very limited selection of paints (i.e, this set), I used to create my own gold by mixing Mithril Silver and Flesh Wash, and it was pretty darned effective...
if i were to ever paint a ultra, it would be done in retro style. beautiful work on this video.
I 100% approve of this!! Thank you for doing this!

Love it! Great concept…ah nostalgia!
this is when paints were amazing! great video. love seeing this. this is how i started. 1995
I never got onto the grimdark band-wagon; bright and vibrant colours all the way!
I absolutly love this! I gonna make an Mordian Iron Guard army in this style but color them either old school dark angels green with a lot of red details!
I would gladly do a whole ultramarine army like this
I am surprised how much I loved the final result. Definitely inspired to try this my self. Thanks for sharing!
I think the bright, vibrant paint scheme looks better than the modern, grimdark style. Pops so well on the table.
It’s so nostalgic seeing these old paints. Looks great on the Primaris. Also, Magic Spoon! Love that cereal.
Simply glorious
This was outstanding! I could hear the 90's soundtrack of my local GW store playing in my head again while watching this video. Oh man! Incredible! Great paintjob and I would love to see some more of the classic colour schemes of 2nd and 3rd edition painted on the new primaris marines to show the comparison of how far they have come!
Wow this is beautiful I actually love this paint scheme a lot more than most modern ultramarines
That looks fantastic!
I'm a huge fan of this conceptually simple, very clean style from the 90's. I respect the modern techniques a lot but to me this is peak wargames miniatures painting.
Just getting back into the hobby with 10th edition, after a couple of decades, having grown up with 2nd & 3rd edition 40K and Fantasy Battle. Loving the channel, excellent content and love these trips down memory lane!

Awesome, hilarious, great stuff! Wouldn't have thought of it. Keep up the good work!
As a total noob to wargaming and miniature painting, it's great to see the variety of styles, colours amd techniques that go together to paint a model. And to see that you can paint however you want to!!
Absolutely lovely.
There's a subset of the fandom who are convinced that something cannot be Grimdark unless its tripped over and landed in a pond, and not a clean pond either. And whilst that is true (to an extent), grime and darker hues can give a model a feeling of belonging in a similarly bleak setting, I can't help but feel that having "fresh" looking troops is much more inline with the universe to a certain degree. Many races (not least of all Space Marines) are known to take exceptional care of their equipment, with entire branches of their force dedicated to maintenance and repair of their gear. Similarly, other forces are so used to taking casulaties that at any given time, it's highly likely that any force they take into battle is going to consist at least partly of fresh troops with new equipment. Hell, every Tyranid army that first invades a world is exclusively made up of brand new nids, fresh from the gene pools. I particularly like a clean colourful aesthetic on the Eldar myself. For a race that lives for a long, long time and is known to obsess over detail, yet is the cause of the birth of one of the chaos gods, it's nice to have a reminder that while they look extremely fancy the surface shines while the inside rots.
Gorgeous!
I like how the model pops off the table
I actually think this style looks better than the grimdark style on the new models. The grimdark style works best for the ultra-greeble'd 2000s models, but the new ones are so clean looking, might as well paint them this way.
This is the best miniature painting I've seen in over twenty years! thanks for making this video!
Damn, very pretty! A whole army like this would look amazing!!
I love the bright colours :) Would love to see more like this!
Lovely colours!
That looks so cool! Great work
Wow. I actually much prefer the 90's style to your newer style and it's made me want to paint a primaris marine in the style of the 90's blood angels scheme. I think it would look awesome. Great job btw 👍
YES!! Man you don't even realize how much I wanted this.....more Retro bright colors on everything!!!! :)
I like it. I've been toying with the idea of doing that vintage base style for my HH armies.
wow this looks so much better
Id be interested to see what some of the races that werent really a thing back in 1992 look like in this style
Absolutely love it! Half tempted to put together an army in this style myself!
I love it , transports me back to being 16 and learning 40k , using books for hills and blenders for other terrain
🥺🥺 the nostalgia just hit me right in the feels, thank you sir! Started 40k in 99/2000. Greatest moments of my life.
I think an entire army done in that style would be brilliant to see
That blue feels more Ultramarines than the current look they rock hehe
I'd love for someone to do a whole home brew chapter army of marines that have their "official" colors be based on this style.
Nailed the look man love the nostalgia hits
I love it! Do a squad with a dreadnaught!
This hit me in the feels
