Painting Warhammer like it's 1994
Ойындар
Painting Warhammer like it's 1994. Looking back at Second Edition Warhammer 40,000 and the retro paint set of the mid 90s. I paint an Ultramarine Space Marine, a Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Warrior and an Eldar Guardian. Using basic painting techniques, this video is ideal for beginners looking to get into the world of Warhammer.

What was your first model? Do you want to see more second edition stuff? I've really enjoyed dipping back into the past, so just let me know. 😀

Mine wasn't straight from GW technically, it was a box of Space Crusade my parents bought me for Christmas as 'my thing' (Dad owned Heroquest and he did all the painting on it etc.) featuring those classic pushfit monopose marines like the one featured here, the old Chaos Dreadnought (which I wish would get an updated kit even if it's just a nostalgia bait one) and so on.

My first model was the old Ulric the Slayer, which I got as a birthday present from my big brother along side his used (but unpainted) 2nd Edition starter box and the Space Wolves codex.

My first models were the Space Crusade minis, I wish I still had all of them. EDIT: Yes please more 2nd ed stuff! There's too much grimdark edgyness when it comes to warhammer, I need more RT/2nd silliness!

Smell is one of the most powerful senses. You may "forget" how something smells, but the moment you smell it again, a torrent of memories and emotions come forward.

Oh my lord, these are great. There is a huge amount of nostalgia in this video. This needs to be 2 hours long. Goblin green and all the other great paint names.

@@Ymgarl The original Goblin Green is renamed Warboss Green, but it's not actually the same. Apparently a 1:1 mix of Waaagh! Flesh and Moot Green get's you pretty darn close to the original Goblin Green.
I think videos like these should make many enthusiasts happy. The painting guys show you grand schemes of light, shadow, and how to make the perfect metal gleam on a back pack after 100 layers of paint - and there we have 90s vintage models in their simplistic yet enjoyable colors. Just shows you don’t have to treat all your models like a Golden Demon entry, and you can be happy with just a basic scheme and an enjoyable paint session.
I'm most impressed that you were able to find a set of 1994 paints that aren't solid rock.
Tune in to watch Olly literally huffing paint! In all seriousness, excellent video. Really appreciated the nostalgia, I remember buying this exact same set back in the mid 90s.
A full army in this style would be incredibly nostalgic. No crazy details or excessive technique, just clean basic colours, and it will look fantastic.
This took me back to painting blood angels terribly as a 10 year old. I'd like to see more 2nd edition stuff, but what I wouldn't mind seeing is a follow up to this video where you take the three models seen in this video and do the same schemes but with modern paints and techniques. Be interesting to see the old models with a modern look.

Definitely more 2nd edition stuff please! These vibrant colours are needed in these dark times
Brings back some memories. I can almost smell those paints! Lol. My favourite army was Bretonnians with the Green Knight, King Louen at el.
I'm still using a bunch of original paints from back then...I think some of the colours are excellent still. Elf Grey, Crimson Gore, Tentacle Pink, still up there with the best!

That sounds like a great collection.. don't tempt me to hunt down more haha.
I’ve not painted them since I was a kid in this era… lovely bit of nostalgia cheers!
the goblin green base! soooo many memories unleashed in my heart
Absolutely fantastic I didn't grow up playing Warhammer but these are still so nostalgic looking they just scream late 90s table top I also love the video on retro Warhammer terrain you did everything's just so bright and beautiful
I didn't get into the hobby until 1998 when the 3rd edition of 40k arrived, though before that we had played plenty of Hero Quest of course. It's nice to see these old paint styles, this is exactly what my group of friends also saw in that golden time over 23 years ago.
I haven't even watched it yet and i'm already deliriously happy...
I love the Iyanden scheme. To me, it just screams "classic Eldar."

I still think of the hexagonal pots as 'new', as I grew up in the older round ones lol
Sense of smell is the most closely linked to memory - especially emotional memory. I strongly remember the orange scented model glue from when I was younger!
I would love to see more retro warhammer video ! I'm becoming obsessed with it also and I just bought a chaos metal dreadnought minutes ago ! great stuff !

Ah amazing. I have to say, I didn't appreciate it at the time (or even 10 years ago) but I've suddenly started to love it.
The moment of silence after cracking it open....man takes me back to when I was 8....great video.
now thats the warhammer i remember as a kid, the smell of those paints, teh goofy models, the full metal models as well (i had the metal terminators but they got nicked) nostalgia of the highest degree
Just the names of the old citadel colors really brings me back. I still remember seeing 40k models for the first time at a hobby store and instantly fell in love. I didn't even believe that models on the box could even be hand painted. It's been such a journey since then. I love this video, it made me remember my whole hobby adventure.
This is very much my jam. And I’ve also been stalking a bunch of 90s Eldar seers. My eye did twitch a little though at the scorpion rune going onto the guardian.
I still have Snakebite Leather, Space Wolves Grey and Bad Moon Yellow in those pots. Amazing how GW had flip caps that worked back in the day.
OMG, I had that kit when I was 12. I got the 40K 2nd ed box, the identical plastic tactical marine box, and that paint set as my first ever Warhammer purchases.
Nostalgia!!! its crazy to look back and see how far painting has come along.
We bought a housepaint recently for our bedroom and it smelled BANG ON like goblin green. I was 12 again, it was excellent.
Wow this takes me back. I had an Eldar army. That Codex brings back a lot of memories
Very nostalgic, especially when I saw the paint issues - really took me back!
I loved the genuine smile on your face when you smelled the paint and it took you all the way back!

Those paint pots! I can remember going to school on Monday with really sore hands after painting all weekend. But they kept your paints from drying out, unlike today. I really didn't like that Space Marine sculpt. Even in 1995, I thought they could do better! It was so hard to make look good and I longed for the metal ones. I will say this, Warhammer today is something we could only have dreamed of and it was worth the wait.
Please do continue your 2nd edition roll! I can't quite put my finger on it, but you have a certain touch about these things that I think really captures the spirit of the era. On that note, thank you for making these videos. Warhammer didn't really have a significant presence in the small American flyover state I live in until around 40k 3rd ed, and we obviously didn't have the same level of sophistication the UK hobby scene had, so it really is a treat to be able witness all the stuff I missed, however vicariously it might be.
Please do more 2nd edition! I love oldschool painting videos. They make me want to get all my old metal minis painted up and used in a game!
A huge nostalgia rush, these videos. When I got into the world of 40K back in 2004, it was all still like this. The bright colours were entrancing, and I loved the way the 3rd edition packaging of the figures in their squad boxes back then. The grimdark effect that's been around since post-2010 is cool, but this style is indelibly associated with when I got started, with a Space Marines tactical squad from the local toy shop.
I remember getting this set as a kid. It was already very old at that point, but I found it in the rulebook and asked my mum to get it. They found one rolling around in the back.
Watching this guy huff those paints was enough to take me back to 1999.
The face you pulled when first opening that pot brings back so much nostalgia for me. Thank you
This was my first paint set and models, I think I was 12 when I got them for Christmas. this video brought back so many memories, thank you :)
"Sweet playdough" well that description just gave me a huge old cool miniature painting flashback, thanks for that!

100%. I'm so excited about it too.
They turned out great, especially the eldar! Would love to see even more like that!
You talk about the smell of these old paints and I could vaguely remember it. It brought back memories of a ten year old me sitting at the dining room table slapping snakebite leather on rows of skaven warriors without a care in the world except for how well they would do against my friends' wood elves and empire. My, how time flies.
Thank you for taking me back to my childhood back in 1991 with me and my mate playing 2nd edition and before that with hero quest and the original space hulk game.
Your videos are always so wholesome 😊 Thank you for taking me back in time! Enjoy your day!
"While I was instantly drawn to the Eldar!" my condolences. And also congratulations on having two understanding and kind hearted brothers.
I love the idea of taking old and new miniatures and painting them in the old color scheme styles, even if the paints themselves are newer. I love the dynamic and bold colors that they used to use. Even some of the cartoony styles of old.
That 2nd edition eldar codex is looking in a lot better condition than mine
God this takes me back, except back in the 90s my brother and I weren't using citadel paints. We'd been into Airfix kits since forever and had a huge selection of humbrol and revel and random japanese enamels and did almost everything in those. None of the coverage issues. Got a lot of admiration until we let on our secret. Our other trick was using epoxy to glue metal models together instead of superglue
Oldhammer miniatures have a very special magic in their simplicity.
I still have the first monopose Space Marine squad I painted back in 1993/94. They have been repainted since, but they are dear to me. (I stopped playing/painting 15 years back) My 3rd Edition DIY chapter used Blood red, Fiery Orange and the dark brown one that wasnt Snakebite leather (comparison search show me the "old paints" from 2010) I also used flesh Wash over the models as a final weathering/varnish step.
Great job dude! This was like watching the process for how GW painters did it for the box art. :)
Oh how I remember having to go over with white again to tidy up over painting. I soon learnt to be tidy with my dark colours!
The cactus with red cocktail sticks...icing on the cake.
Look at those beautiful bright colours!! My first model was a metal skeleton that I picked up from a games store near my school when I was about 14 (about 1984). It didn’t have a separate base and I painted it with Airfix oil based paint. Thanks for the memories! 🎉
The sweet play doh is suchva great description. As soon as you said it, i could remembervexactly the smell.
I remember a table full of eldar back in the day! Great vids Oly.
Woah, never had a chance to get into the hobby at that time but I used to drool on those! Just the visuals gave me a massive trip to memory lane, thanks for this video!

I think you're probably right. It's a different time, for sure. Warhammer has never been bigger than it is now!
3rd edition Eldar was my introduction to Warhammer. Seeing the beauty of these models makes me want to paint my current models in a more 90's nostalgia. Something that will pop on the field and just bring out the joy of what can be a bit of an over serious game. Thank you so much for the video!
Awesome video! Brought me right back to first and second edition 40K! It’s crazy how you managed to snag this paint set (and minis). Honestly, slapping on paint and having fun playing minis should make a comeback. There are too many videos that drive everyone to paint every mini like it’s for a golden daemon. There’s beauty in fully painted armies on the tabletop.
The smell of these paints takes me back to sitting at a little table in my grandparent's garden, painting Blood Bowl orcs.
Those chaos warriors 😍😍😍 had a lot of fun painting some old school chaos last year! The warriors are so simple to paint. My first ever mini I painted as a child
It's mad I recently helped my Dad clean out his attic and came across some of those old paint pots way past use but it was enough to make me think how cool it was for my Dad getting me into the hobby when I was a little nipper alright fell off in my early 20s and went down the wrong path a little but I thank getting back into hobby to help me get things back together. The Power of Plastic!!

If any of them are still semi moist the can still be used. A small paint shaker and a rust-proof mixer ball and a little distilled water added will bring them back. They are pretty valuable.
That was such fun, the nostalgia and bright colours really added something to my day
i didn't get into 40k until i was like 20. right about when 5th edition was hitting the store. I always feel like I missed out when I see how the hobby used to look. the models are objectively way better now, but I wish I had the experience of caking thick vibrant paints onto low detail figures and then setting up these wacky looking battles with my siblings and friends. back when the lore was being roughly pieced together, and when the only place you could find 40k anything 40k was the shop. anyone who grew up with that, I hope you appreciate it
I was ~1 years old in 1994. It's cozy to realise people were painting like this back then. I also enjoy the game board creation videos
Awesome video! Loved watching this!
Man this takes me right back to 1996 when i first saw the Eldar Falcon and from then on i was hooked. Loved my eldar force, makes me want to collect them again
Come for the miniatures, stay for the literal paint huffing. 10/10 video 😂
Excellent video! I also recently acquired a 2nd edition Eldar army and I would love to see more videos of you painting up yours. Please keep the 2nd edition stuff coming. Cheers!
GW produced ink washes (the Expert Paint Set) back in 1988 as a parallel to their first paint set. They did have the problem of being shellacs and thus reactivating
Superb! I still have paints from that time that I still use to this day. What a great video, your face when you smelt the paints again... that's me every time I use them :)
I still have some unpainted Space Marines and Orks from my 2nd edition box that I got back in the 90s. This has inspired me to paint them, cheers!
I had that paintset, that Marine and a horde od those chaos warriors. Damn. That was epic times.
This was great! Thanks for sharing this.
The nostalgia just hit me right me in the feels ❤️ brilliant video
They look amazing, really enjoy seeing the old models done - even if it’s just for seeing it in a decent camera resolution! Don’t forget to be awesome 👍
This was the era I played 40K, the pre-internet days. I had no idea you were supposed to thin the paints, I just put it on neat 😅 It’s amazing they didn’t look even worse than they did!
Getting nostalgic from watching mg this. I remember painting with my friends while looking at the promotional material from the store with the terrain looking like cactie with long red spikes. And reading all the different codexes. Good times!
If I remember things I’ve heard right, coat de arms has that or close to original citadel paint palette, whereas Vallejo game color would be the stuff from around early to mid 2000s. So really as much as it wouldn’t be a full walk down nostalgia lane for you, you can buy pots of coat de arms if they’re still around and get the similar paint saturation for minis.
I have a box of GW Warhammer "Gobins" that I bought back about 1994. Still in the box, still unpainted...!
I’ve forgotten how much citadel paint has improved down the years. I can remember trying to get a bright white on the High Elves from the 1st Warhammer box set
I have 3 squads of those Eldar Guardians armed with lazguns. Thanks for the time trip
This brought back some memories... I think I still got some original necron metal minis in my loft...
man this was nostalgic. I have some of those paints and they are nearly 30 years old, and still going strong. And yes, I to sad there with my mates and painted like the nerds we where. And gosh do I miss playing with those goblin green bases :D Thanks for the great vid.
Thanks for this. Really brought me back.
This is great, omg it takes me back seeing those colors and style 😁
So good man! Gives me memories of painting mine as a kid
Fantastic stuff. I have an army of RT Eldar in blisters I'm saving to paint as Yriel's Eldritch Raiders with the classic yellow and black bolts style. Love the older Guardians, aspect warriors and harlequins.
The minis are great. But that base is perfect. Loved the video.
The chaos figur was brought like this to heroquest and i loved it
Oh my that censored brush dip was great! Awesome work! Maybe some day I'll actually paint this 2E box set I have collecting dust. I would love to see more 2E stuff, I miss the fanciful character that 40k had back then. Not a huge fan of the hyper-realism of the modern day.
Loved seeing this, I also had that box in the 90s! I think back then I would have dry brushed the axe with the mythril silver. It was bright, but a light dry brush on the edges would make wonders.
